The forest erupted with chaos. Whispers turned into shrieks, shadows clawed at the ground, and the blood moon pulsed above like a living heart.
Selene’s fingers tightened around Eryon’s hand. Her fear was overwhelming, but beneath it was something stronger — a strange, unshakable trust in him.
Eryon’s voice was firm. “Stay behind me.”
He moved with inhuman speed, his silver hair catching the crimson glow as he raised his hand. The air rippled, and the shadows recoiled as though struck by an invisible force.
Selene gasped. “What are they?”
Eryon’s eyes darkened. “Hunters. Creatures bound to destroy bonds like ours before they awaken fully. If they succeed, you’ll forget me… as if I never existed.”
Her chest ached at the thought. The bond was only minutes old, and yet the idea of losing him already felt unbearable.
One of the creatures lunged, its twisted limbs stretching unnaturally. Selene stumbled back, but Eryon moved faster — his hand slicing through the air. A wave of energy burst outward, scattering the shadows like smoke.
But they re-formed instantly, hissing and circling closer.
Selene’s voice trembled. “You can’t fight them all.”
Eryon’s jaw clenched. “Then run.”
But Selene shook her head, her voice steady despite her fear. “No. I won’t leave you.”
For a moment, Eryon’s gaze softened — as if her words had pierced through the sorrow weighing on him. But then his expression hardened again.
“Then hold on to me. And whatever happens, don’t let go.
He pulled her close, and the air shimmered around them. A rush of wind swept through the forest as the ground beneath their feet shifted.
Selene’s stomach lurched — the world around them blurred, colors twisting into streaks of light and shadow. And then, just as suddenly, it stopped.
They stood at the edge of a cliff overlooking a silver lake, its waters glowing faintly under the eclipse. The hunters’ whispers were gone, though the air was still heavy with dread.
Selene staggered, catching her breath. “What… what just happened?”
Eryon’s voice was low. “I pulled us through the veil. A place between worlds. It won’t hold them for long.”
Selene’s mind swirled with questions, but one burned brighter than all the rest. “Why me? Why are we bonded?”
Eryon turned, his midnight-blue eyes glowing faintly. “Because fate has chosen you. Every eclipse, one mortal is bound to me. Your mother… she was chosen too.”
Selene’s breath caught. “My mother? Then… what happened to her?”
Pain flickered across his face. “She loved me. And I loved her. But the bond… it was broken.”
Her heart raced. “Broken how?”
His voice cracked. “She chose to let go.”
Silence fell between them, heavy and suffocating. Selene touched the locket around her neck, the only piece of her mother she had left. Had her mother really chosen to abandon him? To abandon destiny?
But then Selene’s thoughts shifted. If her mother had let go, why had she disappeared.
Eryon stepped closer, his presence both calming and overwhelming. “Selene… the bond between us is dangerous. The hunters will never stop. And when the blood moon fades, so will I. If you hold on… your life will never be the same.”
Selene looked into his eyes, her pulse quickening. She didn’t understand the bond fully — but she felt it. Deep in her soul, as if they had known each other across lifetimes.
“I don’t care,” she whispered. “I’d rather fight for one night with you… than live a lifetime never knowing.”
For the first time, Eryon’s lips curved into a real smile. A rare, fleeting glimpse of hope.
But before he could speak, the air around them rippled. The whispers returned. The hunters had found them.
The lake’s surface rippled violently, shadows rising from its depths. Eryon pulled Selene behind him, his energy flaring again — but his movements were slower now, weaker.
Selene’s heart clenched. “You’re hurt.”
He shook his head. “Not me. The eclipse. Its power fades with every passing moment.”
The shadows surged forward, surrounding them. Eryon’s strength faltered, his knees nearly buckling. The hunters hissed, their hollow eyes fixed on Selene.
“Let go,” Eryon gasped, his voice breaking. “If you release the bond now, they’ll leave you alone. You’ll forget me. You’ll be safe.”
Tears burned in her eyes. “Is that what you want?”
He looked at her with a mix of anguish and longing. “It doesn’t matter what I want. It matters if you survive.”
The hunters closed in, their whispers growing louder, chanting her name. Selene’s chest tightened, fear battling with the strange, overwhelming love she felt.
Her hand tightened around Eryon’s. Her voice shook, but her resolve was clear.
“No. I won’t let go.”
The shadows shrieked in fury, the lake erupting into chaos. Eryon’s eyes widened, a mixture of fear… and something else.
“Then destiny has claimed you,” he whispered.
The blood moon pulsed violently overhead — and everything went dark.
