Washing the dishes from Sunday brunch, Erin snuck a look at her mom, who was sitting at the kitchen table pretending to read the paper. Despite her mom’s assertion that radiation wouldn’t be so bad, the last week had been hell. Peg’s skin had become so raw around her armpit that it hurt just to wear clothes. A salve had helped, but moving her right arm caused her to wince in pain. More troubling was the fatigue. Over the last few days, just getting dressed and going downstairs seemed to leave Peg exhausted. Sean assured Erin that it was not an unusual side effect of combined chemo and radiation therapies and said hopefully their mom’s stamina would slowly return once radiation was over, but Erin wasn’t so sure.
It was hard seeing her mom like this. Erin longed for her old mom, the one
