The Woman Beside Him

1208 Words
The laughter on the other end of the call lingered long after the woman's voice faded into silence. It was neither loud nor inappropriate, yet it carried a familiarity that Evelyn couldn't ignore. There was an ease between Ryan and the woman speaking beside him, the kind of comfort shared by people who had spent far more time together than a boss and his secretary ever should. Evelyn stood motionless in the middle of the waiting lounge, gripping her phone so tightly that her knuckles turned white. Around her, life continued as though nothing had happened. Nurses hurried past with patient files, children laughed as they chased one another through the hallway, and expectant fathers proudly carried ultrasound photographs as though they were priceless works of art. The ordinary rhythm of the hospital remained unchanged, but for Evelyn, the world had shifted beneath her feet. She forced herself to speak calmly, unwilling to let strangers witness the turmoil rising inside her. "Ryan, you promised me. You looked me in the eyes this morning and said nothing would keep you from coming." A weary sigh escaped from the other end of the line. "Evelyn, I said I'm sorry. This meeting wasn't planned. The investors changed the schedule at the last minute, and I don't have a choice. If this partnership goes through, Kingsley Technologies will be operating on an entirely different level by next year." She closed her eyes briefly. Over the past six years, she had heard those words more times than she could count. Every missed anniversary had been for the company. Every canceled vacation had been for the company. Every lonely dinner, every forgotten promise, every night she fell asleep alone had been explained away by the same dream they had once built together. She had accepted each disappointment because she genuinely believed their sacrifices were temporary. Success, Ryan often said, required patience. But how much patience was expected of a wife before she disappeared from her own marriage? "This isn't about business," she said quietly, her voice trembling despite every effort to remain composed. "This is about us." Another silence followed. When Ryan finally spoke again, there was irritation beneath his words. "We'll talk tonight." "Tonight?" she repeated. "Do you even remember why we're here today?" "I know it's another fertility appointment." Evelyn felt the air leave her lungs. Another fertility appointment. That was what he believed. He had forgotten. He had forgotten the one day that was meant to change both their lives forever. Tears blurred her vision, but she blinked them away before they could fall. She had promised herself she would never become someone who cried to gain sympathy, especially not in public. "No," she whispered. "It's much more important than that." "What do you mean?" For a brief moment, she almost told him. She almost said the words she had rehearsed countless times. Ryan... you're going to be a father. She imagined his reaction, imagined his excitement, imagined him abandoning the meeting and rushing straight to the hospital. But before she could speak, Vanessa's voice interrupted once again. "Ryan, Mr. Harrison is already waiting for us." Ryan lowered his voice slightly. "Evelyn, I really have to go." Her heart tightened. "So that's it?" "What do you want me to do? Walk out on the biggest investor we've ever had?" "I wanted you to choose your family." The words slipped out before she could stop them. Ryan remained silent for several seconds before answering in a tone so calm that it frightened her more than anger would have. "I'm doing all of this for our family." The line went dead. Evelyn slowly lowered the phone from her ear, staring blankly at the dark screen until it reflected her own expression back at her. She hardly recognized the woman looking at her. There was exhaustion in her eyes that hadn't existed a year ago, sadness she had carefully hidden beneath patient smiles, and an emptiness that seemed to grow larger with every broken promise. "Mrs. Kingsley?" Dr. Morgan stood a few feet away, offering a gentle smile that carried years of experience. She had seen countless women walk through these halls carrying different kinds of pain, and she recognized heartbreak almost immediately. "If you're ready," the doctor said softly, "we can begin." Evelyn nodded and followed her into the consultation room. The office was bright and welcoming, decorated with pastel paintings and shelves filled with books on pregnancy and maternal care. A framed photograph of the doctor's three children rested beside her computer, reminding Evelyn once again of the future she had dreamed of. Dr. Morgan waited until Evelyn settled into the chair before opening the medical file. "I was hoping your husband would be able to join us," she admitted kindly. "This is wonderful news." "So was I." The quiet answer carried enough sadness that the doctor chose not to ask further questions. Instead, she turned the ultrasound monitor toward Evelyn. "There." The tiny flickering heartbeat appeared once again. "It may not look like much yet," Dr. Morgan said warmly, "but that's your baby. The heartbeat is strong, the measurements are excellent, and everything appears completely healthy." Evelyn couldn't hold back her tears anymore. They slipped silently down her cheeks as she stared at the tiny life on the screen. Her baby. The child she and Ryan had prayed for through six years of disappointment. The child whose existence its own father didn't even know. Dr. Morgan handed her a tissue before continuing. "These first few months are extremely important. You'll need plenty of rest, less stress, healthy meals, and regular checkups. Emotional well-being is just as important as physical health." Evelyn almost laughed at the irony. Less stress. She wasn't sure her heart even remembered what peace felt like anymore. The consultation lasted another twenty minutes. Before leaving, Dr. Morgan carefully placed several ultrasound photographs inside a white envelope along with prenatal vitamins and detailed instructions. As Evelyn stepped back into the hallway, she held the envelope against her chest as though protecting the most precious thing she owned. Outside, the rain had finally stopped. Sunlight broke through the clouds, casting golden reflections across the wet streets of Manhattan. For a brief moment, she chose hope. Perhaps tonight Ryan would come home early. Perhaps he would apologize sincerely. Perhaps she would place the ultrasound photographs in his hands and watch his face light up with happiness. Perhaps today wasn't beyond saving. With that fragile hope keeping her company, Evelyn hailed a taxi and gave the driver their home address. She never noticed the giant digital billboard towering above Times Square. It wasn't until the taxi stopped at a red light that her eyes drifted upward. The enormous screen displayed a live broadcast from the Grand Imperial Hotel, where Kingsley Technologies had just announced its newest partnership. Cameras flashed endlessly around Ryan Kingsley as reporters crowded forward with microphones. Standing beside him, dressed in an elegant white designer dress, was Vanessa Brooks. She wasn't standing behind him as a secretary. She was standing at his side. Smiling. When a reporter jokingly asked whether the beautiful woman beside him was the reason behind his recent success, Ryan didn't deny it. Instead... He smiled.
