CHAPTER 5:

Alex's POV “Alex— “ Just say it, Noah. Say that you didn't feel whatever it was that was between us that night." His eyes grew darker, and he took a step forward, then another. I hitched my breath, my eyes trained on him as he approached. I took a step back instinctively and hit something solid; my hands traced it. It was the desk in the meeting room My heartbeat doubled as he stopped in front of me and then placed his hands opposite me, leaning in. “So you don't hate me?” “ Should I hate you? Of course I should. You killed my parents." “I didn't kill your parents, Alex. Your brother has been lying to you." “Taylor's only protecting me”. Noah stared at me, and for once, I saw the vulnerability in his eyes, not the cold, steely Alpha. “You think?” “What happened to you and Taylor then? For ten years, I've been kept in the dark. If you didn't betray him, why did you lose your best friend?” I asked quietly, my heart racing. We were in a very compromising position. God help us, someone didn't stumble in here. Especially Taylor. “Why you…Damn, the heavens must hate me”, he said with a laugh that felt like he was struggling not to break down in tears. “Noah”. His hands went around my waist, and he pulled me close. My hands snaked up his suit and touched his face. He was dangerously close to me, his eyes resting on my lips. “Just shut up, Alexandra," he whispered as his lips brushed against the curve of my throat. “Just shut up”. I could hear our breaths and our hearts racing. This was wrong, but we were doing it anyway It was definitely strange that the man I'd hated for almost my lifetime was holding me in his arms. I'm sorry, Mom and Dad He lifted my chin, searching my eyes then he leaned in to kiss me. He stopped abruptly, leaving me waiting in anticipation and trying to catch my breath. He pulled away, and I opened my eyes. His jaw had tightened, and he looked away. “Noah… “Leave”, he said, taking several steps back away from me. I had a puzzled and hurt expression on my face, and I made to walk towards him. “I mean it”, he began in a grave tone. “Leave. NOW”. “What's this all… “If it's about the bond, Alex. I, Noah Steele, reject you. You are no longer my mate”. It was as though I fell into a soundless void as he said that. I froze, my eyes locked on the windows behind him. My heart felt like it'd shattered into a million pieces. He walked past me and out of the office. After a while of standing there, I turned and slowly made for the door. I took the elevator down and walked outside, trying so hard to blink back tears. So many emotions were swimming inside my chest. Pain, anger, fury. Taylor was in the driver's seat, his fingers on his chin and lost in his thoughts. He turned to look at me as I opened the car door and got in. “You okay?” “Drive Taylor”. ********************** I sat in Taylor's mini office, legs crossed and staring at a business plan, which I'd been staring at a particular paragraph for a couple of minutes and was still unable to understand. Each time I tried to blink back tears and I was pretty successful in doing that. My wolf had been quiet too, almost nonexistent. I knew she'd been terribly hurt. Taylor had been surprised when I had asked to look at his documents with him. I'd never been interested in the corporate world. “Hey Lexi”. I blinked and looked up to see Taylor slipping into the seat next to me. He'd taken a break to get a drink earlier. I forced a smile, “Hey”. “You seem sad. For the last couple of days, you've not been yourself. What's wrong? What did Noah tell you?” I looked at him. He had that face whenever he was near or heard about Noah Steele. It made me wonder why he agreed to a business proposal between them. What was he up to? Was the company failing? I shook my head, “This isn't about Noah. He didn't say anything”. I chose the lie already on my tongue, “I just don't know, wish Mom and Dad were still here”. “Come here, Lexi. You've got me here with you”, he said with a smile as he tugged at my cheeks. His eyes held his own sadness, too, and I wished I hadn't brought this up. Anyways, it was the better evils. “I'd do anything and everything possible to protect you, Alexis. Don't worry we'll be fine”. “Thank you”, I replied as he kissed my forehead softly. “Here's your vitamins. Take them”. He handed me a glass of orange juice I'd presumed he'd crushed them in and took a sip without whining. Do you believe everything Taylor tells you Noah would be a fool if he thought I'd believe him over my own brother. Taylor sighed in relief, and there was a knock on the door. Rowland, our Beta, poked his head in. “A word with you, my Alpha”. Taylor stood up and left the office. He closed the door gently, but my wolf senses could still pick out their words. They yapped on about business for a while, and I was beginning to get bored until I heard Rowland say something, and my ears perked up. I took another sip of my juice, my eyes narrowing at the mahogany table. “...a public engagement?” “Yes, my alpha. We hear that the Whitmores are very powerful stakeholders”. There was Taylor's cynic chuckle, “The bastard Steele is”. “It's slated for tomorrow night”. I felt the anger scratching at my brows. So this was what it was all about. He wanted to marry that blonde horse faced woman. I felt something tingle underneath my fingers as the rage and pain built up slowly and slowly And then I heard a shattering sound. Bwah!
