Don’t bet on horses. Because far too often horses bring disappointment. The damned beast struts past you before the race, tail in the air, and neighs and prances, as if to say:
‘Bet on me!’
You place your bet on him, and he drags his feet for two days to cover the mile…
He runs along and cries:
“Let me go, jockey! My word. I’ll beat them all…”
The jockey, of course, guides the horse along, for he too wants some bread and butter occasionally…
Well, you don’t win… The jockey wins… He’s like that.
Cards are a dubious means of making money too. Sure, you can win, but then you may have to ‘play back’. And this already spells great unpleasantness for the wife and the mother-in-law, for it is too cold now to queue outside prison with food parcels.
