Elara Pov
My dream was beautiful. I was walking up the stage to receive the trophy as the winner of the Intercontinental Fashion Designer Competition. I was wearing a long and shiny red evening gown that reached my feet, with a long slit on the left thigh exposing my fair and smooth skin.
I was very happy because, finally, what I had long been hoping for had come true. To bring home the trophy and honor for my country and, of course, to make my name and designs known in the world of design. In my dream, many people were looking at me, and they were all smiling. They were all happy with the honor I achieved.
Many flashing cameras from photographers and media from different countries are taking pictures of me. I am no longer afraid of many people. I can now face them with a smile and my head held high.
But when I was about to accept the trophy, I suddenly woke up from that beautiful dream of mine. And the culprit for why I suddenly woke up without even touching my trophy was the loud knock from outside my room.
Feeling too lazy to get out of bed, I took the bathrobe from the side of the bed and put it on before walking to the door to open it for whoever disturbed and ruined my dream of achieving it, even if only in a dream.
"What's wrong, Mercy?" I asked the maid with a frown as I opened the door for her. I couldn't help but yawn in front of her because I was still sleepy. I planned to go back to sleep, hoping to continue my dream.
"I'm sorry if I disturbed your sleep, Elara. Sir Alexander instructed me to wake you up and join him for breakfast," Mercy replied, which made me furrow my brows.
Me? He wants me to join him for breakfast? Did a miracle happen last night and Alexander caught it, so he wants me to eat with him now? Besides, he doesn't usually have breakfast in the morning and is always gone and off to the company by the time I wake up.
Even I only eat breakfast occasionally. I usually have hot milk and bread in the morning, but when it comes to lunch, I make up for it and eat a lot. However, at night, I intentionally eat only a little so that I don't gain weight quickly. It's hard to lose weight.
"What good wind did your boss inhale that he wants me to join him for breakfast today?"
Mercy gave me an uncertain smile. "Just take a bath and get dressed, Elara. Then go down to the dining room right away, okay?" Before I could answer her, she immediately left and ran away from me.
With a heavy heart, I closed the door and walked to the bathroom to take a shower. I just took a quick shower because Alexander might get grumpy again if he has to wait for me too long.
After showering, I immediately left my room. When I arrived at the dining room, my question was answered as to why Alexander wanted to have breakfast with me. It was because my mother-in-law was at home.
"Good morning, sweetheart. Did you sleep well?" Alexander asked me with a smile when he saw me enter the dining area. He stood up and, like a gentleman, pulled out a chair for me next to him.
"I always sleep well," I replied to him with a fake smile and secretly raised an eyebrow because of what he did. When I glanced at Alexander's mother, her smile was ear-to-ear. It was obvious that she was very happy to see that her son and I were getting along. I felt a bit guilty because I was deceiving her. I was giving her false hope about something impossible to happen.
"Good morning, Mom. Why did you visit?" I asked her with a smile. My smile faltered a bit when I remembered that I hadn't kissed her on the cheek or taken her hand as a greeting. I didn't really consider her my true mother-in-law.
"I visited because I miss you," she replied to me with a smile. It seemed she didn't mind that I didn't kiss her on the cheek or take her hand because the happy smile never left her lips.
"Here. Eat this, sweetheart," Alexander spoke to me in a sweet voice. He took a spoonful of fried rice overflowing and topped it with bacon and egg before lifting it to feed me.
I looked at Alexander's face in surprise. His mother couldn't see my expression, so I shot him a sharp and threatening look, but he didn't back down. It seemed like he wanted to get back at me for what I did to him when he got drunk. The nerve! He's the one seeking revenge even though he was the one who took advantage of me because he kissed me.
My mother-in-law was watching us and waiting for me to accept the rice her son was feeding me, so I had no choice but to open my mouth and try to fit the large spoonful of food into my mouth.
I wanted to kill Alexander when I saw his expression when he saw me almost choking on my food. He was smiling widely. But his smile quickly disappeared when I firmly stepped on one of his feet under the table. I knew he was hurt by what I did because he suddenly clenched his jaw to suppress the pain. He probably thought he was the only one who knew how to play games.
"You two are so sweet. I really didn't make a mistake in marrying you to each other," Mrs. Reed happily commented while looking at Alexander and me being sweet to each other, even though our feet were fighting under the table. "By the way, the reason I came here is not just to visit you but to give you the ginseng tea I ordered from a distant province. It will help you quickly have a child."
Alexander and I both looked at the ginseng tea that his mother placed on the table. Even our feet wrestling under the table stopped.
"Mom, you don't need to buy things like that just for us to have a child right away. We're both young and healthy. I'm sure we'll be able to give you a grandchild soon, especially since your son-in-law doesn't tire easily," Alexander tried to convince his mother. His excuse would have been fine, but he added something undesirable. Annoyed, I stepped hard on his foot again. His toenails are pitiful now. But it's his fault. So let him suffer.
"I'm just making sure, Alex. You know how much I want to have a grandchild. A grandchild who will inherit what we've worked hard for," his mother replied, then looked at me. "You won't disappoint me, Elara, right?"
"Y-Yes, Mom," I reluctantly answered her. I felt pity for her. I could feel that she really wanted to have a grandchild. Maybe she was getting bored with life because her only child was busy and had their own life, so she wanted a grandchild who would not only be an heir but also a source of happiness for her. Because of this, a decision formed in my mind.
