CHAPTER 21: The Fire Within

695 Words
Zara hadn’t been in her new office for more than thirty minutes before the first storm hit. A scathing anonymous blog post hit the internet, accusing her of faking her credentials, calling her Xavier Cole’s "bedroom CEO," and declaring her recent promotion a disgrace to corporate integrity. The post went viral in under an hour. By lunch, it was trending worldwide. Tasha burst into the office with her phone in hand. "They really woke up and chose violence today. You see this?" Zara nodded, expression unreadable. “Let them talk.” Tasha blinked. “Girl, you good?” “I’m tired. Not weak. There’s a difference.” --- Across town, Victor Cole poured himself a drink in his estate study, watching the trending hashtags with a satisfied smirk. Celeste stood near the window, swirling red wine. “You think this’ll make him drop her?” she asked, not looking at him. Victor chuckled darkly. “No. But it will make everyone else question his judgment. That’s all I need.” Celeste turned, eyes sharp. “And if it doesn’t?” Victor met her gaze. “Then we bring out the real scandal.” --- Xavier held an emergency meeting with his crisis PR team. “We either address this head-on, or let it spiral,” his advisor said. Xavier stood, buttoning his jacket. “I’m holding a press conference.” Gasps. “But sir—” “I’m not hiding. And I’m not letting them tear her down.” --- The next day, the media gathered at Cole Industries. Reporters. Cameras. Livestreams. The building pulsed with electric tension. Xavier stepped onto the podium. > “This company has always stood for power, innovation, and excellence. Today, I stand to remind the world that those values include respect—and truth.” He looked directly into the camera. > “Zara Martins is a brilliant strategist. She earned her place. No rumor, no lie, will ever change that. And to those who seek to bury her with gossip, I offer only this: the Cole Empire doesn’t bend to cowards.” Mic drop. --- Inside the building, Zara watched the livestream in stunned silence. The office was dead quiet. Her doubters? Silent. Tasha whispered, “You better marry that man.” --- Victor was furious. He threw his tumbler against the wall, the shatter echoing through the estate. “They’re turning public sympathy into a weapon,” Celeste muttered. Victor hissed. “Time for phase two.” He dialed a number. “Leak the file. The one about her mother.” --- That night, Zara got a call from a journalist. “Care to comment on the revelation that your mother was accused of embezzlement before she disappeared?” Zara’s knees buckled. “What?” “It’s public record now. Charges dropped due to lack of evidence, but the story’s out.” Zara dropped the phone. Her hands trembled. Tasha caught her. “Z, talk to me. What is it?” Zara whispered, “My mother… she was framed. I thought it was buried.” --- Xavier arrived within minutes. One look at Zara’s face and he turned to Tasha. “Give us a moment.” He knelt before Zara. “Tell me everything.” She did. How her mother worked for a large corporation. How she was accused of stealing millions. How the case disappeared—but so did her mom. Zara had spent years hiding it. “I thought if anyone found out, I’d never get hired anywhere again.” Xavier pulled her into his arms. “That’s what Victor wanted. To make you feel powerless.” “But why now?” she asked. He exhaled. “Because he knows your strength. And now he’s trying to hit where you’re softest.” --- Days later, Xavier uncovered proof Victor had ties to the corporation that accused Zara’s mom. The puzzle pieces clicked. Victor orchestrated it all. Zara’s voice shook. “He destroyed my family.” Xavier nodded. “And he’s not getting away with it.” Zara stood. Her eyes no longer wet. They burned. “Then let’s destroy his mask. Brick by brick.”
