Finally. Finally, the music ended and everyone was told to return to their seats. My boyfriend—Brian, for those keeping track of heartbreak—led her to hers, then came to stand beside me, his grin stretching wide like he hadn’t just publicly humiliated me.
I plucked my third drink from another tray and took a sip.
"How many drinks have you had?" he asked, leaning in close. I wish I could say he smelled bad—like wet dog or shame—but no, he still smelled good. Annoyingly good. Stupid, Perfect, Were-genes.
"Third," I replied, taking a bigger sip. He hated when I drank. Oh well. Life's full of disappointments.
"You need to slow down, Luna. This is an important event."
"And you need to—"
Stella, bless her sharp tongue, was thankfully cut off by the MC climbing the podium, tapping the mic for attention.
“Ladies and gentlemen…”
The room shifted. Something in the air went still.
No. Freaking. Way. There had been rumors—whispers floating around the office halls, buzzing in secret group chats—that he might show. But you know how rumors are… empty, overhyped. I hadn’t let myself believe it. Still, I prayed. Hoped.
This event alone was a lifetime opportunity for someone like me. A human. Working at Top Tier. Being invited was already more than I ever imagined. But this?
The air itself seemed to recognize the shift. Conversations dropped, heads turned, people stood. My heart slammed against my chest.
The MC had barely finished her thought when the crowd fell silent. Every head turned, and I could feel the tension building. It was like the room itself was holding its breath.
Then, the announcement came.
"And now, please welcome the legendary Aurelian Moon."
My heart skipped a beat. I froze, completely unprepared for the reality of seeing him. Aurelian Moon, the Alpha of Alphas, the one rumored to be part of the first werewolves that struck the historic agreement with humans. The man who had stood at the top of everything — and everyone — for centuries.
I could barely make out the whispers from around me. "Is it really him?" "The one they say is ancient?" "Aurelian Moon..."
He was followed by four other men towering over us all, he's tall and lean with his muscles fitting him snugly, all five wearing black suits as they moved in, their presence alone commanding attention. They weren’t just bodyguards; they were his chosen, his inner circle. Their expressions were stoic, and their movements synchronized as if they were extensions of Aurelian himself, a testament to his control and power. Each of them radiated strength, but it was Aurelian’s presence that eclipsed them all.
The crowd parted like water for a king. Aurelian Moon moved through them with such confidence, such control. It was as though the world bent to him, and the air around him crackled with raw power.
My breath caught in my throat. He was... magnificent. Dominant. And he knew it.
This was no longer just a night out. This was history. Maybe this party wasn't all that bad after all.
Everyone and everything stilled till he sat, Then the music resumed,as well as the whispers and murmurs.
"Lord, I'm ready. You can take me now," Stella said, her voice dripping with a playful yet reverent tone. I couldn't help but chuckle, shaking my head in agreement. After such a magnificent sight, everything else seemed to pale in comparison. "Luna," Mr. Gordon suddenly called, his voice pulling me back from the mesmerizing presence of Aurelian Moon. My boss strode confidently towards me, his usual calm demeanor in place. I straightened up instinctively, quickly setting my glass down on the table.
"I forgot my drive in my car, could you...?" He trailed off, eyes expectantly on me.
"Yes, sir, of course," I replied, already reaching for the car keys he'd extended to me. I took them from his hand with a nod, ready to leave the room.
"I'll escort you," Brian said, his voice too eager as he followed me toward the door.
Ugh, no. I could feel the tension building in my chest. The last thing I wanted was to be alone with him, especially after witnessing his intimate dance with Her earlier. It was obvious where his attention had wandered, and I had no intention of indulging him in any further closeness. Not tonight.
I kept my gaze straight ahead, focusing on the exit.
As I unlocked the car and was about to open the door, I suddenly felt a strong pull from behind. His lips descended on mine before I had the chance to react, but I shoved him away immediately, my body seething with anger.
"What?...what's wrong?" Brian asked, looking completely bewildered, as if he couldn't fathom why I wasn't just going along with it.
"What's wrong?! What's wrong?!!" My voice rose with every word, growing louder and more incredulous. "You have her photo as your phone's home screen. You spend long nights with her at work and come home with lipstick stains on your shirt. You dance with her first before me, your girlfriend, holding her intimately and embarrassing me in front of our colleagues! That’s what's wrong!"
I heaved, struggling to catch my breath, every word cutting deeper than I expected. And he had the nerve to look at me like I was the crazy one, like I was overreacting.
"It was just a dance, Luna." His voice was flat, almost dismissive. Just a dance? Really? That was all he got from everything I had just said?
"I'm done, Brian." I spoke the words with finality, each syllable settling heavy in my chest. "I can't do this anymore."
I turned away from him, pressing the car's unlock button, and grabbed the flash drive from the passenger seat, still trembling with a mix of anger and hurt.
"Luna... I—" His voice trailed off, but I didn’t look back.
"Save it," I muttered, cutting him off as I walked away. Flash drive in hand, my heart heavy but resolute. Party pooper.
