Chapter 1 - Secrets beneath the surface

915 Words
The town of Blackwater was always shrouded in an air of quiet mystery, but for Ava Thorn, it was more than just a backdrop. It was a cage. Her jet-black hair that fell in loose waves and piercing blue eyes seemed too intense for the sleepy town, set her apart. Yet, it was the silence of her past that truly isolated her. Ava stood at the edge of the forest, the moonlight filtering through the dense canopy and casting ghostly shadows on the ground. The woods had always intrigued her, their dark depths seeming to whisper secrets she couldn’t quite grasp. She often wondered if they held the answers to the questions she had about her own origins. Or perhaps they were simply a haven from the suffocating mundanity of Blackwater.Tonight, however, was different. Ava was haunted by a series of vivid dreams that had begun just days ago. Each night, she wandered through dark forests bathed in moonlight, with a pair of glowing amber eyes watching her from the shadows. The dreams were so real that she could almost feel the cold earth beneath her feet and the dampness of the night air.As she walked through the forest, her mind replayed the most recent dream. The eyes had been closer this time, their intensity almost palpable. Ava had woken up with a jolt, her heart pounding in her chest. The dreams were more than just unsettling—they felt like a call. She paused by a large oak tree, its gnarled branches reaching out like skeletal fingers. The forest was eerily quiet tonight, and Ava’s senses seemed heightened, as if the forest itself was holding its breath. A chill ran down her spine, but she shook it off. She couldn’t let her fear control her.Ava had always been fiercely independent. The townsfolk often regarded her with a mix of curiosity and suspicion, a result of her aloof demeanor and the unspoken mystery surrounding her. Yet, beneath her calm exterior was a will of iron. She had learned to fend for herself, to rely on her own strength rather than expect anything from anyone.Returning to her small cottage, she was met by Mrs. Elwood, who was waiting for her with a cup of chamomile tea.“Evening, Ava,” Mrs. Elwood greeted, her voice soft but filled with a warm, maternal affection. “You’re out late again. I do hope you weren’t wandering too far.”“I was just taking a walk,” Ava said, taking the cup gratefully. “The forest has a strange pull on me lately. I can’t quite explain it.”Mrs. Elwood’s eyes narrowed with a mix of concern and knowing. “The forest can hold many secrets, child. Not all of them are meant to be uncovered.”Ava sipped her tea, its warmth contrasting with the chill she felt. “I’ve been having these dreams,” she began tentatively. “Dark forests, moonlight, and a pair of amber eyes. They feel so real, like they’re calling to me.”Mrs. Elwood’s expression grew thoughtful. “Dreams can sometimes be reflections of our deepest fears and desires. Or they could be a sign of something more. Have you tried to seek answers from anyone else?”Ava shook her head. “I don’t even know where to start.”Mrs. Elwood reached out, placing a comforting hand on Ava’s. “You’ll find your way, dear. Sometimes the answers we seek are closer than we think.”As Ava pondered Mrs. Elwood’s words, there was a knock on the door. It was Ethan, a local who had been a friend of Ava’s since childhood. He stood there, a sheepish smile on his face and a small bouquet of wildflowers in his hand.“Evening, Ava. Thought you might like these,” Ethan said, his cheeks flushing slightly. Ava accepted the flowers with a warm smile. “Thank you, Ethan. They’re beautiful.”Ethan’s gaze lingered on Ava, his admiration barely hidden. “I was hoping we could talk. I’ve been meaning to ask if you’d like to join me for dinner sometime. I’d love to catch up, and… well, I’ve been thinking about us.”Mrs. Elwood raised an eyebrow but didn’t comment. Ava looked at Ethan, noting the sincerity in his eyes. “I appreciate the offer, Ethan. But right now, I’ve got a lot on my mind.”Ethan’s smile faltered slightly, but he nodded understandingly. “I get it. Well I’m here if you need anything.”As Ethan left, Mrs. Elwood gave Ava a knowing look. “He’s a good young man, Ava. Sometimes, the support of those around us can make a difference, even if we don’t realize it at the time.”Ava sighed, setting the flowers on the table. “I know. It’s just… with everything going on, I’m not sure I’m ready for anything beyond what I can handle right now.”Mrs. Elwood nodded, her eyes soft with understanding. “You’ll find your path, child. And when the time is right, you’ll know.”With that, Ava went to bed, her thoughts still clouded by the dreams and the strange feelings they evoked. The moonlight streamed through the window, bathing the room in a silver glow. Ava closed her eyes, her mind filled with both apprehension and resolve. The answers she sought were out there, hidden in the darkness of the forest, and she would uncover them, no matter the cost.
