After the eventful morning, Kara and the boys headed to school. Finn couldn’t keep his eyes off of Kara on the ride home to school, making her thoughts run wild. She looks in her rear view mirror and catches his gaze. She thinks to herself, what the HELL. Is going on here. I mean it’s not that I don’t want to be with Finn but...it’s been so long since we’ve really even had a real conversation. Can we really just jump back in to how we used to be?
She shakes off her thoughts and goes back to focusing on the road and ignoring Finn’s eyes. They get to school and go to split ways, but Finn stops in his tracks. “Oh crap, I left my phone in your car, Kara. Can you come unlock it for me?”
“Uhm, yeah of course.” She turns to walk back to the Jeep.
“James, I’ll catch you later, okay buddy?”
“Yeah man, see you at lunch.” James says and waved goodbye to them.
Finn and Kara walk back to the Jeep and she unlocks it, but instead of getting in, Finn pulls her against him. His face so close she can feel his breath, “Kara...I just wanted to tell you again. I want to be with you. I’ll give you as long as you need but I want you to know I’m all in.”
She stares into his crystal blue eyes and finally says, “then why not tell James?” She smirked, feeling confident.
“I did.”
“WHAT.” Her mouth drops open, “uhh what do you mean you did??”
“This morning. He was waking up when I came back in his room and before he could even ask me anything, I told him. Everything. About how we used to be together, about how I’ve felt all this time apart, and about this morning and how good it felt to reconnect with you.”
“Well...what did he say?”
“He’s cool with it. Gave me some bullshit ‘if you hurt her, I’ll kick your ass’ speech. And then said he was happy for us.”
“That...seems suspicious. But you swear he’s fine with it?” She crosses her arms.
Finn laughs and pulls her into a hug, “I swear, Kara.”
She looks into his eyes for a minute. Then suddenly she jumped into his arms and kisses him. He wraps his arms tight around her waist and kisses her back deeply, making Kara’s head spin. He laced his fingers in her hair and held her tight. She put her legs back down and then flipped him around, pushing him up against the Jeep, and rolled her body against him, making him inhale sharply. Then, she kissed him again, and quickly pulled away.
“Let me think on it.” She smirked at Finn and closed the door of the Jeep, and started walking away.
“Whoa, whoa, wait!” He ran after her and pulled her in for another kiss, then put his forehead against hers. “Okay. I told you I’d give you time so...even though that,” he paused and gestures towards the Jeep, “was AMAZING. I will wait for you.”
Kara smiled and put her hand softly against his cheek, “I promise I won’t take too long.”
Finn smiled at her, “you better not.”
He kissed her quickly one more time and then slowly let go of her hand and walked away, leaving Kara grinning. She quickly took off to try and find the girls before class, but as soon as she got to campus, the bell rung. She pulled out her phone and texted the girls.
Kara: LADIES. I have NEWS for you! Find me at lunch ASAP!
Laurie: Okay lady!
Dani: Oooohh I’m excited :))
She puts her phone away and gets through the first few classes until lunch, when she took off to meet up with the girls, who decided to eat off campus.
“Okay, so what’s this news of yours?” Dani said as soon as they hopped in the Jeep.
“I think Finn and I are getting back together.” Kara said, grinning.
“WHAT!” Dani and Laurie yelled together.
“Ohmygod what happened?!” Laurie added.
“Well last night...okay so James invited Finn over last night. Early this morning, I had another nightmare and I was cooling off in the kitchen. Then Finn came in, and he was being so sweet to me. We decided to go watch the sunrise on the roof, like we always used to,” she paused as Laurie aww’d, “and when we got up there, he told me he missed me and then we kissed!”
The girls squealed in excitement. Then Dani said, “so, what are you gonna do?”
Kara thought for a minute. Honestly she didn’t know. Of course she wanted to get back with Finn. But it was all so sudden. And what if they ended up going to colleges far away from each other. Kara honestly hadn’t thought much about college but Finn was all set up with a full-ride scholarship to play football at UNC.
“I honestly don’t know. I don’t know if I even want to go to college, and Finn...” she paused, “well, Finn is definitely going. And I don’t want to get in the way of his college experience.”
“Oh hell no, you can NOT be that girl. If he thinks you’re getting in the way of his stupid college experience, he can go f**k himself!” Dani yells.
“Well, yeah- I mean, no...” Kara stutters.
“Hun, are you sure it’s not something else?” Laurie says softly.
“Uhm. I mean...maybe?” Laurie and Dani look at Kara expectantly as she pulls up to the taco shack, “what if...what if he gets too busy to see me or like, finds someone else?”
They all hop out of the Jeep and Dani shuts her door a little too hard as she comes around to Kara and puts her arm around her, “well if that happens, I’ll kill him.” The girls all laugh.
“I know, I know.” Kara says.
“Look he’s been crazy about you for years. He finally either got the confidence or intellect to come back to you, I don’t think just going to college will change his feelings.” Laurie says smiling at Kara.
“Yeah. You’re probably right.”
They eat lunch and then head back to school. The rest of the day flies by and school ends. Kara starts leaving for work, then Finn catches up to her.
“Hey! I was hoping I could catch you.” He smiles at her and grabs her hand.
“Hi Finn. What’s up?” She looks down at her hand in his and smiles.
“I had an idea.”
“Oh? I’m intrigued!”
“Well, my car’s still at my house and my mom is working again tonight. I mean, I could always find a ride but...” he paused so dramatic effect, “maybe you could take me home?”
“Well I have to work too, actually. I’ll be working til 9.” Kara says, biting her lip.
“Well we’ve got a big game coming up, I think practice will probably go til at least 7. And your work is only a couple miles from here, I could always walk there? It’s okay, if you don’t want to.” Finn grins at her and squeezes her hand.
“Oh I want to! I just don’t want you waiting around for me.”
“Kara.” He steps closer to her, “I’m already waiting for you, right now. I don’t mind waiting to spend more time with you.”
Kara takes a deep breath and stares into his beautiful crystal blue eyes, “okay, well then of course. I’ll call you when I’m off work.”
“Yes! Okay, thanks beautiful.” He hugs her tight and kisses her cheek, “more of that later, if you want.” He pulls away and winks at her, then runs onto the football field.
Kara smiles and touches her fingertips softly to her cheek. As she turns to walk away she notices Shay- the head cheerleader and top b***h of the school- glaring daggers at her. Kara rolls her eyes and turns to leave. Shay and Kara were really close friends in elementary and middle school, but she started to gain popularity in 7th grade and by freshman year, she was absolutely intolerable. Kara happened to know, being a former friend and confidant, that Shay was really into Finn. She never pursued it because she was friends with Kara but the last couple of years it was like Shay would stop at nothing to be with Finn. She smiled softly, feeling a small victory.
Several hours later.
Kara was finishing up her shift as Finn walked in. He came over to the bar where Kara was finishing rolling silverware for the next day. “Hey you! How was work?”
“Oh it was okay, nothing new,” she said, “how was practice?”
“It was good. Coach G is really laying into us. It’s just cuz of the big game coming up but man, is he putting us through the ringer.”
“I’m sorry. I’m sure you guys will kill em on Friday!” She smiled sweetly at him as she put the tray of silverware back behind the bar.
“Probably, we’re one of the best in the state.” He said with pride.
“Well, I’m al done here. Let me go clock out and we’ll hit the road.”
“Okay cool!”
She went in the back and said goodnight to all of her coworkers, then clocked out. She came back out and joined Finn, and as they walked out to her Jeep he grabbed her hand. To her surprise, he walked her to her door and opened it for her. With a stupid grin they started the drive to his house.
The whole way they sang and talked and laughed, and when they finally pulled into his driveway he said, “hey Kara, do you wanna...maybe stay for a bit?” He looked at her and smiled. She could tell he was a bit nervous.
She smiled back at him and said, “well, I can stay for just a little bit, then I gotta go home.”
He grinned, “any time with you is good for me.”
As they got out of the Jeep, Kara called Saline to let her know she was gonna be late getting home, which Saline was okay with. Finn leaned against the kitchen counter and Kara jumped up and sat on the counter.
“So, what sounds good for dinner?” He smiled at her.
“Hmmm I don’t know,” Kara paused, “I mean, you really don’t have to feed me, I can eat when I get home.”
Finn rolled his eyes, then came over to her, pushing himself between her legs. “Kara, please. I want to be with you. I mean, we’ve been together and known each other forever. You don’t have to act like we’re strangers to this.”
Finally this gave Kara the courage to say what she’s been thinking this whole time. “Finn, we kind of are strangers to each other. Like, yes, obviously we know each other but,” she paused and swallowed hard, “we haven’t been together in years. We’ve barely spoken in years, actually. I need to get to know who you are now and you need to do the same with me. I’m not the same girl I was in freshman year.”
Finn looked at her for a minute and then smiled, “your favorite color is blue. You love dogs. You know the words to every song on your phone. You love to dance but secretly, you love choreographing dances. You love travel and taking trips.” He stopped talking but kept looking at her.
“Yes, all of that is true, Finn, but...”
“When we were little we built a treehouse by the beach. We used to call it our house. I know you still go there,” Kara’s eyes went wide and she went to speak, “I know you still go there because I do too.”
She looked at him a minute and he stayed quiet for a minute. Finally she broke the silence, “okay but I still don’t know what about you has changed.”
He laughed and shook his head, “well, Kar, I’m pretty much the same guy I’ve always been. I love cars and trucks. I love football. My favorite color is still orange. I also love traveling. I’m a terrible dancer but for the right girl, I’m willing to give it my all. I’d like to think I’m a pretty simple man, Kara, and all I know is that I wanna be with you.”
She smiled, tearing up, thinking about how much she feels for him. She wraps her legs around him and pulls him close, then she kisses him deeply. When they finally part, she looks in his eyes, “Finn. I want you too.”
His face lit up, “really?!” He pulled her in tight, picked her up and spun her around, “I’m so happy!!”
“Me too!” She giggled as he gently put her down.
After they made the decision to give it a shot, they made Mac N Cheese for dinner and watched a movie. With full bellies, snuggled up together, they fell asleep on the couch.
Kara Dream:
Kara wakes up next to Finn, and yawns lazily while he still stays passed out. She gets up and goes to make a cup of coffee. As she pours the coffee grounds in the coffee machine she stops to stare at the beautiful engagement ring on her left hand.
“Oh my god...” she says quietly.
“It’s nowhere near as beautiful as you are, baby.” Finn says walking into the kitchen.
Kara whips around and smiles at him. The sun shines in and reflects off of a crystal, casting the most beautiful light across their kitchen. Suddenly she starts hearing the most beautiful voice singing softly. She walks out of the kitchen and through the living room, out onto the deck, following the singing. Finn calls to her, “honey, where are you going?”
But Kara hardly hears him. She follows the voice around the house, and off into the forest. Suddenly it stops and she’s blasted by the brightest light. She drops to her knees and covers her eyes. Then it goes dark, like a deep blackness. As her eyesight adjusts she sees an indistinguishable blonde woman tied up to a chair, the woman tries to scream but her mouth is covered. Kara goes to run to her but someone catches her arm. In the darkness, Kara can’t tell what they look like, or who they are, but the voice is calm, soothing - despite what she says. A woman speaks and says “Kara...I’ll never let them hurt you...”
Kara tries to pull away and help the blonde woman but this dark woman’s grip is too tight, and the more Kara squirms, the harder she squeezes. Finally, Kara is able to push her away and just as she gets to the blonde she is slammed by the bright light.
Kara screams and wakes up, rolling off the couch as she does so. Finn jolts awake and jumps up. He looks down at her and gets on his knees, wrapping her up in his arms.
“Babe. I know you don’t like to talk about your dreams but, I think it’s time.” He says softly while stroking her hair.
“Yeah. I think you’re right.” She takes a deep breath and tells him about the last few dreams, ever detail. And how she always wakes up around 3:30 am, and how that scares her. He listens intently and when she finally stops talking he kisses her forehead and says softly, “I think we need to get your dreams analyzed by some kind of sleep professional or therapist.”
Kara nods softly, “I think you’re right.”
