Chapter 5: The False Accusations and Shattered Hopes

2138 Words
Over the next few days, the invisible wall between Liam and me began to crumble. We started getting closer—unbelievably close. We spent our mornings sitting together in the courtyard sharing pack gossip, laughed over our lunch trays on the rooftop, and even ended up side-by-side in a few of our afternoon lectures. When Liam looked at me, he didn't see a headline or a defect. He just saw Aria. He didn't seem to care about my lack of a wolf, my lack of rank, or any other thing the rest of the pack weaponized against me. Because of that, I finally found myself relaxing in his imposing presence. The intense, suffocating nervousness melted away, replaced by an easy comfort. I started joking freely with him, and as the days went on, I even grew brave enough to tease him. "So, Liam, did that mysterious lady in the woods just vanish into thin air? Or did she completely stop existing?" I asked one afternoon on the rooftop. It was break time, and the three of us were just gisting, killing time before our next grueling combat-theory class. Beside us, Tiffany stopped drawing in her sketchbook and blinked, staring at the two of us with wide, curious eyes. Over the past week, Tiffany had also been getting used to the almighty future Alpha hanging out with us. To her, Liam was like a guardian angel—the ultimate protector who hated seeing the weak oppressed, lurking around to keep the bullies at bay. I desperately wanted to believe that was his only reason, too. But deep down, in a quiet place in my heart, I knew there was more to it. I could feel a strange, electric pull whenever he was near. Liam looked up from his apple, his expression shifting into a mask of mock seriousness. "Which lady?" "The healer in the woods," I pressed, folding my arms and forging a look of deep, exaggerated disappointment. "Oh, the Seer?" Liam laughed. It was my favorite sound. Whenever he laughed, something magical happened to his eyes—the hard, lethal glint of a future ruler vanished, making him look like the boy he actually was, rather than the terrifying, all-powerful Alpha the entire territory feared. "She didn't disappear, Aria. Why on earth would you think she did?" "Well, you don't talk about her anymore," I pointed out, tossing a small pebble at his shoe. "I have only talked about her once, Aria," Liam countered, his silver-gold eyes dancing with amusement. "And if I recall correctly, I gave you very specific conditions before we could go and see her." "Wait, wait, wait," Tiffany interrupted, her copper eyes darting between us with real, frantic concern. "Which healer? Which Seer? Aria, are you okay? Are you sick?" "I'm fine, Tiff," I muttered, letting out a loud, dramatic sigh of pure frustration. Liam let out a rich, deep bark of laughter at my expression. "Relax, Aria. I promise I will take you there." "When?" I demanded, locking my eyes onto his. "Next week." The teasing smile died on my lips. The playful atmosphere suddenly felt incredibly heavy. I looked down at my hands, my chest tightening as a sudden wave of raw, unfiltered emotion slammed into me. "You don't know the kind of hope you created in me when you told me about her, Liam. You don't know how badly I want to learn why I am different. How much it hurts." My voice cracked at the end, the tears I had been suppressing for weeks suddenly stinging the backs of my eyes. "Hey..." Liam's voice softened instantly, losing every ounce of its playfulness. "Aria, look at me. I will take you there next week, I promise. No tears." I looked up at him, forcing my trembling lips to attempt a smile, but it felt hollow. How could I ever truly explain to him how agonizing it was to be different in the worst way possible? To feel like a tree planted on a bloody battlefield, receiving the harsh mark of the sword from every passing soldier. To hope, in absolute futility, that you might wake up strong one day just so you can defend the people you love. I closed my eyes tight, squeezing them shut so the hot tears wouldn't escape. But before the first drop could fall, I felt a pair of massive, warm hands wrap securely around my frame. Liam pulled me forward, tucking me tightly against his broad, muscular chest. He gently rested his chin on top of my head, one of his large palms softly patting my back in slow, rhythmic strokes, as if he were soothing a frightened child. The profound tenderness of the gesture shattered the last of my defenses. I buried my face into his shirt, inhaling his intoxicating scent of pine and rain, and let the years of built-up tears and frustration finally flow. "The Seer exists, Aria. She is entirely real," Liam whispered into my hair, his chest vibrating against my cheek. "I will take you to her next week. Come what may, we are going to get your answers." I couldn't speak. I just nodded my head, keeping my face safely buried in the safety of his chest. After a few quiet minutes, Liam gently hooked his thumb and index finger under my chin. He tilted my face upward, forcing me to look into his glowing, silver-gold eyes. He stared at my tear-stained face for a long moment. "By the Moon Goddess," Liam breathed, his face twisting into a look of mock, exaggerated awe. "Even when she is sad, she is still breathtakingly beautiful." A wet, emotional laugh escaped my lips, and I weakly swatted his shoulder. A loud, deliberate cough from behind us broke the spell. Tiffany was chuckling softly, forcing us to break our embrace. My face burned a bright, fiery crimson—I had totally, completely forgotten she was sitting right there. But the beautiful bubble we had built shattered the very next day. When I arrived at school on Wednesday, Liam wasn't there. He had texted me earlier, explaining that a pressing, high-stakes council issue required his immediate attention and he would be away for the remainder of the week. Without him, the academy transformed back into a living hell. His absence was a glaring neon sign to the rest of the school that our protector was gone. And Tanya, in her own malicious way, wasted no time letting us know she was still very much queen of the jungle. By Friday afternoon, the trap was sprung. Tiffany and I were at our lockers, packing our bags for the day, when a heavy shadow fell over us. I turned around to find Tanya, Chloe, and Megan standing there, their arms crossed and sneers firmly in place. "Step away from the locker, thief," Tanya barked, her voice drawing the immediate attention of the students lingering in the hallway. I frowned, keeping my voice calm. "What are you talking about, Tanya?" "My solid-gold, diamond-encrusted pack bracelet went missing during gym class," Tanya announced loudly, ensuring her voice carried across the corridor. "And a little bird told me they saw a wolf-less stray lingering near my bag. It's inside your locker, Aria. Open it." "I didn't take your bracelet," I said, my jaw clenching. "I haven't even been near your bag." "Then you won't mind if I take a look," Tanya insisted, her amber eyes gleaming mischievously. I had absolutely nothing to hide, and I refused to let her see me sweat. "Fine. Watch me open it." I turned around, grabbing the metal latch of my locker. But the exact moment I swung the locker door open, Tanya's heavy, combat-booted foot came down with agonizing force directly on top of my sneakers, stomping my toes into the hard tile. "Ah!" a sharp gasp of pure pain left my throat, and my knees buckled. I clutched the edge of the locker, my eyes watering from the sudden throbbing ache. I whipped my head around, glaring at Tanya for an explanation, but she just offered me a wicked, innocent smirk. I forced myself to breathe through the pain, turning back to my locker to grab my backpack and end this nightmare. But the moment my eyes landed on the top shelf, my blood ran completely cold. Staring right back at me, glittering under the harsh fluorescent lights, was a thick, diamond-encrusted gold bracelet. I stared at it in sheer horror and disbelief. My breath hitched. No. This can't be happening. "You see?! Look at that! The little human is a thief!" Tanya shrieked triumphantly, pointing a manicured finger into the locker. "I... I didn't take this," I stammered, my voice shaking as the surrounding students began to murmur, throwing disgusted looks in my direction. "I swear, I don't know how—" "Shut up!" Tanya barked directly into my face, her alpha-adjacent aura flaring just enough to make my head swim. "Caught red-handed!" "She didn't do it!" Tiffany suddenly screamed, stepping in front of me with a bravery I didn't know she possessed. "Megan sneaked over and slid it through the locker vents the exact second Tanya stomped Aria's foot! I saw her!" SMACK. A sickening slap echoed through the hallway. Megan had stepped forward, striking the back of Tiffany's head with enough force to send my best friend stumbling into the metal doors. "What did you just say, you pathetic omega?" Megan sneered. Before I could even process the anger, the three girls charged at us. It was a completely coordinated assault. They began kicking our shins, slapping at our faces, and pulling our hair, their vicious voices chanting, "Thieves! Human trash! Disgusting parasites!" Suddenly, the crowd parted, and the Head Gamma's twin sons, Max and Alex, swaggered into the fray. Instead of stopping it, they let out amused laughs, Alex deliberately sticking his foot out to trip me as I tried to pull Tiffany away from Megan's grip. The assault was humiliating, messy, and painful. And through it all, the entire student body just stood there, watching the wolf-less girl and the omega get pulverized in absolute silence. "Will you stop that absolute nonsense right this instant!" A loud, booming voice shattered the chaos. The crowd violently dispersed as Principal Vance stormed down the hallway, his face purple with rage. Tanya instantly dropped her hands, her lower lip trembling as she forced fake, glistening tears into her eyes. "Principal Vance! Thank goodness you're here. They stole my family bracelet. We just found it in Aria's locker, and when I confronted her, they attacked us!" Principal Vance looked at Tanya, then looked at the bruises already forming on Tiffany's face and my scraped arms. He knew the truth. Everyone knew the truth. But Elder Marcus was the head of the pack council, and Vance valued his job far too much to cross Tanya. "All of you. To my office. Now," the principal commanded grimly. Ten minutes later, we were standing lined up against his mahogany desk. Principal Vance didn't even bother doing an investigation. He didn't ask to check the school cameras. He just let out an exhausted, irritated sigh. "I don't want unnecessary, chaotic drama in my academy," Vance said, his eyes pointedly locking onto me and Tiffany. "If a disruption like this happens a second time, I will personally ensure the people involved are severely dealt with. Now get out of my sight!" We stumbled out of the office. The moment the heavy oak door clicked shut behind us, Tanya turned around, a massive, triumphant smile plastered across her face. She leaned in close to my ear, her breath hot against my skin. "See you next week... brainless beauty." With a wicked laugh, she, her friends, and the twins sauntered down the hallway, leaving us standing in the cold corridor. I was entirely numb. A toxic mixture of burning hurt, blind anger, and total frustration clawed at my chest. Even the principal—the one person who was supposed to maintain order—couldn't stand up, protect, or defend his students from high-ranking bullies. The entire system was rotten to the core. I walked the entire way home in dead silence, my fists clenched so tight my nails cut into my palms. The moment I burst through the front door of our cabin, the dam broke. I looked at my mother and father, who jumped up from the couch in horror at the sight of my bruised face and disheveled hair. "Aria! Sweetheart, what happened?!" my mother cried, rushing toward me. "I'm done," I choked out, the tears finally spilling over my burning cheeks as I shook my head violently. "I am entirely done. Mom, Dad... I don't ever want to step foot in that school ever again."
