Chapter 10 Eva -
It was just after noon and Lilura still hadn’t arrived, and Kodan was still at the SPS office. I waited in my living room for both of them to arrive and I looked at the pictures hanging on my living room wall. Marcus had given me all of my son’s paintings, I had high-resolution photos taken of each and had them framed and arranged on my wall. My apartment wasn’t the best place to store paintings, so I gave them back to Marcus to keep in his vault. The two largest pictures were Gawain’s very first portrait and the very last. I had them in the center and arranged all the others around them. I really miss him and having seen a shade of him so recently brought up a lot of feelings. I had not told anyone about how difficult it was for me to see him and they didn’t really ask, they all assumed I was alright because that’s what I portrayed. I had worked through all this pain before I could do it again.
My door opened and Lilura and Kodan come in. I sat up straighter on my couch. Lilura seemed lighter somehow but there was no time to ask. We had other things to worry about. Kodan and Lilura sat down and we discussed our next move.
“What did SPS find?” I asked Kodan.
“We found many matches but without anything else to narrow down what we are looking for it could take us a long time to run down all the women on the list,” Kodan told us.
“So, what should we do instead?” Lilura asked.
“I think we need to stakeout the graveyard. Whoever is doing this clearly has been visiting there and leaving offerings. I have already set up SPS patrols in the neighborhoods surrounding the graveyard and with us set up inside we should be able to catch whoever is doing this.” Kodan said.
“Okay, that sounds like a good plan,” Lilura said.
My phone rang and I looked to see who it was. It was one of the vampires I had tailing Jimmie.
“Hello,” I answered.
“Sorry to disturb you but we have lost Jimmie. We were following him, and he entered a crowd and we were stuck on the other side of the crowd. We didn’t see where he went. We have been searching for an hour already but there are too many humans to find his scent.” My vampire informed me.
I sighed. “Okay, keep looking for him, call for more help. We need to find him.”
“Okay.” The vampire said and hung up.
“What’s wrong?” Kodan asked.
“They lost Jimmie in a crowd. I have them continuing to search. You should alert your team to be on the lookout for Jimmie.” I told Kodan.
“I’ll do that right now. You should both get ready for the stakeout and gear up for potential fighting.” Kodan told us.
“Alright,” I said and took Lilura to my room and we changed into our gear.
“I stepped down from the coven,” Lilura told me out of the blue.
“Oh. How are you doing?” I asked her.
“I feel relieved, with all of this happening I haven’t had time to focus on my coven the way I should. Rita is in charge now.” She told me.
“Wow,” I said.
“Yeah.” She began and Kodan yelled from the living room.
“Are you done changing?” He asked.
We had changed and grabbed our backpacks and went to my living room.
“Yes, let's go,” I said.
The three of us drove to the graveyard and Kodan parked as close to the area of the rift as possible. We stayed in the car and began to watch. It was pretty boring. Kodan received updates from his SPS team every half hour and I received updates from my vampires every hour. They still hadn’t found Jimmie and SPS had killed a few creatures. There was still no sign of whoever was trying to bring Azazel through. It was early evening and an SPS agent dropped off Chinese and blood for dinner. We ate and continued our wait.
I saw movement and pointed it out to Kodan. He pulled out binoculars, it was the groundskeeper moving around. I had a moment of thinking that was strange why would he be working in the evening, but guessed it was because it wasn’t so hot. We continued to watch. When it was dark out we saw movement. Someone in a black cloak with the hood up. The person moved to the alter and we got out of the car and began to approach the figure. The hood dropped and Lilura sucked in a breath of surprise. I recognized this woman too she was part of the coven.
The witch raised her arms and we moved toward her, but she releases her power and creatures began to pour out of the rift, widening it slightly as each creature escaped. I quickly pulled out my phone using my vampiric speed texted my vampires and Erika to get to the graveyard asap. I heard Kodan do the same calling in his SPS team. I thought about calling Aeden but decided to wait to see if we could destroy the horde of creatures first.
