The cabin

Intro:..... Emma's mum died 2 years back, in a car crash. And her dad disappeared just a year ago. She's now staying with her best friend Brooke, who's leaving with her single Dad.....And that's where things get messy. Let's head on to the story ........ The drive up the mountain was quiet. Brooke was in the passenger seat with her earbuds in, head against the window, asleep before we even hit the highway. Nathan drove with one hand on the wheel, the other resting on the gear shift. I sat in the back with my legs stretched out, pretending to scroll my phone, but really I was watching him in the rearview mirror. He hadn’t said much since we left the city. Just asked if I was comfortable, turned the AC down when I shivered. Same Nathan who used to pick us up from middle school dances, who made us pancakes on Sunday mornings when Brooke’s mom was working night shifts. The man who taught me how to change a tire when I was sixteen because my own dad was already long gone by then. Now I’m nineteen. And every time he glances in the mirror, I feel it low in my stomach. We pulled up to the cabin just as the sun dipped behind the pines. Same place we’ve come every summer since Brooke and I were kids -- Wood siding, big porch, lake out back. Nathan killed the engine and stretched, shirt pulling tight across his chest. I looked away fast. Brooke woke up, stretched, and immediately started unloading bags. “I call the loft bed!” she yelled, already running inside. Nathan grabbed the cooler. “Emma, you still want the guest room?” “Yeah,” I said. “Same as always.” He nodded and carried the cooler inside Dinner was burgers on the grill. Brooke talked nonstop about some guy she met at a party. Nathan listened, nodded, asked questions like a normal dad whould. I sat across from him, bare legs under the table, sundress riding up my thighs. Every time I shifted, I felt his eyes flick down for half a second before he looked away. After dinner Brooke said she was going to call her boyfriend and disappeared inside. It was just me and him now Nathan and I stayed on the deck. Fireflies started coming out. The lake was still, reflecting the last light. He leaned back in his chair, beer in hand. “You’ve been quiet all day” I shrugged. “Just tired from the drive.” He nodded slowly. “You okay? After everything with your family last year?” My chest tightened. He always knew when something was off. “I’m fine. Just… figuring things out.” He looked at me for a long moment. “You’re not fine. But you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to.” I met his eyes. “You always say that.” “Because it’s true.” We both went silent, the fireflies danced around us, and I could already feel the weight of the next two weeks press in my chest Brooke would be here, but she’d also be gone a lot. Hiking, calling friends, disappearing into town. Leaving me and Nathan alone. A lot. I stood up to go inside. “Night, Nathan.” “Night, Em.” I paused at the door, turned back. “You still call me that.” I smiled He smiled back, a small and tired smile “Always love” I went to bed with that smile stuck in my head. The cabin was quiet, Brooke was already snoring in the loft. Nathan’s room was down the hall. I lay there in the dark, sheets cool against my skin, thinking about him. I knew I shouldn't, but I did, boredom and loneliness does something to your reasoning.. The way his hands looked on the steering wheel, and the way his T-shirt clung to his back when he carried the cooler. The way he looked at me when he thought I wasn’t paying attention. I slipped my hand under the covers reluctantly, I didn't even realize it when I snuck my hand on my thigh at the thought, just below my c**t. I gasp. But didn't stop stretching my fingers upwards. I touched myself, slow, quiet., imagining it was his hand instead, his fingers, his mouth. I tried to stop and exile the thought from mind, I even found myself moving my fasters faster. I felt so guilty and it felt so wrong doing this, this's my best friend' Dad, he's knew me since I was just 9 But, It didn’t take long, I came, I bit my pillow so Brooke wouldn’t hear. And I knew this summer was going to be different. I just didn’t know how much I wanted it to be. ..... The next morning Brooke was up early, already planning hikes and boat rides. Nathan was in the kitchen making coffee. He was wearing a faded gray T-shirt and jeans, sleeves rolled up, hair still wet from the shower. When I walked in he looked up and smiled. The same easy smile he’s had since I was a kid. “Morning, Em. Coffee?” “Yeah. Thanks.” I said nervously without looking at his eyes. Because if I did I'd remember last night He poured me a mug, handed it over. Our fingers brushed slightly But he didn’t pull away fast, and neither did I. Brooke burst in, still in pajamas. “Dad! We’re going to the falls today. You coming?” Nathan shook his head. “Got some work to finish. You two go. Have fun.” Brooke pouted but didn’t push. She grabbed her bag and headed out, yelling that she’d be back before dark. The cabin suddenly felt very quiet. Nathan went to his office — a small room off the living room with a desk and blueprints everywhere. I wandered around, restless. The lake looked inviting. So I changed into a bikini and went down to the dock. I swam for a while, floating on my back, letting the water cool my skin. When I climbed out, Nathan was on the porch watching. He had a beer in his hand as usual, but he wasn’t drinking; Just watching. I walked up the path in my bikini, pool water still dripping down my body, but he didn’t look away. “You’re good at that,” he said. “Swimming.” “Practice.” He nodded. Took a sip of beer. “You’ve changed since last summer.” I stopped a few feet away. “Have I?” “Yeah. You’re… different.” I tilted my head. “Good different or bad different?” He looked at me for a long moment. “Good. Very good.” The air felt thick. I could feel my n*****s hardening under the wet bikini top. He noticed. His eyes dropped, then flicked back up. “I’m going inside,” he said, voice rough. “Got work too take care of” He turned and went in. I stood there, heart pounding, skin hot despite the cool water. And I knew exactly what I wanted for the rest of the summer. I wanted him to stop pretending he didn’t want it too.
