The pram was still in the dining room and as Phoenix began to show signs of wanting a nap, Hana laid her in it. She pushed her down to the mud room to retrieve the boots she had left there the day before. It was damp outside, but she thought her child might appreciate some fresh air. The thought of returning to the bedroom filled with angry adults made her squirm. The walls of the mud room were lined with shelves containing boots and shoes, odd bits of outdoor clothing and a rack mounted a foot from the ceiling where hats were stored. Hana’s Jillaroo hat should have been there and she raked the shelves with her eyes looking for it. It was brown leather with a flat top and a decent brim. A plaited leather tie ran around the brim and she loved that Logan gave it to her after Miriam’s death;
