Chapter 12: Nightmares

1584 Words
In between the trees and the whistling bristles of the grass, a hushed voice hissed through the wind and the dark rumbles of the gray clouds. Mariana silently crept through the field. The mysterious voice continued to hiss painfully through her ears. The damp smell of grass flooded her nostrils as she crunched onto the blades. Her body vibrated against the chilly wind that ran through her bones. The icy air made the hairs on her arm stand up, shivering. Suddenly, a huge tornado consumed her and held her limbs down. It rained down heavily on her as leaves, twigs, and sticks slapped her face. She cried out in fear but her voice came out as a squeak compared to the boisterous breeze that shrieked and screamed against her ears. It weighed her down and she struggled under its grasp. "You're mine Mariana, all mine!" Mariana let out an ear-piercing scream as she was enveloped with a blanket of darkness. **** Mariana woke up with her heart racing and her mouth full of blood. She spat it out onto the covers as she panted out heavily. The nightmare she had felt too real and too frightening to be fake. She turned around and she was relieved when she saw Micah sleeping on the other bed. She was indeed awake and back safe in her hotel. She got off the bed and went into the bathroom. Her heart raced as she splashed water in her face and stared at her messy reflection. Her curls were all tangled in knots and her eyes were red and watery. Her head was stinging and her legs were wobbly. She leaned on the sink for support as she saw remnants of her dream flash in the mirror. "You're mine!" The voice inside her head cackled at her pitiful state. Tears slid silently down as she was more unable to hold herself and finally let herself go. Her eyes were blurred and the bathroom walls spiraled around slowly. Distant voices echoed and began to grow away fainter... "Come Mariana, come to me..." Her mind followed the voice back into the dream as she slowly started to lose consciousness. Before her body touched the ground, a pair of strong arms grabbed her and pulled her up. "Mariana? Wake up!" The light in her eyes faded and dimmed away... At the back of her mind, two beady red eyes appeared. "Mariana, please wake up!" She finally awakened as water was splattered onto her face. She took in a deep breath as she was back to reality. Her heart was still racing as she was still shaken up, having been pulled out of her living nightmare. "Oh Mariana, your finally awake!" She was suddenly pulled into a hug by Micah who was knelt down on the floor holding her. "What happened?" She muttered softly. "You nearly fainted." "Oh," She made the sound with her mouth like a small pufferfish. "I heard him, Micah..." "What?" "I heard him in my dream..." She tucked in her legs and stared at the ground, with wide eyes as if she just witnessed something, not of this world. "Do you mean Xavier?" "Yeah... I heard his voice." "Really?" "Yeah... he's coming to get me." "What? Oh no..." "Please don't let him take me away," She looked up at him weakly. "Please." Her body was shaking as she was truly afraid of what Xavier will do if he gets his hands on her. "It's okay, he will not get you," He hugged her tightly as her tears dripped down his sleeve. "How about we have breakfast and then we'll go to the out to get some fresh air, how does that sound?" "That sounds good," She snuffed out loud. "We'll just keep out of sight and then forget the whole nightmare, okay?" Mariana sucked in her lips before nodding agreement. "Okay, thanks, Micah." "You're welcome, now let's get you off this floor and have breakfast." "Alright," She wiped her tears away and lifted herself up. They went back to their bedroom and ordered some French toast. It came topped with bananas, strawberries and drizzled with caramel sauce. After that, they got dressed and went out of their hotel room. Mariana was wearing a blue summer dress with white spots, black sandals with flowers, and her red hat. She put on some light blush and a wing eyeliner. Meanwhile, Micah wore a red polo shirt with dark blue jeans. They went outside and just walked around the swimming pool talking. Some people were looking at them but they just had their head down. "So what was your nightmare about?" Micah asked. "I was being held down but the wind when Xavier's voice suddenly boomed out saying that I'm his," She shivered at the memory of those horrific moments. "Did you see him in your dream?" "No, but I heard him..." "Oh wow, that's really weird." "Yeah," Mariana rubbed her head as it was still hurting from the recent nightmare. "Micah." "Yeah?" "What exactly are the effects of the virus?" "Coughing up blood, constipation, hallucinations, and gradually weakening the internal organs, there's more but those are the ones I remember the most." "Mmm alright." This virus was really getting in the way of her life. She just wanted to enjoy the sights of Majorca. "Tell you what, do you want to go to a dinner show later today?" "What's it called?" "It's called Son Amar and it's in Palmanyola but it doesn't start till later this evening." "Okay how about we go shopping for some souvenirs and then we can go there afterward because I really want to get something to remember Majorca." "Okay, we can do that." "Yay!" Mariana leaped in joy as her toes kicked off some tiny stones. When they were finished with their walk, they went out and began exploring the tourist shops. They went into one and brought scented candles, a picture with two butterflies, snow globes, animal keyrings, and some candy. After that, they went around on food exploring their surroundings. They walked on the dirty and sandy rundown path. It eventually led to a big castle that had decaying gray walls to give it that ancient look. They crossed the road to go explore. When they finally got there, they walked up the stairs to the very top and stood next to the edge where it was it's breezy and they could see the whole city of Palma. In front was a wall of trees and further out, there were boats sailing across the deep blue sea and a storm of clouds passing through. Mariana leaned more forward and to see more. Micah lifted her and plopped her down on his shoulders. "Hey, what are you doing?!" She squirmed under his touch as she was quite ticklish. "Just want you to have the best view," He kept a tight hold on her legs as he leaned further out into the scene. Mariana rested against Micah's fuzzy brown hair as she became immersed within the calmness of nature. "This is beautiful Micah, thank you," She hugged her arms tighter around his neck while placing a gently kiss at the back. She laid her head against him, making her curls tickle the side of his face like feathers. When they had enough, Micah carried Mariana back down the steps and out of the castle. **** When the sun began to set, Mariana and Micah began their journey to Palmayola for the theater show. They took a taxi there and sat down on the red chairs along with a long white table. There were waiters around serving the food as the stage darkened in preparation for the show. Sparks of water sprouted up and snaked around the stage. Different flavors of color mixed with the water as they rained down on the people who were in the front seats. Music beautifully strummed by a violin started playing and a person appeared on stage with the large wings of an eagle sprayed out from his sides. Micah pulled Mariana close to him and she snuggled into his chest. Together they watched the beginning and ate the food that was presented. In the middle of the show, when the neon dancers were performing in the consuming darkness, Mariana spotted the same beady red eyes from her nightmare in the corner of the room. She didn't know if it was just her imagination or if they were actually watching her. But one thing was, that the thing in her nightmare was no joke. He was coming to get her, sooner or later.  When the show finally finished, they walked through the avenue of Passeig des Born. The amber streetlights brightened up their path with their warm glow. Small bubbles of light hung down from the trees like mini suns. They sat down at a fountain that had orange stars all around as night time was settling in. "It's such a beautiful night," She murmured. "Yeah, it really is..." He looked up the sky and then back at Mariana who was staring into the distance. The light glazed onto her small round face like a delicious donut. Her glossy cupid-bowed lips curved into a smile that Micah loved seeing. He wanted to keep that smile on her face forever. With that, and her captivating chestnut eyes had him hooked towards her. They say that the eyes to the windows of someone's soul and when he looked into Mariana's, he saw nothing else other than her gentle kind nature which gradually drew his heart towards her every minute they spent. When Mariana suddenly whipped her head towards him, he turned around to not make it obvious that he had been staring at her. His eyes glanced up at a clock and he realized it was getting late. "Come on Mariana, let's go back to our hotel room," He got up and lifted her from the seat with her hand. Together, they walked out of the park and took a taxi to their hotel.
