Episode five

I took a deep breath, trying to sort through my emotions. It wasn’t a decision I could make lightly, but I had to admit that the more I thought about it, the more it seemed like the only option left. “Yeah. I thought about it,” I said, glancing down at my coffee cup. “And I’m considering it.” Mia’s eyes widened. “Wait… you’re actually going to marry him?” I hesitated. “It’s not a real marriage, Mia. Just a contract. It solves both our problems. A year of my life to get financial stability and save the studio.” “Wow. I never thought you’d be the one to take the easy way out.” Mia’s voice was a mix of disbelief and concern. “You know it’s not that simple, right?” “I know it’s not,” I said quietly, “but what other choice do I have? I’m running out of time.” She looked at me, her expression softening. “Just be careful, okay? You don’t know what kind of man he is behind the suit and the business deals.” “I know,” I replied, my voice barely above a whisper. “I don’t know what he wants, or if I can trust him. But right now, I don’t have a lot of options.” The silence stretched between us, heavy with unspoken words. Mia didn’t say anything else, but I could tell she was worried. So was I. The ink on the contract dried in the dimly lit office, the weight of the decision settling on my shoulders. It was done. I had agreed to marry Damien Sinclair—not out of love, but out of necessity. I would get the financial support I desperately needed for my studio, and he would get the appearance of a stable relationship to satisfy his grandmother and the board. Damien slid the signed document across the table to me with a faint smirk. “It’s official,” he said, his voice calm but his eyes sharp with an intensity that hadn’t left since that first moment we met. I nodded, feeling the paper between my fingers, the finality of it all. “Now what?” “Now, we meet my grandmother,” he replied, standing up and offering me a hand. “It’s time for you to meet Elyano Sinclair, and we’ll tell her you’re my girlfriend…soon-to-be fiancée.” I swallowed the knot in my throat. There was no turning back. The drive to his grandmother’s estate was quiet, the weight of the contract hanging between them like a heavy cloud. Damien had told her the plan, but even now, seeing her so unsure, he felt a flicker of doubt. It wasn’t about their arrangement—it was about how much he had underestimated her. He glanced at Sienna, her gaze fixed outside the car window. She was still processing it all, but the fire in her eyes hadn’t dimmed. She was stronger than he thought. When they arrived, his grandmother was already waiting for them. Elyano Sinclair was the matriarch of the family, elegant, commanding, and sharp as a tack. She looked every bit the woman who had built Sinclair Enterprises from the ground up. “Damien,” she said, standing to greet them with a warm smile. “And you must be the lovely young woman I’ve heard so much about.” Sienna smiled politely, extending her hand. “I’m Sienna.” Damien placed a hand on her back as they approached. “Grandma, this is Sienna—my girlfriend…soon-to-be fiancée.” The words felt strange coming out of his mouth, but they had to be said. Grandma’s eyes lit up with genuine delight. “Well, it’s about time!” Elyano said with a laugh, pulling Sienna into a warm hug. “I’m thrilled to meet you, dear. And if you’re soon-to-be fiancée, we’ll need to get started on wedding preparations. Don’t you think, Damien?” Damien gave a tight smile, nodding. “Of course, Grandma.” Sienna glanced at him, her brow furrowing slightly at the way everything was moving so quickly. She hadn’t expected the full-on embrace of the Sinclair family life. The press was already buzzing outside the estate, and it was clear that this was not just a family affair—it was an event. A spectacle. Elyano began to chatter about venues and caterers as if they were already in the midst of wedding planning, pulling Sienna further into the whirlwind that was the Sinclair family. Damien and I were quickly swept into the chaos of wedding preparations. I tried to stay focused on the task at hand—keeping up with the act. This was a marriage of convenience, after all. But the deeper I got into the Sinclair world, the harder it became to remember that. Damien’s grandmother was genuine in her excitement, and the whole thing felt… real. Damien stayed by my side, his presence unwavering. He was a quiet observer, letting his grandmother take charge while he watched me closely. As the night wore on, I couldn’t help but feel like I was slipping further into a role I had never imagined playing. A fiancée. A wife. It was surreal. Damien knew this wasn’t going to be easy. He had chosen to move fast, get everything in place, but he was beginning to see the cracks in their perfect little contract. Sienna wasn’t a fool—she saw through it. She knew what this marriage was, but for how long could she pretend? Tonight, as they mingled with the guests, their eyes met across the room. Sienna was standing with his grandmother, laughing at something his grandma had said, but there was a distance between them. The contract was signed, but the emotion… that wasn’t there yet. Maybe it never would be. For now, he had to stay focused on the bigger picture. The company. The marriage. His reputation. Sienna was here for a reason. But the more time he spent with her, the more he realized how complicated everything had become. For the first time in a long time, Damien felt unsure.
