Chapter 4
The Palace of Secrets
"Because you're not who you think you are."
The words followed me long after the vehicle doors closed.
No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't stop hearing them.
Not who I think I am.
What was that even supposed to mean?
The forest rushed past outside the tinted windows.
Moonlight filtered through towering trees.
Inside the vehicle, silence reigned.
The Lycan King's warriors sat like statues.
Alert.
Disciplined.
Dangerous.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody looked at me.
Yet I could feel their attention.
Every one of them knew something.
Something I didn't.
I folded my arms tightly across my chest.
The rejection bond still ached.
A dull pain lingered deep inside me.
Not as intense as before.
But present.
Like a wound that hadn't fully closed.
My wolf remained unusually quiet.
Almost thoughtful.
Which frightened me more than panic ever could.
Normally she would be screaming questions.
Demanding answers.
Instead she seemed to be listening.
Waiting.
For what, I didn't know.
Across from me sat Kael.
The Lycan King.
His silver eyes remained fixed on the darkness beyond the window.
The moonlight occasionally illuminated his sharp features.
Strong jaw.
Broad shoulders.
The kind of presence that made entire rooms fall silent.
Even now, after everything that had happened, I struggled to understand him.
One moment he looked cold enough to freeze an ocean.
The next he was protecting me.
Defending me.
Claiming me before an entire ballroom.
The memory made my stomach tighten.
Belongs to me.
The words still echoed through my head.
I shouldn't have cared.
Yet I did.
More than I wanted to admit.
Perhaps because nobody had ever chosen me before.
Not really.
Especially not Damon.
Thinking about him hurt.
But strangely...
It no longer shattered me.
The pain was changing.
Transforming into something else.
Something harder.
Stronger.
The vehicle finally slowed.
A moment later it stopped completely.
One of the warriors opened the door.
Cool night air rushed inside.
I stepped out.
And forgot how to breathe.
A massive palace stretched toward the stars.
Silver towers pierced the night sky.
Moonlight reflected from white stone walls.
Countless windows glowed with golden light.
Ancient banners fluttered above enormous gates.
The entire structure radiated power.
History.
Authority.
This wasn't simply a palace.
It was the heart of an empire.
My eyes widened.
"You live here?"
The question escaped before I could stop it.
Several warriors looked amused.
Kael merely raised an eyebrow.
"No."
I blinked.
"What?"
A faint smirk touched his lips.
"This is where I work."
For a moment I simply stared.
Then, despite everything, a laugh escaped me.
The first genuine laugh I'd had all night.
Something warm flashed through his eyes.
Gone almost immediately.
But I saw it.
And somehow that made my heart beat faster.
I immediately hated that.
The massive gates opened.
Guards lined both sides of the entrance.
The moment Kael approached, they knelt.
Not bowed.
Knelt.
Every single one.
The power he carried wasn't simply respected.
It was absolute.
As we entered the palace grounds, another strange sensation washed over me.
Warmth.
Recognition.
Belonging.
I stopped walking.
A pulse of silver light flickered beneath my skin.
The sensation vanished as quickly as it appeared.
But not before several guards noticed.
One of them gasped.
Another immediately lowered his gaze.
A third actually looked emotional.
I frowned.
What was wrong with everyone?
Kael noticed too.
His expression hardened.
"Keep moving."
His voice wasn't harsh.
But it carried unmistakable authority.
I followed him through the enormous doors.
The sight waiting inside stole my breath.
Marble floors stretched endlessly beneath crystal chandeliers.
Silver pillars lined the grand hall.
Ancient paintings covered the walls.
Some depicted wars.
Others showed kings and queens.
And strangely...
Several looked familiar.
A feeling of déjà vu swept through me.
As though I had seen them before.
Which was impossible.
Servants lined both sides of the hallway.
The moment they saw Kael, they bowed.
The moment they saw me...
Everything changed.
One elderly woman dropped the tray she was carrying.
It shattered against the floor.
A young servant covered her mouth.
Another looked as though she might cry.
Whispers spread through the hall.
I caught fragments.
"It can't be..."
"After all these years..."
"She's here..."
A chill ran down my spine.
My gaze snapped toward Kael.
"What is happening?"
His jaw tightened.
No answer.
Of course.
More secrets.
Frustration surged inside me.
I was tired of secrets.
Tired of half-truths.
Tired of everyone knowing more about my life than I did.
By the time we reached a private chamber, my patience had completely disappeared.
The doors closed behind us.
I turned toward him immediately.
"No more."
Kael looked up.
"No more what?"
"No more riddles."
My voice echoed through the room.
"No more cryptic comments."
I took a step closer.
"No more treating me like I'm too fragile to handle the truth."
His silver eyes narrowed slightly.
I wasn't finished.
"Everyone keeps staring at me."
I pointed toward the door.
"They whisper."
"They bow."
"They look terrified."
My voice cracked.
"And apparently the entire supernatural world knows something about me that I don't."
Silence.
Heavy silence.
Then I asked the question that had haunted me since the ballroom.
"Who am I?"
For the first time since meeting him...
The Lycan King didn't have an immediate answer.
The silence stretched between us.
For several seconds, Kael simply stared at me.
Not speaking.
Not looking away.
Studying me.
As though he was trying to decide how much truth I could handle.
I was tired of being studied.
Tired of being protected from answers.
"TELL ME."
The words exploded from me before I could stop them.
Even I was surprised by the force behind them.
Kael's eyebrows lifted slightly.
"You think I don't deserve the truth?"
I continued.
"My entire life has been turned upside down in a single night."
I took another step closer.
"Damon rejected me."
My voice trembled.
"I discovered he was never my true mate."
Another step.
"Silver energy is apparently exploding out of my body."
Another.
"And every person I meet acts like they're looking at a ghost."
My chest rose and fell rapidly.
"I deserve answers."
For a long moment, Kael said nothing.
Then something unexpected happened.
He smiled.
Not his usual cold smile.
A genuine one.
Small.
Brief.
But real.
"You're stronger than I expected."
The compliment caught me off guard.
Before I could respond, a sharp knock sounded at the door.
A warrior entered immediately.
"Your Majesty."
The smile vanished from Kael's face.
"What is it?"
The warrior lowered his head.
"The Northern Council has begun mobilizing."
My stomach tightened.
Kael's expression darkened.
"How many?"
"Three Alpha territories have already responded."
The room became very still.
The warrior swallowed.
"They believe the awakening is genuine."
Awakening.
Again.
Everyone kept using words I didn't understand.
The warrior hesitated.
"There is one more thing."
Kael's eyes narrowed.
"Speak."
"The Blackwood Pack has sent messengers."
My heart skipped.
Damon.
"What do they want?"
The warrior's expression turned strange.
"Alpha Damon Blackwood is demanding an audience."
Silence.
Then Kael laughed.
A low, dangerous laugh.
The kind that made even the warrior nervous.
"Interesting."
The warrior shifted uncomfortably.
"He insists it concerns Ava Ashbourne."
Something twisted inside my chest.
Kael's expression became unreadable.
"Send him away."
The answer came instantly.
The warrior blinked.
"Your Majesty?"
"I said send him away."
The warrior immediately bowed and left.
The moment the door closed, my thoughts returned to Damon.
Why was he asking for me?
Why now?
He had rejected me.
Publicly.
Humiliated me.
Destroyed me.
Yet somehow the idea of him trying to reach me still hurt.
Kael noticed.
Of course he noticed.
His eyes missed nothing.
"He's regretting it."
The statement caught me by surprise.
"What?"
Kael crossed his arms.
"The rejection."
I looked away.
"No."
A faint smile touched his lips.
"Yes."
The confidence in his voice irritated me.
"You don't know that."
"I do."
I frowned.
"How?"
Kael's smile widened.
"Because if he wasn't regretting it..."
His silver eyes locked onto mine.
"...he wouldn't be chasing after what he threw away."
The words struck harder than I expected.
Because part of me knew he was right.
And that terrified me.
Not because I wanted Damon back.
But because I finally understood something.
The moment Damon lost me...
He started seeing my value.
The realization felt bitter.
Too little.
Too late.
A strange sensation suddenly rippled through my body.
I froze.
My wolf stirred.
Not in fear.
Not in pain.
Recognition.
The feeling intensified.
Heat spread through my chest.
Then down my arms.
Across my fingertips.
"What—"
I never finished the sentence.
Silver light burst beneath my skin.
The room exploded into brightness.
I gasped.
The force knocked me backward.
Kael moved instantly.
His hand wrapped around my wrist before I hit the floor.
The moment he touched me, the silver energy surged.
Stronger.
Brighter.
Wild.
The windows rattled.
The chandelier above us trembled violently.
A crack shot across the marble floor.
Then another.
And another.
The entire room shook.
"Your Majesty!"
The doors burst open.
Half a dozen warriors rushed inside.
They stopped dead.
Their faces drained of color.
Silver light surrounded me.
It danced around my body like living fire.
Ancient.
Beautiful.
Terrifying.
I stared down at my hands.
The energy wasn't hurting me.
It felt...
Familiar.
As though it had always been there.
Waiting.
Sleeping.
The realization terrified me.
"What is happening to me?"
No one answered.
Because everyone was staring.
Especially Kael.
And for the first time since I had met him...
The Lycan King looked shaken.
Not afraid.
Not yet.
But close.
The palace alarms suddenly erupted.
A deafening sound echoed through the halls.
One alarm.
Then another.
Then another.
The warriors exchanged alarmed looks.
"What does that mean?" I demanded.
Still no answer.
The silver energy intensified.
The walls trembled.
Paintings crashed from their hooks.
The air itself seemed to hum.
Then my wolf surged forward.
Not wounded.
Not broken.
Awake.
Completely awake.
A voice echoed inside my mind.
Female.
Ancient.
Powerful.
The sound froze every drop of blood in my body.
It wasn't my wolf.
It wasn't Kael.
It wasn't anyone in the room.
The voice felt older than the palace itself.
Older than the packs.
Older than history.
And somehow...
It sounded familiar.
As though I had known it once.
Long ago.
The voice whispered a single sentence.
A sentence that shattered everything.
"The Last Lunar Queen has awakened."
The room went completely still.
Every warrior dropped to one knee.
Every single one.
My breath caught.
The silver light exploded outward.
A shockwave tore through the chamber.
The windows shattered.
The doors slammed open.
The warriors lowered their heads even further.
No one spoke.
No one moved.
I slowly turned toward Kael.
The Lycan King's face had gone completely pale.
Shock filled his silver eyes.
Shock.
And something else.
Something I never thought I'd see on the face of the most powerful ruler in the supernatural world.
Fear.
For the first time since meeting him...
The Lycan King looked afraid...
