Chapter 4 Eva – As Kodan and I left the café his phone rang, and he answered it quickly showing me it was SPS. He listened intently, a crease formed between his eyebrows. He hung up. “I’m sorry I have to go, SPS intercepted another supernatural call and I am needed,” Kodan told me. “Sure, if you need my help let me know,” I said and kissed him goodbye. Kodan hurried off to his car and I walked to my office building. I wasn’t dressed for work, but I didn’t have any meetings today, so it didn’t really matter. I worked until early evening when Lilura texted me asking to meet for lunch tomorrow, which I agreed to. We hadn’t done a book club for a month so it would be nice to get together just the two of us and catch up on how things were going. I was at a good stopping point in my work and walked home. The first thing I did was grab out a glass and pour some blood in it. Then I curled up on my couch under my fuzzy blanket and turned on Netflix to watch my show. Four hours later Kodan texted me saying he was stuck at his office and wouldn’t be coming over. I was really bummed and focused on my show trying to forget about how much I was missing him. At some point, I fell asleep on my couch and was woken by the sun streaming in my living room window. I checked my phone for the time it was eleven o’clock and I had another message from Kodan letting me know that there were even more reports of supernatural activity coming in and his team had found ghost, poltergeists, and another zombie. I found it really strange and offered my help again. I stretched and got off my couch and hurried through the shower and dressing. Lilura texted that she was on the way so I grabbed my purse and headed to meet her at Market Square where we would decide what restaurant we wanted to go to. I waited by the women’s suffragette statue and Lilura arrived fifteen minutes later. We chose a new supernatural owned restaurant that had opened. It was really cute and cozy inside we were seated by a werewolf who pulled out a menu from her apron, it had "supernatural menu" written across the top in big bold red letters. It had blood for vampires, fae foods, large burgers and meats for werewolves, and regular portions of human food for witches. We ordered our food and looked around the restaurant, it was a good mix of supernatural and humans. They had a tv on in the corner that was playing the local news. Our food arrived ten minutes later; my blood was served in a soup bowl mixed in a tomato soup. “How’s your soup?” Lilura asked smiling. “It’s actually really good. I have never really had tomato soup before.” I told her keeping my conversation strictly human. “That doesn’t really surprise me. I’m glad this place opened so you could finally try it.” Lilura said with a wink. “Me too.” I began to say when the TV blared. The news turned to a special report and the volume was turned up. The newswoman was sitting at her news desk reading from a piece of paper. “I was just handed a report on supernatural sightings in the city.” The newswoman began, and the restaurant immediately tensed. “There has been an increase in calls to the police about ghost sightings, hauntings, and poltergeists as well as sightings of the Chupacabra. So far police haven’t found anything but reports of sightings keep rolling in. The police suspect that this started with a teenage prank gone wrong and now mass hysteria has set in and people are seeing what isn’t even there. The police are asking that you call this number for any sightings and leave 911 for real emergencies.” The newswoman said. The number was put up on the screen. She put her hand to her earpiece and nodded. “I have just been informed that an expert would like to speak we will now put up a live video call from famed Ghost Hunter Jimmie Howard.” “Hello,” Jimmie said as his live video call was put up next to the news anchor. “Hello, Jimmie. What is your take on this increase in paranormal cases?” The news anchor asked. “Well, I don’t think it's mass hysteria. Clearly, an increase of sightings means something has changed, or it could be that things are about to change. Ghosts are attracted to lightning storms and water because they can feed off that type of energy. Ghost activity can also increase in areas that have been disturbed for example when a haunted building is about to be torn down or renovated ghosts can get riled up at their environment being disrupted because if they are a residual haunting and follow the same pattern every night and suddenly everything is different it can throw them out of their loop and they become malicious or poltergeists. But do not fear I am already packing a booking a flight to Knoxville as we speak and with Jimmie on the case the city can rest easy knowing I will capture evidence of the hauntings and persuade them to move on to the other side.” Jimmie announced. “Thank you, Jimmie, for coming I know our views and town will be grateful for the help.” The news anchor said. I could feel the nervous energy in the room, and some of the supernaturals in the restaurant were looking at Lilura and me. Everyone knew that we formed a council and it seemed like they expected us to deal with this. I smiled and texted Kodan about the news report and told him to watch it if he hadn’t already. Lilura was playing with her food, I was no longer hungry as well. I waved our waitress over and paid. “Let’s get out of here,” I said. “Sure,” Lilura said. We left and took a walk to the park. Both of us silent until we reached the park where no one was around. “Well, I’m glad we can spend a little time together before things get crazy,” I said. “Me too, it has been a while since the two of us talked, and with Jimmie the ghost hunter on the way I know things will pick up,” Lilura said. “Yeah. I texted Kodan about the news report, you should probably check in with Tyr. By the way, how is that going?” I asked. “Tyr and I are doing okay; he keeps leaving to go to faerie without telling me then shows back up. The Seelie and Unseelie are at war and he is helping out. We had a small fight about it but I think we have moved past it. What about you and Kodan?” Lilura asked. “Well he has been busy getting SPS started and his father is pressuring him to take on more alpha responsibilities and find a suitable mate. I don’t think his father knows about the two of us. Kodan is worried that old animosities could be brought up and force us apart or him out of his pack. I told him I wouldn’t let that happen. I would dump him in a second if they threatened to push him out, not that I told him that.” “Sorry your relationship is so complicated, but I know that you are the perfect person to be his mate. You already basically run your Clan, and you know how to manage your time giving everything equal attention. You may have to delegate more work but that’s what leaders do. How are you and Marcus getting along?” “He is taking more time to focus on the clan and less on his personal life. I am performing my duties as second in command and speaking with Marcus only when I have to. Honestly, I have been thinking about going to the New Orleans house to clear my head and give Marcus and Kodan some space.” I told her. “That could be a fun girls trip if you are interested in some company,” Lilura suggested. “It would, after all this weird paranormal stuff has settled down, I think it would be a good time to go,” I told Lilura. We heard a loud deep growl and froze on the park trail. I looked in the direction of the growl and out from the bushes came a large, dog looking creature. It was larger than a werewolf and was all black with red eyes and huge fangs. Its paws were huge with sharp killing claws. I pulled Lilura behind me and handed her my purse and pulled out the knife that I kept in it. I advanced forward hoping to make the creature focus on me alone and not Lilura. I let my vampiric aura radiate out of me at full strength. I saw the creature twitch at my aura but it stepped forward too and then attacked. Using my vampire speed and strength the creature and I fought. The creature was no match for me, I was experienced in killing many different creature. The fight was over in less than a minute. I was splattered with its blood. Lilura approached with my purse and looked at the dead creature. “What is it?” She asked. “I’m pretty sure it’s a hellhound. Erika had a painting of a one in her home that she showed me.” I told her. “I didn’t know hellhounds existed. I think we should call our first council meeting.” Lilura told me. “I think your right. First I need to call Elise and have her team come clean up this mess.” I said. I called Elise and pulled the hellhound into the bushes while Lilura used her magic to hide the blood from human eyes. I texted Kodan and Lilura called Tyr and we told them to meet us at our chosen council location. A former bank that was now the headquarters of SPS. It was the safest place in the city, the walls were six feet thick with a state-of-the-art security system. Kodan and I put a bunch of money into it to make it perfect for SPS and our Council. The top floor was the council room, the floor below was the SPS offices where the current ten agents worked, with the armory and the capacity for more agents to work in the future. The next floor was part gym and part infirmary. The ground floor had a security office and a fully staffed kitchen and coffee bar lunchroom.
