I hugged myself, the floral gown I wore brushing softly against my legs. It was a reminder of how small and delicate I felt in this grand place, in this grand life. A knock sounded at the door, light and respectful. "Come in," I called, my voice a little hoarse from the storm of emotions I was barely holding at bay. The door creaked open and a woman in a smart, black uniform entered, wheeling in a cart with an assortment of food. She gave a slight bow before speaking. "Alpha said you might not have eaten well lately, my Lady. He had Chef prepare a selection — whatever you desire." I blinked, momentarily speechless. Even when he wasn’t here, he was still thinking of me. Still taking care of me in ways I didn’t know how to ask for. "Thank you," I managed, my throat tightening slightly.
