“I think we’ve all been bracing for this since we got back from Lthiam,” Nate said. His heavy sigh sent bubbles drifting out of the tub, and I smiled as Shadow, our black cat, dove after them. Her brother, Light, glanced down at her from the countertop by the sink, then continued cleaning his paw with perfect dignity. Nate lay between my legs, his back to my chest, and I slid my hands over his shoulders and down his chest under the water and bubbles. I let out a sigh of my own. He was warm and heavy and the room smelled like exotic flowers from our bubble mixture. It was a perfect moment, but the impending split hung over us like a rain cloud on a summer day. “We had a good run,” Nate said.
