Prologue

Janet’s dark curls were bound in a tight pony tail as she ran. She ran straight down the corridor and ducked behind a statue when she saw a guard approaching. Thank the goddess her five brothers had insisted on training her. She could kick ass and be sneaky enough to pass by a werewolf without being detected. Janet only hoped her skill worked against a werewolf that was a member of the royal guard. Her mate’s royal guard to be exact… Once the coast was clear, she breathed a sigh of relief and shot towards the window on the other side. She was blowing this popsicle stand. No way would she stay here! Expertly, she jumped over the window ledge and landed on her feet in the courtyard of the palace. Her hair came undone and flew wildly around her face as she crouched low, her hands touching the ground and chafing against the stone tiles. Now all she had to do was shift and- “I see you decided to go for a walk,” came a teasing voice. Janet turned to look at the familiar voice with narrowed eyes. His sharp features, defined jaw and forest green eyes obscured by shadows made her want to slap him. Or kiss him. Or maybe both. Her mate. She hated him with a vengeance. How had she not smelled him nearby? Janet’s eyes narrowed, guess he knew a few tricks too. “Now, are we going to do this the hard way…or are you going to be a good girl and go on back to your room?” Nick asked crisply, moving away from the wall he’d been leaning against and coming out of the shadows. Janet’s eyes glowed yellow and she let out a snarl. Her clothes ripped as she shifted into her wolf. Nick Clayton, King of the werewolves residing within the Commonwealth, took a minute to admire the beauty of her solid black wolf. She snapped at him violently and Nick was reminded briefly of a dark storm cloud right before thunder struck. She had the temper of one too, Nick couldn’t help but note as he watched her wolf snarl at him, baring sharp canines ready to kill. Nick sighed. “The hard way I guess,” Nick said wearily and shifted into his own wolf within the blink of an eye. Janet was stunned momentarily by his size. He was a full-grown alpha wolf and towered over her. And his wolf was a beautiful sandy gold. For a moment, she thought they’d look good together. Her wolf was purring at the thought. But her wolf didn’t find him attractive enough to forgive ten years of neglect. No, both human and wolf were on the same page when it came to making sure Nick paid for what he’d done. Janet snarled and jumped, ready to put her training to good use. She bared her canines, aiming for his jugular. She wouldn’t kill him but she’d definitely do enough harm to slow him down so she could get out of here!
