Chapter 6: The Gala

1569 Words
The invitation arrived in a cream envelope sealed with gold wax. Mia stared at it for a long moment, her name embossed in elegant script across the front. Inside, a single card read: "You are cordially invited to the Wolf Industries Annual Charity Gala. Black tie. Saturday, 8 PM." Mia's stomach tightened. A gala. A room full of the city's elite, all of them watching her, judging her, waiting for her to trip up and reveal the truth about her engagement. She had seen events like this in magazines and movies, but she had never attended one herself. The thought of walking into a room full of strangers who would dissect her every move made her feel nauseous. She had been dreading this moment since she signed the contract. "Mia?" She looked up. Alexander stood in the doorway of the guest room, dressed in a perfectly tailored tuxedo. His black hair was swept back from his angular face, his jaw clean-shaven, his eyes dark and intense. He looked like he had stepped out of a magazine — devastatingly handsome, utterly composed, and completely untouchable. The black fabric of his tuxedo hugged his broad shoulders, and the crisp white shirt contrasted sharply with his tanned skin. "The car is waiting," he said, his voice low and smooth. Mia swallowed hard. "I'm not sure I can do this." Alexander stepped into the room, his expression softening almost imperceptibly. The hard lines of his face relaxed, and something gentle flickered in his eyes. "Yes, you can." His voice was firm but gentle, carrying a reassurance she hadn't expected. "You've faced worse than a room full of strangers." "I've faced you," she said, a weak attempt at humor. "That's not the same thing." His lips curved into a faint smile — a rare, genuine expression that made her heart skip. "I'm flattered." Mia rolled her eyes, but a reluctant smile tugged at her lips despite herself. "You're impossible." "So you've said." He extended his hand. "Come. Let's show them what a power couple looks like." She hesitated for only a moment before placing her hand in his. The warmth of his palm spread through her, steadying her nerves in a way she didn't want to admit. She rose to her feet, smoothing down the folds of her gown — a stunning midnight-blue creation that hugged her curves and shimmered under the light. The fabric was soft against her skin, the color complementing her dark hair and amber eyes perfectly. Alexander's gaze swept over her, and something dark and hungry flickered in his eyes. His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. "You're beautiful," he said quietly, his voice rough with an emotion she couldn't name. Mia's cheeks flushed with heat. "You're just saying that." Alexander stepped closer, his hand finding her chin and tilting her face up to meet his gaze. His eyes bore into hers, intense and unwavering. "I never say anything I don't mean." She stopped breathing. The world around her seemed to fade away, leaving only him — his warmth, his scent, the intensity of his gaze. And then he released her, stepping back like nothing had happened. Mia exhaled shakily, her heart pounding. "You're going to be the death of me." "Not yet," he said smoothly, a ghost of a smile on his lips. "I need you alive for the contract." She wanted to punch him. She wanted to kiss him. She wasn't sure which impulse was stronger. The venue was the Grand Ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel — a massive space of chandeliers, champagne fountains, and the glittering elite of the city. Mia stepped out of the car and felt the weight of the night pressing down on her like a physical force. She could see the paparazzi gathered along the red carpet, cameras flashing like lightning bolts, voices calling out for attention. She was terrified. Alexander's hand found hers, his fingers interlacing with her own. "Stay close," he murmured in her ear, his breath warm against her skin. "Let me do the talking." "I can talk," she said, her voice steadier than she felt. "I know you can. But tonight, your job is to look beautiful and smile. Can you do that?" Mia gritted her teeth. "Fine." They walked down the red carpet together, Alexander's arm wrapped possessively around her waist. The cameras exploded with light, blinding her momentarily. Mia kept her smile fixed in place, nodding and waving like the perfect fiancée. She could hear the whispers — "Who is she?" "She's beautiful." "Is that Alexander Wolf's new fiancée?" — and she forced herself to keep walking. Inside, the ballroom was even more overwhelming. Crystal chandeliers cast rainbows across the marble floor. Tables were draped in white linen, laden with centerpieces of roses and orchids that perfumed the air with their sweet fragrance. The guests were dressed in their finest — diamonds, furs, designer gowns worth more than Mia's annual salary. Everywhere she looked, she saw wealth and privilege. And everywhere she looked, she saw eyes watching her. "You're doing well," Alexander murmured in her ear, his voice low and approving. "They're curious about you." "Let them be curious," she said. "I'm an enigma." He laughed — low and rough, a sound that sent a shiver down her spine. "You are, aren't you?" A waiter approached with a tray of champagne glasses. Alexander took two and handed one to her. She accepted it gratefully, taking a sip to calm her nerves. The bubbles tickled her throat, but the warmth of the alcohol helped steady her trembling hands. And that's when she saw him. The silver-haired man from the board meeting — Mr. Harrington. He was standing near the center of the room, surrounded by a group of executives in expensive suits. His eyes found hers across the crowd, and a slow, sinister smile spread across his weathered face. Mia's stomach plummeted. "Alexander," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Mr. Harrington is here." Alexander's gaze followed hers, and she saw his jaw tighten with barely contained fury. "I know. Stay close to me." Harrington made his way toward them, cutting through the crowd like a shark through water. The guests parted for him, sensing the tension radiating from his approach. "Mr. Wolf," he said smoothly, extending his hand. "And Ms. Chen. What a pleasure to see you both tonight." Alexander's handshake was brief and cold, his eyes like ice. "Harrington. I didn't expect to see you here." "I wouldn't miss it," Harrington said, his smile widening. "After all, I'm very interested in your union." His gaze slid to Mia, sharp and predatory. "Ms. Chen, you look stunning tonight. How fortunate that you've found love in such difficult circumstances." Mia's smile was razor-sharp. "Fortunate indeed." Harrington leaned closer, his voice dropping to a whisper meant only for her. "I know you don't love him, Ms. Chen. I know this is a contract. And I will prove it." Mia's face remained impassive, but her heart hammered violently against her ribs. "I don't know what you're talking about." "No?" His smile widened, revealing teeth that looked almost predatory. "Then you won't mind answering a few questions about your engagement. Such as why you didn't announce it to your family before the board meeting. Or why you've never visited the Wolf family home." Mia's blood ran cold. How did he know so much? Who was feeding him information? Alexander stepped in, his voice like a blade of ice. "Harrington, I suggest you keep your distance from my fiancée." "I'm just being friendly," Harrington said smoothly, raising his hands in mock surrender. "No need to be defensive, Mr. Wolf. Unless, of course, you have something to hide." The tension between them was electric, drawing the attention of nearby guests. Mia felt the weight of their gazes, the whispers that were already spreading like wildfire. "Alexander," she said softly, placing her hand on his arm. "Let's find our table." Alexander's gaze remained fixed on Harrington, but he allowed her to pull him away. His body was coiled with tension, his jaw tight. "Stay away from her," he said coldly, his voice carrying a warning. "Or I'll make you regret it." Harrington's smile didn't waver. "I'm shaking, Mr. Wolf. I truly am." Alexander led Mia toward the far end of the room, his hand pressed firmly against her back. She could feel the tension radiating from him, the barely contained fury simmering beneath his composed exterior. "How does he know so much?" she whispered, her voice trembling. "I don't know," Alexander said, his voice strained. "But I'm going to find out." They reached their table, and Alexander pulled out her chair with a forced smile. But his eyes were dark, dangerous, and full of cold calculation. Mia sat down, her heart racing. She had known this arrangement would be complicated. She had known there would be enemies. But she hadn't expected to face them so soon — or so publicly. "I'm sorry," Alexander said quietly, leaning close so only she could hear. "I didn't think he'd come tonight." "It's fine," she said, forcing herself to breathe. "I can handle him." His hand found hers beneath the table, his fingers intertwining with her own. "I know you can. But you don't have to." She looked into his eyes, searching for the truth behind his words. And for the first time, she believed him. --- To be continued...
