The first thing I noticed was the hum.
Not a sound exactly—more like a low, metallic vibration in my veins. The second thing was the pain, dull and heavy like someone had poured concrete into my bones.
I tried to move, but even the smallest shift felt impossible.
My eyelids fluttered open. Canvas above me. The soft flicker of lantern light. Earth beneath me. I was in a tent. Alone.
My mouth was dry. My pulse sluggish. I blinked a few more times, trying to focus as the edges of the world sharpened around me.
My right arm was tethered by a thin tube—an IV.
My stomach twisted.
Wolfsbane.
That bitter metallic hum—it was the wolfsbane in my blood, silencing Stella like a gag in her mouth. I couldn’t feel her. Couldn’t hear her. And even worse—I couldn’t reach anyone.
