Devins POV
As I drove my car back to Erins' place I mind-linked to our alpha James.
"Hey, you got a moment?"
"Yeah, sure. Lizzy is in a meeting with my mother," James responded in that happy tone he almost always had since finding his mate.
"I have some news I defiantly should have told you about immediately but the news is one day late instead. Hopefully you will understand once I have told you everything. I understand I am likely to face a reprimand. I would also like to add Holt to the link."
"That sounds serious. Does it have to do with Holt being asked to get you a consultant job?"
"Yes."
"Hello?" Holt joined the conversation.
"Devin was just about to tell us about why he had you get the consultant gig," James responded.
"OK, yesterday while chasing the fairy, I was taken out of the hunt not by the fairy but by a witch. A witch who has been living on our Packlands her entire life. According to her, she was adopted as a baby and has never come in contact with another witch her entire life. She has and uses magic but does not appear to be in control of it. I would like you, Holt, to confirm all this."
"Sure, name and address?"
"Erin Harolds, 12 Pinestreet."
"This is a very big deal. Why did you not inform us immediately?" James asked.
"The first and main reason my actions have not been as normal is that Wisdom identified her as our mate and I nearly marked her within minutes of meeting her. The second reason is that if her story is true, then I believe she is most likely in very great danger. What possible reason could her family have for abandoning her on pack lands, away from all witches, and masking her magical trademark so her kin can't sense and/or find her. Wisdom is very scared she will be banished if found. So we have been following her all day. She works with humans and acts human. She does not even defend herself with magic against humans. Then again, I don't know to what degree she could have used magic to change my memories or reactions. I have searched for any reference of a witch faking a matebond with a wolf and found nothing. I also have found no references to a wolf and a witch ever being mates."
"Do you have eyes on her now?"
"Yes, she is driving in front of me. She has agreed to rent a room in her house until Christmas. I would like us to take this time to assess and try to figure out her story and hold off on any sentences until after Christmas."
"I can make no such promise. What I can say is that as long as the threat from her does not increase and all her information checks out, then we can wait. But if I find evidence she is here to cause problems, then I will bring her in for questioning. I would also like to warn you that marking her before the deadline will result in banishment from the pack for both of you," James said.
"That is fair. No hasty moves of either marking or harming her. We have until Christmas to investigate. I will be with her as eyes making sure she does not bring trouble to our lands."
"I want at least one report of day, and I want Holt to receive as many bits of provable facts about her as possible to start solving the mystery of the witch."
We disconnected and I was glad. This was as much as I could have hoped for. It was really lucky that James had found his mate. I think it helped him understand what I was going through and also put him in a better mood. It also helped what I had most likely saved his life a few months back.
After talking to them, I called up Lina, an economics superpowered werewolf. That girl could read numbers better than anyone I had ever met. She does all my investing now and let's just say we are having no problems beating the market.
"Hey Lina, I have a favor to ask?"
"Yeah sure, what is it?"
"I am sending you the financial results of a company I'm consulting with. To me it does not seem like the numbers are adding up. Could you give me your analysis and opinion?"
"Of course, Devin. No problem. It sounds like fun."
"Thank you, you rule!"
"Indeed, I do, as the Luna of the Bonecrusher Pack."
We hung up. I felt a lot better after interacting with my pack-mates about the situation. But now the difficult part was coming. Erin did not need any magic to get me into her bed. But she had the magic working to make me lose control. Something I very much wanted to do. I wanted to kiss her again. To hear the little moans she makes. I wanted to feel if her skin was as soft as it looked. I wanted to spend days with her, touching her in every way my brain could think of. And it could think of many. But I could not mark her. Going rouge could mean the death of her. It was best to not even touch her. It would be too hard to resist marking her if I joined her in bed.
