Chapter 11 - Match One

“You’re late.” The voice cut through the air the moment Kai stepped into the arena hall. Dozens of eyes turned toward him instantly. The space was far larger than the training halls, built like a controlled battleground with reinforced flooring and elevated seating surrounding the center. Students filled the stands in scattered groups, their voices blending into a low hum of anticipation. At the center stood the instructor, his expression neutral but his gaze sharp. Kai didn’t react to the attention. He walked forward at a steady pace, stopping at the marked line. “I’m here,” he said calmly. A few students scoffed from the stands. “Level Zero actually showed up.” “Thought he’d run.” Kai ignored them. The instructor’s gaze lingered on him for a moment before shifting slightly. “Match One has already been delayed,” he said. “We won’t wait any longer.” Kai nodded once. Across the arena, another figure stepped forward. “Guess I got lucky.” The voice carried confidence, but not arrogance. Kai looked up. The boy walking toward the opposite side of the arena wasn’t like Rex. His posture was relaxed, his expression composed, and his eyes… focused. Very focused. “Name’s Arin Vale,” he said, stopping at his position. “C-Rank.” Kai didn’t respond immediately. Arin tilted his head slightly, studying him. “You’re the Level Zero, right?” he added. “I am.” A faint smile crossed Arin’s face, but it wasn’t mocking. “Good,” he said. “I was hoping for something interesting.” That alone told Kai everything. This wasn’t someone who underestimated him. This was someone who wanted to test him. The instructor stepped back. “Both participants ready?” Kai adjusted his stance slightly, his breathing steady. “Yes.” Arin rolled his shoulders once, his movements loose but controlled. “Ready.” A brief pause followed. Then— “Begin.” Arin moved first. Not recklessly. Not aggressively. Just fast enough to close distance while watching. Kai reacted instantly, stepping back as Arin’s first strike came in low, aimed toward his midsection. The movement was clean, efficient, without wasted motion. Kai blocked. The impact was sharp, the force behind it stronger than expected. Arin didn’t stop. He shifted immediately, his second strike coming from the side, forcing Kai to adjust his footing. Kai stepped back again. Arin pressed forward. Each movement flowed into the next, his attacks controlled, calculated, testing rather than overwhelming. Kai’s eyes narrowed slightly. This wasn’t like Rex. There was no blind aggression here. Every move had intent. Every strike had purpose. Kai deflected another attack, his arm tightening slightly as the force transferred through his body. He felt it. The strain. The pressure building. The system responded. Faint. Quiet. But present. Kai shifted his stance. Arin noticed. His eyes sharpened. “You’re adapting already,” he said. Kai didn’t answer. Arin stepped in again, this time faster. His footwork changed, his angle shifting unexpectedly as he closed the gap. His strike came from a higher angle, forcing Kai to react differently. Kai barely blocked it in time. The impact pushed him back a step. A murmur spread through the crowd. “C-Rank pressure already?” “He’s not even using full speed yet.” Kai steadied himself. Arin didn’t rush. He stepped back slightly, watching. “Your reaction improved,” he said. “Second adjustment.” Kai exhaled slowly. So he had noticed that too. Arin’s expression shifted slightly, interest deepening. “That’s not normal,” he added. Kai’s gaze remained steady. “Neither is Level Zero.” A faint smirk appeared on Arin’s face. “Fair point.” Then he moved again. This time, faster. No testing. No hesitation. His body blurred slightly as he closed the distance, his strike aimed directly at Kai’s shoulder. Kai reacted. His movement was quicker than before. He blocked. The impact hit harder. His arm shook slightly under the force, but he held. And in that moment— The shift came. Clearer. Stronger. His muscles adjusted. His stance stabilized. Kai pushed forward. Arin’s eyes widened slightly. For the first time— Kai attacked. His strike was direct, aimed at Arin’s center. Arin reacted instantly, stepping aside, but his expression had changed. “You’re learning mid-fight,” he said. Kai didn’t respond. He moved again. His second attack came faster. More precise. Arin blocked this time, but the impact made him shift slightly. Not much. But enough. The crowd reacted. “Wait… did he just push him back?” “That’s not possible.” Arin stepped back, reassessing. His gaze sharpened. “Alright,” he said quietly. “Let’s stop testing.” Kai felt it. The change in atmosphere. The shift from observation— To seriousness. Arin’s posture lowered slightly, his movements tightening as he focused. “This might hurt,” he added. Then he disappeared. Not completely. But fast enough to blur. Kai’s eyes tracked him, but just barely. The next attack came from the side— Too fast. Kai reacted instinctively, raising his arm to block. The impact slammed into him. Hard. His body shifted back, his footing breaking as he slid across the ground. Gasps echoed through the arena. Kai steadied himself, his arm burning from the impact. That was different. Stronger. Faster. Arin stepped forward slowly, his gaze locked onto Kai. “That was about half,” he said. Kai’s breathing remained steady. But his body felt it. The strain. The pressure. The system reacted. More intensely this time. His muscles tightened, adjusting faster than before. The pain dulled slightly. His stance corrected itself. Kai lifted his head. His eyes locked onto Arin again. Arin noticed. And for the first time— He smiled. “That’s it,” he said. “That look.” Kai stepped forward. Not hesitating. Not waiting. He moved. Faster than before. His strike came in sharp, direct, forcing Arin to react instead of observe. Arin blocked— But his arm shifted more this time. The difference was small. But undeniable. Kai followed up immediately. Another strike. Then another. Each one sharper. More controlled. More refined. The system surged. The adaptation accelerated. Arin stepped back, his expression changing from interest— To focus. “You’re getting faster,” he said. Kai didn’t stop. He pushed forward again. Arin moved to counter— But this time— Kai adjusted mid-motion. His angle shifted. His strike changed direction. Arin’s eyes widened— Just slightly. The hit landed. Clean. A sharp impact against his side. The arena went silent. For a split second— No one moved. Arin stepped back slowly, his hand brushing the spot where the strike landed. Then he looked up. His eyes were no longer calm. They were sharp. Serious. “Alright,” he said quietly. The air around him shifted. Kai felt it instantly. Pressure. Real pressure. “Now it’s a fight.” Kai’s breathing slowed. His focus sharpened. The system pulsed. Something deeper responded. And as Arin took his next step forward— Kai realized one thing clearly. This wasn’t going to be a simple match. And the next move— Would decide everything. 🔥
