Chapter 9 - Unvailing connections

Ava sat at a secluded table in the local library, surrounded by towering shelves of books. The soft glow of the desk lamp illuminated the ancient tome before her, its pages filled with cryptic symbols and fragmented histories. The silver bracelet Gran had given her gleamed softly under the dim lights, a constant reminder of the secrecy surrounding her true nature. She was deeply absorbed in her research, the library’s quiet ambiance perfect for late-night study. However, the more she delved into the texts, the more elusive the answers seemed to become. The sound of footsteps approaching broke the silence. A soft, friendly voice interrupted her thoughts. “Hey, Ava! Mind if I join you?” Startled, Ava looked up to see Jenna standing by the table, a stack of books in hand. “Oh, Jenna. I didn’t expect to see you here.” Jenna set her books down and took a seat across from Ava. “I’m a bit of a bookworm, so this place is like my second home. I noticed you were buried in these old texts and thought I’d see what you’re up to.” Ava hesitated, glancing at her scattered papers and ancient volumes. She was cautious about sharing too much. “Just some family research. It’s pretty complex.” Jenna’s curiosity was evident as she looked over Ava’s materials. “Family research, huh? That sounds intriguing. What kind of family history are you digging into?” Ava bit her lip. “It’s related to my heritage. I’m trying to piece together some old records and symbols. But it’s proving to be more difficult than I expected.” Jenna’s eyes lingered on the symbols. “I’ve seen symbols like that before. It’s not every day you come across such detailed research.” Ava’s heart skipped a beat. “Really? Where have you seen them?” Jenna shrugged. “Just a vague recollection. But those symbols seem tied to something significant.” Ava nodded. “That’s what I’m trying to figure out. The more I dig, the more I feel like I’m missing something.” Jenna leaned in. “Is there something I should know?” Ava’s anxiety heightened. She glanced at Jenna, recalling Gran’s warnings and Darius’s advice about being cautious. “It’s... complicated. I’m trying to keep it under wraps for now.” Jenna’s eyes widened. “Wait, are you into serious research about werewolves?” Ava’s heart raced. “I… well, yes, but—” Before Ava could finish, Jenna’s gaze grew intense. “Ava, you’re a werewolf, aren’t you?” she whispered. Ava froze. “I… I mean, yes, but—” Jenna’s face softened. “I didn’t mean to pry. I sensed something, but I couldn’t place it.” Ava took a deep breath. “Yes, I am. Gran gave me a bracelet to help hide my true nature.” Jenna’s eyes widened in understanding. “That makes sense. Those protective charms are quite effective. But you don’t need to worry about me. I’m not here to cause any trouble.” Ava’s apprehension eased slightly. “Thank you for understanding.” Jenna smiled warmly. “Of course. Gran and I have dealt with a lot together. If you need help with your research or anything else, I’m here.” Ava felt relief. “I appreciate that. It’s been overwhelming, and I’m not sure who to turn to.” Jenna nodded. “You’re not alone in this. There are others who can help.” Ava’s curiosity grew. “So, how did you come to know Gran?” Jenna’s eyes brightened. “Gran has been a mentor to me for years. She helped me when I was a pup learning about my abilities.” Ava’s interest was piqued. “It sounds like she’s been a significant influence in your life.” Jenna nodded. “Absolutely. Gran’s guidance has been invaluable.” Ava nodded, feeling a newfound sense of trust. “Maybe you can help me make sense of these symbols and records. I feel like I’m missing something important.” Jenna smiled. “I’d be happy to help. And if you need a break, I’m always up for a chat or coffee.” As Jenna packed up, Ava felt a mix of relief and apprehension. With Jenna’s support, she felt more prepared to face her research’s challenges. A few days later, as Ava was absorbed in her studies, Gran entered the room with a warm smile. “Ava, I’ve invited Jenna over for coffee,” Gran announced. Ava looked up, tired. “Jenna’s coming over?” “Yes,” Gran said. “She mentioned wanting to visit and thought it would be nice if you joined us. It’s important to take breaks.” Ava sighed. “Alright, a break sounds good.” Later, Jenna arrived with a bright smile and a box of pastries. She greeted Gran warmly and turned to Ava. “Hi, Ava! I’m glad to see you.” “Hi, Jenna,” Ava replied, offering a polite smile. As they settled with coffee and pastries, Jenna picked up on Ava’s exhaustion. “I hear you’ve been working hard on your research. How’s it going?” “It’s... complicated,” Ava admitted. “I’ve hit a few dead ends, but I’m making progress.” Jenna nodded sympathetically. “A break can be good for clearing your head. Gran told me you’ve been immersed in it.” Gran poured coffee and placed it before them. “I thought some company and conversation might be just what you need.” Jenna took a sip, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. “Actually, Ava, I wanted to invite you to a girl’s night out tonight. It’s a gathering of local werewolves. It might be a great way to meet others and unwind.” Ava hesitated. “A girl’s night? I don’t know...” “It’s just a casual get-together,” Jenna assured her. “It’ll be a good chance to socialize with more of our kind” Gran added with a reassuring smile, “It’s important to connect with others in the pack.” Ava thought about it and nodded. “Alright, I’ll come. When is it?” “Tonight,” Jenna said enthusiastically. “We’re meeting at a lounge downtown at seven. I promise it’ll be a lot of fun.” As evening approached, Jenna and Ava arrived at the lounge, a lively place filled with chatter and music. Jenna led Ava to a reserved area where a group of women were mingling. Among them was Roxy, engaged in conversation with a few other pack members. Jenna introduced Ava. “Everyone, this is Ava." Roxy glanced up and smiled warmly. “Hi, Ava. Nice to meet you.” “Nice to meet you too, Roxy,” Ava replied, trying to seem at ease. Jenna turned the conversation towards Roxy. “Roxy’s been navigating some interesting personal situations lately. It’s a bit of a journey.” Ava, feeling out of place, attempted to engage. “What do you mean by interesting?” Roxy shrugged. “Relationships can be complicated. Sometimes you end up in situations that are more about practical considerations than what you originally expected.” Jenna’s eyes lit up. “For instance, Roxy’s been involved in a chosen mate situation. It’s one way to find a partner, but it’s not the same as having a true mate.” Ava looked curious. “What’s the difference between a chosen mate and a true mate?” Jenna’s expression grew animated. “A chosen mate is someone you end up with due to circumstances, choices, or practical reasons. It’s more about compatibility. A true mate is someone you’re destined to be with. It’s a profound, almost magical connection. It’s rare but supposed to be perfect.” Ava furrowed her brow. “So, a true mate is about destiny, while a chosen mate is about practicality?” Jenna nodded enthusiastically. “Exactly. A true mate is a fated connection. It’s not something you can plan or predict. It’s meant to be a perfect match on a deeper level.” Roxy, listening quietly, added, “It’s a lot to process. I’m still figuring things out. Sometimes it feels like a constant balancing act.” Jenna glanced at Roxy with a teasing look. “Roxy’s been in this chosen mate situation for a while. It’s one of those things where you never really know how it will turn out.” Ava, noticing Jenna’s playful eye roll, felt amusement. “Is it difficult navigating a chosen mate situation?” Roxy sighed. “It can be. Expectations and realities don’t always align with what you want or feel.” Jenna interrupted with a light-hearted tone. “And sometimes you get caught up in it all, just like Roxy here.” Ava listened, intrigued but still feeling slightly on the outside. “So, what’s it like in a true mate situation? Is it as magical as it sounds?” Jenna leaned in with a smile. “It’s supposed to be an incredible connection. You’re meant to be together in a way that feels almost destined. It’s a rare and profound bond.” Roxy’s gaze shifted towards Jenna. “And how do you deal with all the expectations from others?” Jenna shrugged. “It’s about balancing your desires with what’s expected. Sometimes it’s challenging, but you find a way to make it work.” As the evening continued, Ava observed the dynamic between Jenna and Roxy. It was clear Jenna was more connected to Roxy, while Ava remained somewhat on the periphery.
