The following morning arrived under a gray sky.
A light mist covered the hills surrounding Noctis as a convoy of black SUVs made its way toward the abandoned church.
Kelvin sat in the front vehicle beside Damien.
In his coat pocket rested the old brass key Margaret had entrusted to him.
Behind them, another SUV carried Mackenzie.
Although Kelvin had wanted her to remain at Lawson Manor, she had refused.
"I'm coming with you," she had said.
"If this journey is about your family's past, you shouldn't have to face it alone."
For once...
Kelvin hadn't argued.
---
The abandoned church stood exactly as the old reports had described.
Its stone walls were cracked with age, and vines climbed over the broken bell tower.
The heavy wooden doors creaked open as Damien pushed them inward.
Dust floated through the air.
"It doesn't look like anyone has been here for years," one of the guards murmured.
Damien shook his head.
"Looks can be deceiving."
---
Inside, silence surrounded them.
Sunlight filtered through shattered stained-glass windows, casting colorful reflections across the worn stone floor.
Kelvin slowly walked toward the old altar.
He unfolded the faded map that had been hidden inside his father's records.
Margaret's handwriting marked a single location.
Beneath the altar.
Damien signaled to the guards.
Within minutes, they carefully moved the heavy stone slab.
Hidden beneath it was a narrow staircase leading underground.
Mackenzie looked at Kelvin.
"Are you ready?"
He took a slow breath.
"I've been waiting for this moment my entire life."
---
The staircase led to a small underground chamber.
Time seemed to have forgotten the place.
Cobwebs hung from the ceiling, and the scent of old wood filled the air.
In the center of the room stood the chest.
Exactly where the photograph had suggested.
Kelvin approached slowly.
His heartbeat echoed in his ears.
He removed the brass key from his pocket.
For a brief moment, he hesitated.
Then...
He inserted the key into the lock.
Click.
The old lock opened effortlessly.
---
Everyone gathered around as Kelvin slowly lifted the lid.
Inside were several neatly wrapped items.
A bundle of handwritten letters.
A leather-bound journal.
A small velvet pouch.
And a sealed envelope addressed in elegant handwriting.
To My Son.
Kelvin frowned.
"I already received my father's letter."
Damien looked closer.
"This isn't addressed to you."
Kelvin turned the envelope over.
The name on the front had been partially smudged by time.
But one word remained perfectly clear.
Romano.
Mackenzie looked up.
"So this was meant for Edward Romano's son."
Kelvin nodded slowly.
"The child."
---
Before opening anything else, Kelvin picked up the leather journal.
The first page read:
The Lawson–Romano Partnership
Below the title was a handwritten sentence.
«If this journal is ever found, it means we failed to protect the truth.»
Kelvin carefully turned the page.
The journal detailed years of friendship between Alexander Lawson and Edward Romano.
Business ventures.
Charity projects.
Dreams of building a safer Valestia.
Nothing suggested betrayal.
Nothing explained the fire.
Then...
A folded document slipped from between the pages.
Damien picked it up.
"It looks like a contract."
Kelvin unfolded it.
At the bottom were three signatures.
Alexander Lawson.
Edward Romano.
And...
A third signature.
The ink had faded badly.
Only one initial remained visible.
R.
---
The underground chamber fell silent.
"Who is 'R'?" Mackenzie asked.
Kelvin slowly folded the document.
"I don't know."
"But whoever it was..."
"They were trusted enough to sign this agreement."
---
Suddenly...
One of the guards spoke through his earpiece.
"Sir."
Damien turned.
"What is it?"
"We have movement outside."
"How many?"
"One vehicle."
"It hasn't approached."
"It's just... watching."
Damien immediately signaled two guards.
"Stay alert."
Kelvin closed the chest.
"We're leaving."
"No."
Mackenzie touched his arm gently.
"You've waited twenty-two years."
"Take everything."
"We'll examine it safely at the manor."
Kelvin nodded.
"She's right."
The guards carefully packed every document into secure evidence cases.
Not a single page was left behind.
---
Far above them...
Hidden among the trees overlooking the church...
A man lowered his binoculars.
He spoke quietly into his phone.
"They found the journal."
Ricardo listened without interrupting.
"And the contract?"
"They have that too."
For the first time in a long while...
Ricardo smiled.
"Excellent."
Vincent looked at him in surprise.
"They've uncovered exactly what you wanted to keep hidden."
Ricardo slowly shook his head.
"No."
"They've uncovered..."
"...exactly what I wanted them to find."
---
As the convoy drove back toward Noctis, Kelvin held the journal on his lap.
Something told him the biggest secret wasn't inside the chest.
It was hidden somewhere between the missing pages...
And the mysterious signature marked only by a single letter.
R.
