Chapter 14 — The Blood Moon Rising

1077 Words
The forest changed. Lena felt it first—a vibration under her feet, subtle at first, then growing, like a heartbeat waking from a long sleep. Aiden stiffened beside her, his hand hovering near her back, ready to catch her again if she stumbled. Above the treetops, clouds tore open as if clawed apart, and a strange red glow began to leak through. Aiden’s breath hitched. “Oh no… not tonight.” Lena looked up. The moon—huge, swollen, bleeding light—was forcing its way through the clouds. “The Blood Moon…” Aiden whispered, voice low and tense. “Varek planned this.” The path ahead brightened in an otherworldly, unnatural red. Shadows stretched long and trembling across the ground, pulsing with energy that didn’t feel like it belonged in the mortal world. Lena grabbed Aiden’s arm. “What does it mean?” He swallowed hard. “It amplifies everything. Strength. Rage. Power. Varek will be unstoppable until dawn.” “And me?” Lena whispered. Aiden looked at her—really looked. “You’re a Keeper, Lena. The Blood Moon doesn’t just strengthen monsters… it strengthens ancient bloodlines.” The forest trembled again, branches bending as if bowing toward her. Aiden stepped back, eyes widening slightly. “You’re reacting to it.” No—the moon was reacting to her. A soft wind spiraled around Lena’s feet, carrying whispers she didn’t recognize. Symbols flared faintly beneath the skin of her arms—only for a heartbeat, but Aiden saw them. Aiden’s voice was quiet, almost reverent: “The spirits are awake…” But before Lena could respond, a distant howl rose—long, furious, crackling with power. It wasn’t from a wolf. It was from something deeper, something touched directly by the moon’s bloodlight. Aiden cursed under his breath. “He’s coming.” They hurried down the slope toward the gorge, but the forest shifted around them, paths twisting unnaturally. Lena felt like the trees were watching her—guiding her or judging her, she couldn’t tell. “Lena,” Aiden said suddenly. “The Blood Moon strips illusions. It shows truth.” He paused, jaw tightening. “It’s going to strip your fear bare too. You need to be ready.” “I am,” she said, even though her heart was racing. Aiden arched a brow. “Are you lying to me?” She let out a shaky cough. “Maybe a little.” He snorted. “Then hold on to me. Keep close. If we lose each other in this light—” A branch snapped behind them. Aiden spun, pulling Lena behind him. Out of the shadows stepped three figures—wolves half-shifted, eyes blazing red, fangs dripping. But these weren’t Varek’s warriors. These wolves were older—tattooed with tribal markings that flickered with the moonlight. Aiden whispered, “Ancient kin… awakened?” The lead wolf dropped to one knee, head lowered. When he spoke, his voice was surprisingly clear: “Keeper… the moon calls you.” Lena froze. “Me?” “You carry the medallion,” the wolf said. “Tonight, its seals break. You must choose your side before the moon reaches its peak.” Aiden tensed. “She chooses no side but survival.” “Survival is a side,” the wolf answered. Before Lena could speak, another sound split the night—louder than before, closer. A roar. Varek. Branches shattered as something massive tore through the trees, moving too fast to track. Aiden grabbed Lena’s hand. “Run!” The wolf warriors retreated into the shadows, vanishing as quickly as they’d appeared. Lena sprinted beside Aiden, her lungs burning. Red light flashed between the trees like lightning, casting the forest in violent, twisting shapes. The air tasted metallic, sharp. Then— A gust of wind hit them from behind, so powerful it lifted Lena off her feet. Aiden caught her midair, but the impact sent them both tumbling down a slope, rolling through dirt and leaves until they slammed against an old stone altar covered in moss. Lena groaned, pushing herself up. “Aiden—are you—” But he wasn’t looking at her. He was staring behind her… eyes wide with dread. She turned slowly. Varek stood atop the hill, outlined in the bleeding moonlight. His body was no longer human—not even half-shifted. He had fully embraced the Blood Moon’s power. His fur shimmered silver-red. His eyes burned like twin suns. The ground cracked under his weight. “A Keeper under a Blood Moon…” Varek growled, voice distorted. “You’re more valuable than I imagined.” Lena’s medallion pulsed wildly, reacting to his presence. Aiden shoved himself between them, claws extended. “You’ll die before you touch her.” Varek’s smile was feral. “Then tonight I’ll kill you first.” He lunged. Aiden barely dodged. Dust exploded around them. Lena scrambled back, heart slamming against her ribs. The two wolves collided—Aiden fast and desperate, Varek impossibly strong. Every strike from Varek sent shockwaves through the ground. Every dodge from Aiden grew slower, weaker. Then Varek grabbed Aiden’s shoulder and threw him like a rag doll across the clearing. Aiden crashed into the altar, coughing blood. “Aiden!” Lena screamed. Varek stalked toward her, eyes burning brighter with every step. “The moon recognizes you,” he murmured. “And so will the world once you stand at my side.” Lena’s medallion flared—so bright it hurt. The ground around her vibrated, runes glowing faintly. The Blood Moon reached its midpoint in the sky. And something ancient inside Lena snapped awake. Her fear evaporated. Her heartbeat synced perfectly with the pulse of the earth. The wind rose and circled her, carrying sparks of red light. Varek stopped, watching in awe. Aiden—bleeding, barely conscious—whispered, “Lena… don’t…lose yourself…” But Lena wasn’t losing herself. She was becoming what she was born to be. She lifted her head to the Blood Moon. And the moon answered. Light poured from her eyes, her hands, her skin—pure, wild, blinding. The runes on the altar ignited. The forest bowed. Varek shielded his face, snarling. “Keeper! You don’t know what you’re awakening!” Lena stepped forward, her voice echoing with the weight of countless spirits— “I’m done running.” The Blood Moon roared overhead. And the battle truly began.
