They stood looking at one another, neither one wanting to speak and break the peaceful, electrifying silence. Fang was the one to step in, nudging in between them. Then, in a less cute motion, she nudged them away from each other. She gently grabbed hold of Cora’s clothes and started to pull her toward two empty bowls on the ground.
“Oh! You want food and water. I’m sorry, girl,” Cora apologized as she bent down to pet Fang on the head.
“Let me,” Pierceton quickly said, and then in a flash the bowls were filled.
“Thank you,” she said with a smile.
She would have thought that accepting the bond would have created something between them. It did, but she felt more awkward now. Almost as though accepting the bond changed something between them. But she couldn’t put her finger on it. She wanted to go back to the ease of their relationship before they came to realize her age and that the bond had taken effect.
“Is something the matter?” Pierceton’s questioned. His words broke her away from her thoughts.
“It’s nothing...” she muttered without turning to face him.
“It’s not nothing,” he responded. She could feel that he had taken a few steps closer to her.
“It’s...” she paused. She wasn’t sure how to explain it. She wasn’t even completely sure why she was feeling this way.
“You can tell me anything,” he coaxed her.
“It’s like something has changed by simply accepting the bond. I feel more awkward...” she responded, her back still to him.
“It’s because something did change. There is something more between us now. Before, the bond was weak, like a ripple in the river, but now it’s a wave that is crashing around us, making us much more aware of the other. It’ll take some time to get used to. Then you’ll feel as though the relationship we had before this is but a whisper that cannot hold a candle to what we will have.” He seemed so confident in his words that it gave her at least some sense of ease.
She stood there, speechless for a few moments. His words were beautiful, yet she felt at a loss for how to respond. “What should we do now?” she asked, finally.
“First, turning around would be a good start,” he chuckled.
Slowly, she turned to look at him. That simple act made it almost impossible for her to remain where she was. It felt as though there was a rope which pulled her toward him. “Now what?” she whispered, finding it hard to breathe.
“Now, we move at your pace,” he answered with ease.
She felt her heart tighten. She wanted to be near him. No, she needed to be near him, but did he feel the same strength of the pull as she did? If so, he did not show it. She paused for some time, deciding she wanted to change the topic. She needed to focus on something else, anything else. “My family...” she muttered.
He smiled at her sudden change. “Yes, the fairy queen is looking into it for us. Last she informed me was that she would be able to give me an update within the week, then we can decide what to do next. Now that you are of age, we are able to move up our plans,” he informed me.
“Then I guess we’ll wait...” She had hoped that there would have been more to discuss to fill the void between them. Yet, here she was still without much more to say.
“Are you nervous?” he asked as he stepped closer to her.
“Not nervous, persay...” her voice trailed off.
“Then what would you say?” he pressed.
“I feel like... the air is thick, and I want to be able to make it less thick, but I’m having a hard time focusing...”
“I do agree. It is hard to focus,” he agreed as he stepped forward. Now they stood only inches from each other once more. It felt as though electricity sparked between them.
Her thoughts clouded, and before she knew it, she had also taken a step towards him. Gently, she took his hand and one more step. Now they were so close that all she had to do was look up and lean, then their lips would touch. So close...His scent was intoxicating. It was hard to think straight with him so close.
Thoughts escaped her. Only impulsive actions consumed her. She lifted herself onto her toes and pressed her lips against his. It felt as though electricity zipped through her. She had never felt this way before. Although she had also never kissed anyone before now. He seemed to hesitate, but then he deepened the kiss. His arms circled around her and pulled her closer to him. Therefore, closeness sent shocks through her body. All she wanted in this moment was to remain in his embrace.
He slowly pulled away. “I think we should stop here,” he breathed. His face was bright red.
“Did I do something wrong?” she worried.
“Not at all... but you wanted to take things slow... and if we were to continue, I don't think I would be able to control myself,” he admitted.
“Oh... I see...” She understood his words and appreciated that he had listened to her, but still, a small part of her wanted more and wanted it all now. “Thank you.”
“Are you hungry?” he questioned, trying to pull their attention away from what they both wanted in this moment.
“Maybe for a snack,” she responded.
“How about a snack and a movie?” he offered.
“That sounds nice,” she smiled as she sat down on the sofa and waited for him to join.
One week later...
The week had passed by without further incidents. Well... they had found each other's lips a handful of times, but otherwise, nothing. Cora and Pierceton had instead tried to get to know each other more. They had talked, played games, taken short walks, and even cooked together. Just as they were sitting down to have breakfast together, a portal suddenly appeared.
“I guess it’s time,” he told her as he glanced over at the glowing blue portal.
“Can I come as well?”
He shook his head. “Not this time.”
“Why not?” she pleaded.
“Just in case,” he responded. She knew what he meant. The news could be bad, and he didn’t want her to find out... not yet.
“Fine, I’ll wait here... but I won’t like it,” she grumbled.
“Thank you,” he chuckled as he went around the table to her. He leaned down and kissed her on the forehead. As he was pulling away, she grabbed him and pulled him back down to her, placing her lips against hers. “Thank you again,” he whispered as he pulled away from her.
“You’re welcome,” she beamed at him. “Don’t be gone too long.”
“I will return as soon as I can,” he promised. “Stay here and try to keep yourself occupied.”
She watched as he walked away and slipped through the portal. This was it. When he returned, she would know what they were going to be able to do next. All she had to do was wait a little. Just a little. She finished eating the food Pierceton had prepared before leaving, cleared the table and decided to get the day started. She showered, dressed and was just sitting down to read one of the many books he had conjured for her when she heard a sound from outside the house.
Before she could reach the door, she smelled something, and then she saw Fang’s reaction. Quickly, she ducked out of view from any of the windows. Fang remained in view, and she could hear her growling at whoever was there. A moment later, there was a knock at the door. “Sir, I’m sorry for intruding once again. However, we have a few more questions.” His voice sounded familiar. Where had she heard it before? “I understand that this is all of a sudden, and we spoke over a month ago, but we continue to track the girl we told you about back around this area.”
She could hear the man conversing with others outside. It was them. They had been hunting her. How could she have forgotten about them? Pierceton had said that he had covered her tracks. How could they keep coming back to this area? Did they suspect something? Or were they simply trying to go back through the last areas in which she had been spotted by them?
“If you aren’t going to answer, we are going to have to enter your home. We have received permission to enter any home in which we believe we will find the one we are looking for,” he bellowed through the door.
She could practically feel her heart pounding so hard she could hear it. Her hands and feet went cold, and she felt as though time had stopped. “Fang...” she muttered. Her dog seemed to understand what she needed to do.
When the door began to open, Fang stepped in front, growling. She sounded vicious, as though she were the most dangerous dog that anyone had ever encountered. It seemed to force the men on the other side to give entering a second thought. But only a second thought. Even that second was enough for her to push herself to move quickly, but quietly, to the bathroom. There wasn’t time to close the door, but she was still able to get out of eyeline from the entrance to the cabin.
