Micah drove all the way to Kevin's house and quickly got out of the car.
"Micah, what are we doing here?" Mariana asked, trailing behind him.
"We can't go back to my house because some agents are there so we are going to stay at my friend's Kevin house for a bit."
"I'm sorry for causing so much trouble," Mariana covered her face and broke down in tears.
"Hey don't cry, it's okay," He came closer and wiped her tears away. "It's not your fault okay."
"B-But what about your family?" She sniffed and sobbed.
"They'll be okay, they can't get inside the house so they'll be fine."
"Are you sure?"
"I'm sure," He smiled and wiped the remaining of her tears okay.
Mariana sniffed hard before nodding slowly. "Okay then."
Micah took hold of her hand, enveloping his fingers around hers. "Come on, let's go see if my friend Kevin is at home."
Mariana's rosy cheeks rose as she gave him a shy smile followed by a small giggle. "Okay."
They then approached the door and Micah pressed the doorbell. He gave Mariana's hand a little squeeze before they heard footsteps from inside.
The front door soon opened to reveal Kevin's muscular tall stature. He was wearing a dark gray top with black pants. His hair was copper blonde and smoothed over to the side and he had a light beard.
He stared down at them with his ocean-blue eyes full of surprise.
"Hey Micah, what are you doing here?"
"Hey, um, Kevin, this is Mariana. She's the one Xavier told me to look after," He gestured towards her which made Mariana wave to Kevin. "Anyway, the thing is... I'm having a little bit of an issue and we could stay here for a few days?"
"Oh, what's wrong Micah?"
"Um it's a bit of a long story, can I come in and explain it?"
"Okay sure," Kevin stood to the side, letting them walk through.
"Thanks, Kev," Micah tugged Mariana with him as they entered Kevin's house and went into the living room.
Mariana and Micah sat on the black, leather couches, in front of this glass table while Kevin sat on a white chair.
"Are you guys thirsty?" Kevin asked.
"I'm not, what about you Mariana?"
Mariana shook her head silently while relaxing back into the softness, breathing out a heavenly sigh.
"So Micah, what's the matter?"
Micah began explaining their situation to Kevin. Meanwhile, Mariana's eyes were roaming around her surroundings.
She was admiring the freshly painted walls, the pictures of some people that were hanging on the wall, the wide TV screen that was placed on a glass stand, and a table in the middle with a rug underneath.
"Do you have a laptop Kevin?" Micah asked.
"Yeah, it's in my room."
"Can I use it quickly please?"
"Okay, I'll go get it," Kevin got up and rushed upstairs.
"Mariana."
"Yeah?"
"I know this may seem very sudden but would you mind going to one of the Balearic Islands of Spain?"
"Wait what? Did you just say Spain?"
"Yes because if I'm correct, there should be a laboratory there that could make an antidote for the virus."
Oh yeah, I forgot all about that, Mariana thought to herself.
"Are you sure it will work?"
"Well, I have to see if it's still there using Kevin's laptop, and if it is, then yes I am sure it will work."
"Mm okay, if you're sure."
Soon, Kevin came down with his laptop and gave it to Micah. He settled it on his lap and started typing something.
"So Mariana, how are you feeling right now with all that's happening?"
"Honestly, I don't even know. I mean... so many things have happened in such a short space of time and it's all becoming too much..." Mariana wiped her face as upcoming tears started stinging her eyes. Her throat tightened, making it slightly difficult to breathe.
"I'm still shaken up by what Xavier did and he even killed my mother and siblings..." Her words caught got up in her throat as she ducked her head low, her brown curls cascaded down her face.
She covered her mouth and tears of pain cascaded down her cheeks. She tried to silence her tears but couldn't help herself. She felt betrayed and used, and the thought of Xavier's hands all over her unconscious body sent shivers down her spine.
"Hey, I'm sorry if my question was too much," Kevin went over to her and tried to comfort her.
"No, it's okay... it's just that... I didn't expect my life to change so drastically like this, and now I've put Micah's family in danger."
"Mariana don't worry, they are fine. As long as the agents can't get into the gate, they will be okay," Micah butted in while keeping his focus on the screen.
"Yeah but still," Mariana finally looked up with her face drenched in tears. Her soaked cheeks were glowing by the ceiling light. "I still feel responsible though."
Micah looked over at her with a pitiful look. He knew she felt bad for what had happened but as long as his mother didn't let them through, they would be safe. And besides, they wouldn't stay at his house forever and would give up eventually.
He shook his head and continued typing. Once he found what he was looking for, he breathed out a sigh of relief.
"Okay, so I've got good news," He announced while standing up.
"The laboratory where we can find a cure is still active in the island Majorca."
"So I'm guessing we have to go to Majorca then?"
"Yeah, don't worry, it's a very beautiful island. I've been there myself while I was on vacation."
"Oh nice, but how am I going to get there without my passport?"
"Is it in your old house?"
"Yeah."
"Okay, I'll send someone to go get it without Xavier knowing."
"Okay thank you."
Micah places the laptop on the table and stood up. "I've got to go somewhere now but I will be back."
"Okay be careful," Mariana said in a tiny voice.
"I will."
Micah waved bye to them one last time before heading out the door.
"Please be careful Micah," Mariana muttered to herself.
*****
It was now evening and Mariana was laying in the double bed in the spare room Kevin had. She was frowning while fiddling with her fingers. Micah had gone out and she was worried that Xavier might have caught him.
Please be safe Micah...
She kissed her golden necklace while a tear slipped down her eye. She didn't want anything bad to happen to him, especially if it had to do with Xavier.
She sighed as she twirled the necklace around her fingers. She remembered when her mother first got it...
Little Mariana held on to her father and mother's hands as they watched Xavier carefully carve the gold into a heart. He was making his sister's present for her birthday.
"Xavier, how long is this going to take?" Daisy asked.
They were currently waiting for Xavier to finish shaping the gold in his hands. They had been waiting for hours and were getting restless.
"Not long Daisy, just be patient," Xavier replied, quite irritated.
"We've been waiting for ages and plus, you still have to do one for Mariana," Mariana's father said.
"Oh I've already done hers, it's here," He stopped and pulled out a small golden butterfly.
"Oooh, it looks so pretty!" She squealed and took it from his hands. "Thank you!"
"Your welcome Mariana," He patted her on the head before resuming his work.
A loud knock shocked Mariana out of her reverie and back into reality. Her eyes rose up as Micah appeared at the door.
"Hey," He smiled, closing the door behind him.
"Hey!"
"I got your passport all ready and I managed to go home and get some spare clothes."
"Oh wow, so does that mean the agents have left?"
"Yeah but I don't think it's a good idea to go back, just in case."
"Oh okay, I understand."
Mariana continued to admire her necklace while Micah placed her passport down on a table and climbed in next to her. He watched as her hands grazed over her mother's face in the picture.
"Your family is really beautiful," He commented.
"Thank you."
"What were your sibling's names?"
"My sister's name was Lillie and my brother's name was Andrew."
"Oh wow, they are really cute."
"Thanks, even though we weren't blood-related, I still had a very strong bond with them."
"Oh, so you guys aren't biological-"
"No, my parents adopted them when I was fifteen, I wasn't all thrilled at the idea at first but I eventually grew to love them."
"Aw, that's so sweet."
"Yeah..." Mariana smiled at the picture before releasing a sigh.
Micah noticed her sudden change of mood and pulled her into a hug.
"I just miss them so much, it feels like they have been violently ripped away from me," She sniffed and her eyes glossed up with tears.
"I know, I know..." He cuddled Mariana close as she rested her head against his chest.
They stayed like that for a few minutes before Mariana drifted off peacefully into sleep.
Micah carefully leaned her back into the pillow in order not to wake her.
He slowly brushed back some of the curls away from Mariana's face. The look of tranquillity graced her rosy cheeks. The only time where her troubles couldn't bother her was in her dreams.
He really hopes the laboratory in Majorca would be able to help Mariana. She deserved it after all that she's been through.
"Goodnight Mariana," He kissed her forehead and went to sleep.
