The First Dance

330 Words
The music swelled through the grand hall, a melody that seemed both familiar and otherworldly, curling around Eira like the softest snow. Couples twirled across the shimmering floor, their masks reflecting the glow of hovering crystal chandeliers. Every movement was precise, every glance deliberate. Eira felt herself shrink under the elegance, suddenly painfully aware of her ordinary small-town manners and simple coat. And then Caelan Thorne appeared beside her, silent and commanding, extending a gloved hand. His eyes, deep and piercing, held an intensity that made her pulse stutter. “May I?” he asked, and she nodded before hesitation could take root. His touch was warm, grounding, and instantly, Eira felt a strange, thrilling electricity. She followed his lead, their steps intertwining effortlessly, though her heart hammered in her chest. Every brush of his fingers sent tingles up her spine, and every glance he cast toward her carried a weight that she couldn’t define. “You move well,” he murmured, his voice brushing against her ear like silk, sending heat rushing through her. “I… I’ve danced before,” she stammered, feeling clumsy, aware that she was no match for the other polished dancers. “Not like this,” he replied softly, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “Not here, not now.” The words made her heartbeat accelerate. The world around them seemed to blur, the other guests fading into a haze of glittering masks and snowlit light. For a moment, it was just the two of them—two souls moving in harmony yet still cautious, hesitant, each step fraught with the unspoken promise of something dangerous and thrilling. Eira’s chest tightened as she realized how easily she had fallen under his spell. There was a magnetic pull she could not resist, and as the music carried them through the hall, she knew—without knowing why—that this night, this world, and this man would change her life forever.
