Colin had spent most of the day drinking. He had started at opening time, and then moved from pub to pub, avoiding the Smuggler’s Arms after his embarrassing incident with Martha the previous night. From the pub, he had moved to the beach where there were several stalls which sold beer and cider, along with ice cream, flip-flops and suntan lotion. He grabbed himself a deckchair and lay in the sun, knocking back his latest can. Lunch was a kebab from one of his favourite vendors, where the price was low, and the meat piled high.
