Chapter 16: The Hollow Thread

304 Words
The Cartographer’s tower, once a beacon of strange comfort, now felt like a ruin abandoned by time. Dust swirled through slanted beams of fading light. Scrolls littered the floor like fallen leaves, their once-glowing runes now dull and cracked. Shelves stood crooked. Bottles of starlight had dimmed. Something ancient had been disturbed. Mira stepped carefully over broken compass parts and shattered crystal lenses, feeling the weight of magic that had gone silent. “She wouldn’t have left this way,” she whispered. “Not without a reason.” Thistle sniffed the air. “The silence here isn’t empty. It’s watching.” Cael moved to the far wall, where a tattered tapestry had fallen. Behind it, hidden in a niche, was a half-burned journal page, still warm to the touch. Mira reached for it, heart racing. > “The Mirrorborn seek what Mira fears most—not the shadow, but the truth behind it. If they reach the Hollow Thread, they will unravel the root, not just the bloom. She must not face them alone.” “The Hollow Thread…” Mira whispered the name like it might shatter. “It’s not just a path,” Cael said softly. “It’s you. The connection between memory and magic. If they touch it, they can rewrite everything you’ve healed—twist your story into theirs.” Mira closed her eyes. A strange warmth stirred in her chest, like a current of golden light coiled deep inside her, fragile but burning. She understood now. The Hollow Thread wasn’t a thing to be found—it was the part of her that bound her worlds together. “We have to find them,” she said, her voice hardening. “Before they find me.” And from the cracked floor, something pulsed once—like a heart. Watching. Waiting.
