Chapter 3: The Alpha's Gaze

1599 Words
The next morning, pale sunlight filtered through the trees around our small cabin, but it did nothing to loosen the tight knot in my stomach. Today was my first day at Blackwood Pack Academy. Because I had already turned eighteen, the elders placed me straight into the Senior year—the toughest one. This was the year wolves fought to lock in their ranks, built warrior alliances, and hunted for their fated mates. I was stepping into that world with no claws, no wolf, and no defense. I stood in front of the cracked bathroom mirror and pulled an oversized black hoodie over my head. The sleeves swallowed my hands. Good. I wanted to disappear. But when I looked at my reflection, a frustrated sigh slipped out. Nature had played a mean trick on me. My skin glowed smooth and pale like porcelain. Thick, dark waves of hair fell past my shoulders. My eyes—deep violet-gray with thick lashes—stared back at me. In a pack full of fierce wolves who used sharp smiles and strong scents to draw mates, I looked soft and human. Beautiful in a way that made people stop and stare. And that beauty would only make things harder. I grabbed my bag and walked with my head down toward the academy. The stone building rose like an old fortress, heavy and watchful. The courtyard smelled of leather, fresh sweat, and the sharp edge of teenage energy. Groups of strong students wrestled on the grass, laughed loudly, and showed off by tossing each other around with easy power. The moment I stepped through the iron gates, silence fell like a heavy blanket. Heads turned. Noses lifted. Male wolves paused mid-step, confusion flashing across their faces. I looked like I belonged on a magazine cover, but I smelled like nothing—no wolf scent, no rank, no power. "Well, well. What do we have here?" A sugary-sweet voice sliced through the quiet. The crowd parted. Three girls walked forward. The one in front moved like she owned the ground beneath her feet. Blonde hair shone under the sun. Piercing amber eyes locked on me. She wore a fitted leather jacket that probably cost more than our new cabin. Tanya. She stopped a few feet away and looked me up and down. For a second, pure jealousy twisted her pretty face. Then she caught my scent—or the total lack of one. A cruel smile spread slowly across her lips. "A wolf-less stray," she announced loudly so everyone could hear. "And the daughter of those two weak outcasts who crawled back yesterday. Look at her… completely defenseless." Laughter burst out around us. Tanya tilted her head, eyes sparkling with delight. I was the perfect target—pretty enough to threaten her spot, weak enough to crush easily. Before she could step closer, the loud school bell rang across the stone walls. Tanya shot me one last sharp glare. "Watch your back, human. This isn't the city. Weak things get eaten alive here." I swallowed the anger burning in my throat and hurried inside, keeping my eyes on the floor. My fingers shook as I twisted the rusty locker handle. "Psst! Aria!" A quick whisper came from behind me. I spun around, back hitting the locker, and found a petite girl with wide copper eyes and messy brown curls. "You remember me?" she breathed, glancing around nervously before tugging me into a quiet spot under the stairwell. "It's me—from the woods yesterday. I'm Tiffany." My eyes widened. "Tiffany! Are you okay? Did those boys hurt you?" "No, because of you!" She grabbed my hands. Her eyes shone with real thanks. "You risked everything to save me. No one has ever done that before. Thank you, Aria. I mean it." Warm relief spread through my chest. "I couldn't just stand there and watch." Tiffany's face grew serious. "You definitely poked a hornet's nest. Since you're new, let me help you. You need to know who's who if you want to survive Senior year." For the next ten minutes, she spoke fast and low, giving me the full picture. "That blonde who cornered you? Tanya," she whispered, nodding toward the cafeteria. "Her dad is Elder Marcus—one of the most powerful wolves on the council. She acts like the whole school belongs to her. Chloe and Megan are her shadows. They do whatever she says." Tiffany pointed toward a bench by the windows. "And over there—see those two?" My stomach dropped. The twins from the woods sat tossing a heavy football back and forth with superhuman speed. Up close they looked exactly alike—same broad shoulders, same smug grins. "Max and Alex," Tiffany said with a small shiver. "Their father is the Head Gamma, the top warrior. They get away with everything. They love picking on low-ranking wolves like me, and they're happy to do Tanya's dirty work." As if they felt our eyes, the twins looked up. When they spotted me, their amber eyes lit with mean amusement. Alex gave a mocking little wave. "They're bad news," Tiffany warned, pulling me farther away. "But we can stick together. I'm a low-ranking omega. You're… you. We'll watch each other's backs." A real smile broke across my face—the first one in weeks. "I'd like that, Tiffany." By the end of the first week, Tiffany and I were inseparable. We found quiet corners to eat lunch on the hidden rooftop. We laughed over silly human jokes that had nothing to do with pack ranks. In a school full of sharp teeth and constant power games, we carved out a small, safe space for ourselves. Tanya refused to let us have even that. Every day brought something new. She tripped Tiffany in the crowded hallways. She knocked my books to the floor and watched me pick them up. She and her friends scratched cruel words into our lockers with wolf claws. Max and Alex always lingered nearby, laughing under their breath or using their speed to suddenly appear behind us just to make us jump. By Friday afternoon, everything boiled over. Tiffany and I walked down the grand main hallway after the last class, arms full of heavy history projects. A foot shot out from the crowd. Tiffany cried out as she hit the polished floor. Papers flew everywhere, scattering across the tiles. "Oh look. The clumsy omega dropped her trash," Tanya laughed, stepping forward with Chloe and Megan right beside her. Students stopped to watch, forming a tight circle. "Pick it up, Tiffany," Tanya ordered, voice dripping with dominance. "And while you're down there, clean my shoes." "Leave her alone, Tanya." I stepped in front of my friend. My voice rang clear through the hallway. I stared straight into her eyes, violet-gray meeting amber, refusing to look away. "Or what, human?" Tanya sneered. She leaned in close until I could smell her expensive perfume. Her hand rose. Long manicured nails lengthened into sharp, deadly claws. "You going to bite me? Oh wait—you can't." The crowd gasped. Max and Alex leaned against the lockers, smirking, waiting for blood. I braced myself, muscles tight, ready to fight with nothing but my bare hands— A heavy, freezing weight suddenly dropped over the entire hallway. All sound died. The air turned ice-cold. Every werewolf around us gasped and trembled. Knees buckled. Tanya's clawed hand froze in mid-air. Her arrogant smile vanished, replaced by raw terror. Thud. Thud. Thud. Heavy footsteps echoed. The crowd parted like water, heads dropping in total submission. A tall figure walked down the center of the hallway. He stood taller than everyone else. Broad shoulders and powerful muscles moved with the smooth grace of an apex predator. Jet-black hair framed a sharp, angry jaw. But his eyes—piercing silver-gold—burned with unmistakable Alpha power. Liam. The same commanding presence from the woods, only stronger in the daylight. He moved like the hallway belonged to him. Max and Alex dropped their heads instantly, all cockiness gone. Liam walked straight toward us. Tanya lowered her claws fast and tried a sweet smile. "Alpha Liam! I was just—" He didn't even glance at her. He brushed past Tanya like she was nothing and stopped right in front of me. The moment his silver-gold eyes met my violet-gray ones, the crushing Alpha pressure in the air disappeared. Warm heat rushed in to take its place. Liam froze. His chest rose sharply as he pulled in a deep breath, taking in my scent. A low, powerful rumble vibrated from deep in his chest—not anger, but something fierce and possessive. His wolf was reacting. I stared up at him, heart pounding so hard I thought it might break through my ribs. For one long second, he looked at me like I was the only person in the entire world. Not a liability. Not a broken wolf. Just… me. Liam slowly tore his gaze away. He turned a freezing, deadly glare on Tanya. "If I ever see your claws near her again, Tanya," his voice rolled out like thunder, sending visible ripples of power through the hallway, "I will personally exile your entire family from this pack. Do I make myself clear?" Tanya dropped to her knees, face pale. The crowd stayed frozen in stunned silence. I stood there, still catching my breath, feeling the weight of those silver-gold eyes return to me. Something had shifted in the air between us—something big, invisible, and impossible to ignore.
