CHAPTER 17: THE PROMISE

821 Words
The drive back from the charity luncheon was unusually quiet. Mackenzie leaned against the window of her car, replaying the afternoon in her mind. Vincent Moretti. The way Kelvin had reacted. The subtle step he had taken in front of her. Almost as if... He had been shielding her. She sighed. "What kind of world have I walked into?" --- At Lawson Manor... Kelvin stood in his private study, staring at an old map of Valestia hanging on the wall. Different territories were marked with colored pins. Blue for the Lawson Family. Red for the DeLuca Family. Silver for the Moretti Family. Damien entered. "Our men confirmed it." Kelvin didn't turn around. "Vincent and Ricardo met for almost an hour." "What did they discuss?" "We don't know." Kelvin clenched his jaw. "I don't like unknowns." Damien nodded. "Neither do I." After a long silence, Kelvin finally spoke. "Increase security around Lawson Tower, the manor... and Mackenzie." "Already done." Kelvin gave a faint nod. "You always stay one step ahead." "I learned from you." --- The following morning... Mackenzie arrived at Giovanni Events earlier than usual. Her employees were busy preparing decorations for another corporate event. Everything seemed normal. Until Clara rushed into her office. "Boss!" "What is it?" "A man is asking to see you." "Did he make an appointment?" "No." "He says it's personal." Mackenzie frowned. "I'll meet him." --- In the reception area stood an elderly gentleman dressed in a simple gray suit. He smiled kindly. "Miss Giovanni?" "Yes." He handed her a small velvet box. "This was left with me many years ago." She looked confused. "For me?" "For the woman your father always believed you would become." "My father?" The man nodded. "We served together in the community council years ago." "He asked me to give this to you when your business became successful." Mackenzie slowly opened the box. Inside was a delicate silver pendant shaped like a dove. Beneath it was a handwritten note. > My dearest Mackenzie, If you're reading this, it means you've achieved your dream. Never measure success by money alone. Measure it by the lives you touch and the kindness you leave behind. I will always be proud of you. — Dad Tears welled in her eyes. She carefully held the pendant against her heart. "Thank you," she whispered. The elderly man smiled warmly. "Your father believed you'd do great things." "He was right." --- Across the city... Kelvin received a call from Damien. "Boss." "Miss Giovanni had an unexpected visitor this morning." Kelvin's expression sharpened. "Is she safe?" "Yes." "It was an old family friend." Kelvin relaxed slightly. "What happened?" Damien explained about the pendant and the letter. For a moment, Kelvin said nothing. Then he smiled faintly. "Her father sounds like a wise man." --- That evening... Mackenzie stopped by a quiet riverside park before heading home. She needed time to think. She sat on a wooden bench overlooking the water. A few minutes later... Someone sat beside her. She looked up. Kelvin. "You've become very good at surprising me," she said. "I had a meeting nearby." He glanced at the river. "I hoped I might find you here." She smiled. "How?" "You mentioned once that you like quiet places." She laughed softly. "You remembered." "I remember everything you tell me." A comfortable silence settled between them. After a while, Mackenzie spoke. "My father always believed people should be judged by their actions." Kelvin looked at her. "And what do your actions tell you about me?" She thought carefully. "They tell me you're trying to protect me." "They also tell me you're carrying a burden you don't talk about." Kelvin looked out over the river. "I've made decisions that can't be undone." "I've lost people." "I've made enemies." His voice was calm, but heavy with truth. "I don't regret protecting the people I love." Mackenzie turned toward him. "Then don't carry it alone." The words caught him completely off guard. For years... Everyone had asked him for protection. Power. Money. Fear. No one had ever offered to share his burden. Their eyes met. Kelvin quietly said, "I can't promise you'll never be in danger." She nodded. "I know." "But I can promise you this..." His voice was steady. "As long as I breathe..." "No one will ever face you alone." Mackenzie's heart skipped. She believed him. Not because he was powerful. Because he meant every word. --- Unknown to them... Across the river, a camera lens focused on the bench. Click. Another photograph. The photographer lowered the camera and made a call. "Boss." "They're together again." Ricardo listened silently. Then asked one question. "Does she trust him?" The man looked through the lens once more. "Yes." Ricardo slowly smiled. "Perfect." He ended the call. Then turned toward Vincent Moretti. "The time for watching is over." Vincent folded his hands. "And the next move?" Ricardo's eyes grew cold. "We separate them."
