Comic Figure (bounds onto stage and rings a bell): Hey, pickpockets, ragamuffins, hooligans, pagans, hold your tongues! Shut up there, you ignorant runts, tone down your voices! A comedy is about to unfold here, a funny interlude.
Seminarians: Quiet! A comedy! An interlude!
Comic Figure: Rhetoricians and auditors, grammarians and brethren... The indigent, the middle classes and the wor-r-rking intelligentsia. Both Party members and those not in the Party, and even the honest non-Party members. Those who were purged and had their memberships
