Chapter 2 - Cold realities

518 Words
"Another attack this morning, Alpha. Wolves were spotted near our grounds, and a few of our pack members heard a child screaming," Eric's voice came through the mindlink, clipped and urgent. Alex's jaw tightened as he pushed himself out of bed. The cold morning air bit at his skin, a stark contrast to the fire burning in his chest. "Is the child hurt?" he demanded, his tone sharper than he intended. "Nothing serious, just a scratch," Eric replied. "But it could have been worse. We need to strengthen our security border, Alex. The pack’s on edge." Alex paced his room, the wooden floor creaking beneath his heavy steps. “We’ve already increased patrols,” he muttered, frustration evident in his voice. “Yet they’re still getting through. This isn’t just about more guards; it’s about finding out how they’re slipping past us.” “I agree,” Eric’s voice softened, empathy threading through his words. “But we’re running out of options. The pack’s trust in our leadership is waning. If we can’t control this, it might lead to more than just injuries.” Alex clenched his fists, feeling the weight of his responsibility. “We’ll get to the bottom of this,” he said, his voice resolute. “I want a full report on the perimeter breaches by midday. And increase the patrols. I’ll speak to the pack myself to reassure them.” Eric's acknowledgement was quick. “Understood. I’ll get on it right away.” As the mindlink cut off, Alex stared out the window, watching the early morning mist curl around the trees. The peace of the forest seemed a distant memory, overshadowed by the looming threat. His thoughts churned, trying to piece together how their enemies were outsmarting them. The day was just beginning, but it was already filled with too many questions and too few answers. Siana’s eyes flashed with a mix of hurt and defiance. “I thought you might understand. I didn’t come to argue, just to inform you of my decision.” “Understand?” Alex’s gaze turned even colder, his tone dismissive. “You’re leaving the pack, and you think I should be moved by your melodramatic exit? You’ve made your choice. Just don’t expect any sentimentality from me.” Siana’s expression hardened, and she nodded curtly. “I see. Well, I’m sorry if my departure is an inconvenience. I merely wanted to be honest.” “Honesty,” Alex echoed with a bitter edge. “A rare trait in our world. I’ll give you that.” With a final, tense nod, Siana turned and walked away, her shoulders squared as she left the pack’s territory behind. Alex watched her go, feeling a fleeting pang of something he didn’t quite understand, but quickly dismissing it. His world was driven by duty and pragmatism, not by the sentimental whims of fate or romantic notions. As he continued on his path, Alex’s thoughts returned to the pressing concerns of his pack. The threats against them were real and immediate, and he had no time for distractions, be they romantic or otherwise
