CHAPTER 21: BEHIND THE GATES

930 Words
Mackenzie stood quietly in the grand foyer of Lawson Manor, taking in her surroundings. The mansion was breathtaking. Towering marble columns stretched toward a magnificent crystal chandelier. A sweeping staircase curved gracefully to the second floor, while priceless paintings decorated the walls. It looked less like a home... And more like a palace. A housekeeper approached with a warm smile. "Good evening, Miss Giovanni." "I'm Elena, the head housekeeper." "It's a pleasure to finally meet you." Mackenzie smiled politely. "It's nice to meet you too." Before she could say another word, Kelvin descended the staircase. He had changed out of his suit and into a simple black sweater and dark trousers. For the first time since she'd met him... He looked relaxed. Almost ordinary. "You didn't have to come all this way," he said. "I know." She held up the now-empty thermal container. "But I'm glad I did." A faint smile tugged at his lips. "So am I." --- Kelvin led her into a cozy sitting room overlooking the gardens. A fire crackled gently in the fireplace, filling the room with warmth. Mackenzie looked around. "This doesn't look like what I expected." He poured two cups of tea. "What were you expecting?" "I don't know..." She laughed softly. "Something darker." "More intimidating." Kelvin handed her a cup. "I spend enough time intimidating people outside this house." "When I'm here..." "I prefer peace." She accepted the tea. "That's nice." --- As they talked, Elena entered carrying a plate of freshly baked cookies. "I thought you might like these." "Thank you," Mackenzie said warmly. Elena smiled. "It's been a long time since Mr. Lawson invited someone here." Mackenzie looked at Kelvin in surprise. "Really?" Kelvin cleared his throat. "Elena." The older woman laughed. "I'll leave you two alone." As soon as she left, Mackenzie couldn't hide her curiosity. "So..." "I really am the first?" Kelvin nodded. "I don't mix my personal life with business." She looked at him carefully. "Then why me?" He didn't answer immediately. Instead, he walked toward the large window overlooking the gardens. "When my parents were alive..." "My mother used to say that a person's character is revealed by how they treat those who have nothing to offer them." He turned to face her. "I've watched you." "You respect everyone." "The waiters." "The cleaners." "The drivers." "The children at the charity gala." "You never pretend to be kind." "You simply are." Mackenzie felt her cheeks warm. "No one's ever described me like that." "Then they haven't been paying attention." --- A comfortable silence settled between them. For the first time, neither felt the need to fill it with words. --- Suddenly... Damien knocked gently before entering. "Boss." Kelvin looked up. "What is it?" "Our cybersecurity team found something." Damien handed him a tablet. "The manor's security cameras were accessed remotely last night." Kelvin's expression darkened. "They saw her." Damien nodded. "We believe so." Mackenzie frowned. "What does that mean?" Kelvin looked at her. "It means Ricardo knows you've been here." She instinctively tightened her grip on the teacup. "Will that make things worse?" Kelvin walked closer. "It changes things." "But it doesn't change my promise." "I'll protect you." She met his gaze. "I don't want innocent people getting hurt because of me." Kelvin's voice was calm but unwavering. "You are not responsible for another man's choices." --- Just then, one of the estate guards rushed into the hallway. "Mr. Lawson!" Damien immediately stepped outside. A moment later, he returned. "They've found an intruder near the north fence." Kelvin's face became unreadable. "Alive?" "Yes." "Bring him to the security room." He turned to Mackenzie. "I'm sorry." "I have to deal with this." She nodded. "I understand." "I'll wait here." Kelvin hesitated. "I'd rather you stayed with Elena." She smiled reassuringly. "I'll be fine." --- Downstairs, in the estate's security room... A frightened young man sat handcuffed to a chair. He couldn't have been older than twenty-two. Kelvin entered. "Your name." "Leo." "Who sent you?" "No one." Kelvin remained silent. The young man looked away. "I was paid..." "By who?" "I don't know his name." "He just told me to photograph the manor." Kelvin studied him carefully. The fear in the young man's eyes was genuine. He wasn't a trained criminal. He was desperate. "What did he promise you?" The young man's voice shook. "Money." "My little sister needs surgery." The room fell silent. Damien watched Kelvin closely. After a long pause, Kelvin spoke. "Untie him." One of the guards looked confused. "Boss?" "I said untie him." The guards obeyed. Kelvin reached into his jacket and wrote something on a card. He handed it to the young man. "Take this to Lawson Children's Hospital tomorrow morning." "They'll know what to do." Leo stared at the card. "My sister..." "Her treatment will be covered." Tears filled the young man's eyes. "Why?" Kelvin answered simply, "Because your sister shouldn't suffer for your mistakes." Leo fell to his knees. "I swear I'll never work for them again." Kelvin nodded once. "Go." --- Upstairs... Mackenzie had unknowingly witnessed everything from the hallway. She had expected anger. Violence. Punishment. Instead... She saw compassion. As Kelvin returned, their eyes met. "You let him go." "I did." She smiled softly. "You surprised me again." Kelvin looked at her for a moment. "The world already has enough cruel men." "I don't intend to become another one." Mackenzie's heart skipped. In that moment... She realized she wasn't just falling for the powerful billionaire everyone feared. She was falling for the man only a few people ever got to see.
