Chapter 6: The Second Gate

The air trembled. The shadow-door hung in the air like a wound in reality, pulsing with an eerie, low hum. Mira’s heart pounded. Behind her, the map in her hand flared with heat, ink running wild across the page. “Close it,” Thistle hissed. “Before it finishes opening.” “I can’t,” Mira whispered. “I don’t know how.” The boy stood calmly, watching them. “You can’t stop it. Not yet. Not without the Key of Echoes.” Thistle’s ears twitched. “That key was lost in the Sundering.” “Not lost,” said the boy. “Just hidden.” Mira stepped closer. “Why are you doing this?” “Because I saw the truth,” the boy said, eyes dark. “The worlds were never meant to be separate. The mirror lied. And the shadows… they showed me what was stolen from us.” His voice was full of pain, but there was something else behind it—something broken. “What’s your name?” Mira asked gently. The boy blinked. “Cael.” She held out her hand. “Cael, come with us. You don’t have to do this.” For a moment, his eyes flickered—not shadow, but memory. Then the shadow-door shuddered. A clawed hand reached through. Thistle leapt forward, barking an incantation. A burst of golden flame struck the hand, forcing it back. The door quaked. Mira’s map burned her fingers. New words scorched across the parchment: Find the Key. Trust the Echo. Cael turned away. “You don’t understand, Mira. But you will.” With a snap of his fingers, he vanished into the gate. The door slammed shut behind him. Silence fell. “We’re too late,” Thistle said. “No,” Mira murmured, staring at her map. “We’re just getting started.”
