31 Erin studied the sixteen people sitting in the jury box. Of the sixteen, twelve would become the jurors who would ultimately decide Ann’s fate. The other four were alternates, selected in the event that they lost jurors during the trial due to illness or unforeseen circumstances. The dilemma was that she wouldn’t know who the alternates were until right before the jury retired to deliberate, when the court clerk randomly selected the jurors who would become the alternates. The alternates could be the four Erin liked the most, or it could be the four she liked the least. Which made it tricky when deciding who, if anyone, to challenge.
