STORM Within

Olivia’s heart jumped as she looked up, eyes wide and searching. “Who’s there?” she gasped, still holding Lily close. A shadow moved closer, but Olivia couldn’t see the face clearly. Her mind raced—was it a doctor? A stranger? Or someone else? “Marcus?” Her voice cracked, barely a whisper. The man’s face came into focus, and tears welled up in Olivia’s eyes. It was him. Marcus. Her husband. The man who should have been there all along. “Marcus, I don’t understand... I don’t know what happened. Lily—she just… she started shaking, and then—” Her sobs broke free, tears streaming uncontrollably down her cheeks. Her body trembled as years of hurt and desperation poured out in a flood of emotion. Marcus dropped to his knees beside her, his face pale and eyes wide with fear. His hand trembled as he pulled out his phone. “We need to get her to the hospital, now,” he said urgently, voice tight with worry. Olivia nodded, clutching Lily close, her tears soaking into the small blanket as hope and dread twisted inside her. Marcus didn’t waste another second. He gently but urgently scooped Lily into his arms, her tiny body limp against his chest. Her lips were turning pale, and her breaths came in short, shaky gasps. “Olivia—get the car keys!” he barked, his voice shaking. “Now!” Snapping out of her daze, Olivia stumbled to her feet, nearly tripping over the rug as she fumbled through her bag. Her hands trembled so hard she dropped the keys twice before gripping them tight. “Which hospital?” she asked breathlessly, already bolting toward the door. “St. Mercy’s!” Marcus shouted behind her, already halfway down the hallway with Lily. “It’s the closest—go!” The cold night air hit them like a slap. Olivia’s breath came in gasps as she unlocked the car, throwing the door open. Marcus slid into the backseat, holding Lily close, whispering her name over and over, trying to keep her awake. “Drive, Liv! Just go!” The tires screeched as Olivia sped off into the night, her vision blurring with tears. Marcus was already running, Lily’s small, limp body held tightly to his chest. Olivia chased after them, soaked to the bone, her arms aching to hold her daughter again. “Marcus! Is she breathing?!” she shouted over the roar of the storm. "Marcus didn’t answer. His eyes stayed fixed on Lily’s face wide, terrified, and silent."
