Chapter 3

1635 Words
Mr. Thompson looked at Emily, an unreadable emotion flickering in his deep, dark eyes. Nothing could truly be hidden from the all-powerful Mr. Thompson. Emily’s anxiety didn’t escape his notice. He knew that his little girl was keeping a secret Perhaps… Ethan was the one who had put her up to it again. He didn’t know what she was planning, not yet. But he wasn’t willing to disrupt the precious tranquility and warmth that had settled between them. “Okay,” he said. He leaned down and reached out. Slipping his arm behind her knees, he gently lifted her into his arms. “I’m not bringing up old grudges.” The moment her feet left the ground, Emily instinctively wrapped her arms around Mr. Thompson’s neck. She had been lonely for so long. When she died, she had been all alone. So much so that this gentle embrace from Mr. Thompson after her rebirth nearly brought her to tears. “Mr. Thompson…” she murmured softly, burying her face in the crook of his neck. Her arms tightened around him. Mr. Thompson’s breath hitched slightly. The girl’s faint, warm breath tickled the skin of his neck, causing his muscles to tense. After a long moment, he finally spoke in a low, husky voice: “Don’t put pressure on your wrist.” Her wrist was injured. The doctor had said not to strain it. “I’m not,” Emily said, blatantly lying. She had already died once. What was she afraid of from a little pain? Even if it hurt, she had to hold him tight. In this life, she would never leave his side again. Wherever he went, she would follow. Emily had moved into the Thompson household when she was six years old. Mr. Thompson had practically watched her grow up, so he knew her stubborn streak well. He didn’t say anything more, but simply held her steady and quickly strode out of the hospital room. A short time later, the two of them were sitting in the back seat of a Rolls Royce. Mr. Thompson had initially wanted to hold her in his lap, but he suddenly thought about his body’s… urges. So, he changed his mind and placed her next to him. “Give me your hand.” He pulled down the hem of his suit jacket, covering his thighs slightly, and then reached out to Emily. Emily had been snuggled close to him the entire time. Hearing him speak, her eyes flickered, and she instantly offered him her right hand. Mr. Thompson glanced at her, seeing through her little trick. “Your left hand.” “…” Emily didn’t say anything, and even hid her left hand behind her back. It was burning with pain, and it must be bleeding again. She couldn’t let him see it. An unhappy expression instantly appeared on Mr. Thompson’s handsome face. “Give it to me,” he ordered coldly. Emily pursed her lips and simply moved to the other side of the car, pressing herself against the door. Then, she secretly peeked at her wrist herself. Okay, it was definitely bleeding. The newly bandaged white gauze was stained with blood. “It hurts! Don’t touch it!” Emily cried out the moment she saw Mr. Thompson reach for her. Mr. Thompson instantly froze. He stared at Emily for a long moment before irritably yanking at his tie and straightening up in his seat. “…” The driver in the front seat tried very hard to suppress his laughter. Mr. Thompson couldn’t bear to hit Miss Emily, nor could he bear to scold her. The moment she cried out in pain, he wouldn’t dare to touch her. Even if he could see that she was deliberately acting spoiled, Mr. Thompson couldn’t do anything about it. However… Miss Emily’s relationship with Mr. Thompson had warmed up since she had been injured this time. It was truly a blessing for all of them. “Three months’ pay docked.” Mr. Thompson said coldly, staring at Xu Li, who was trying to stifle his laughter, in the rearview mirror. Xu Li: “???” He… Emily was startled and quickly pleaded on Xu Li’s behalf: “Mr. Thompson, this has nothing to do with Xu Li.” It was because she had hugged him too tightly that the wound had reopened. It wasn’t Xu Li’s fault. “Miss Emily is wise!” Xu Li almost burst into tears. Three months’ pay… that was hundreds of thousands of dollars. He couldn’t lose it! He hadn’t laughed… he really hadn’t laughed… He swore on his future wife! Mr. Thompson pursed his lips, and the sharp look in his eyes finally softened. “Thank you, Mr. Thompson! Thank you, Miss Emily!” Xu Li said gratefully. Having followed Mr. Thompson for so long, he knew with just a glance whether it was time for war or peace. Emily paused, unable to resist looking at Mr. Thompson’s stern profile. In her past life, Mr. Thompson had indeed been very strict with her. But… as long as it wasn’t a matter of principle, he would always give in to her. Before Ethan had appeared, she and Mr. Thompson had actually had a very good relationship. Closer than actual siblings. Later… Emily gently bit her lip, her eyes flickering. She knew why she had gradually grown distant from Mr. Thompson in her past life. But she wouldn’t make that mistake again. And she would figure out exactly why Ethan hated Mr. Thompson so deeply. Emily was lost in memories of her past life, which Mr. Thompson misinterpreted in his own way. Thinking of the man occupying the girl’s thoughts at this moment, Mr. Thompson could barely restrain his fury. Emily was completely oblivious. It wasn’t until they arrived at the Thompson family mansion that Mr. Thompson slammed the car door shut. Emily shuddered and snapped back to reality. She looked up at the car window in confusion. Had Mr. Thompson… left without her? Emily bit her lip, feeling a pang of disappointment. Her act of self-harm tonight had ultimately hurt Mr. Thompson. At her wedding to Ethan in her past life, Mr. Thompson hadn’t attended, but Mr. Thompson’s good friend, Nick Ziegler, had. When she had taken Ethan’s arm to toast the guests at Nick Ziegler’s table, Nick Ziegler had blown out a plume of smoke and glanced at her white wedding dress with a sardonic smile, saying, “The little ingrate actually looks pretty good in a wedding dress.” Nick Ziegler hadn’t drunk the glass of wine she and Ethan had offered, but had gotten up and left. Leaving behind only a thin red envelope. When she had opened it, she had seen a check for $5 million. Nick Ziegler… must have given her such a generous gift out of respect for Mr. Thompson. Or perhaps, it was Mr. Thompson’s intention. “Miss Emily, please get out of the car. Mr. Thompson is waiting for you at the door,” Xu Li’s voice came from the open car door, jolting Emily back to the present. She looked up and saw Mr. Thompson’s tall figure waiting at the door of the mansion, just as Xu Li had said. Emily’s mood instantly shifted from gloomy to bright. It didn’t matter. She would work hard to repair her relationship with Mr. Thompson. “Okay,” Emily replied, getting out of the car and running towards Mr. Thompson. Mr. Thompson naturally heard the footsteps behind him and knew that she was running quickly. He turned to look at her, his eyebrows furrowed slightly. Emily saw the worry in the man’s cold eyes, an idea sparked in her mind. As she ran towards him, she deliberately tripped over her own feet, faking to fall. Seeing that she was about to fall, Mr. Thompson stepped forward and steadily caught the girl, who was tumbling towards him. The corners of Emily’s lips curled upward as she snuggled into his arms. “Thank you, Mr. Thompson.” “…” Mr. Thompson was not someone to be trifled with. His initial concern was instinctive. But after that initial instinct, he saw through her little trick. Mr. Thompson closed his eyes, trying to suppress his irritation, and swallowed the scolding that was on the tip of his tongue. She had finally been willing to come home. He couldn’t make her unhappy again. “Mr. Thompson, please don’t be angry anymore. I’ll be good from now on, okay?” Emily was still a little afraid of Mr. Thompson. Especially when Mr. Thompson’s face was dark and he didn’t say anything, his expression unreadable. It was easy to make her heart tremble. Before, she had been blinded by love and had dared to argue with the head of the family for Ethan’s sake. Now that the love-induced haze had lifted, she was afraid of the head of the family again. Mr. Thompson looked at the girl as she tilted her head to look at him, her expression showing a hint of reconciliation and flattery. His Adam’s apple bobbed involuntarily. “How good can you be?” he asked, resisting the urge to hold her even tighter, his voice cold with distrust. Emily thought for a moment. “I’ll do whatever you tell me to do, Mr. Thompson.” Mr. Thompson looked down at the girl in his arms, her delicate face lifted up to him, radiating absolute obedience and sincerity. A wave of dark sarcasm surged from the depths of his heart. Really? If he told her to marry him, would she obediently agree? He didn’t believe it. She was simply listening to Ethan and had come back to deceive him. But even so, he still craved this moment of warmth.
