The moment Mr. Thompson spoke, Emily snapped fully awake.
She realized she wasn’t dreaming, but truly and undeniably - had returned to Mr. Thompson’s side.
“Mr. Thompson, I’m so happy,” Emily said, a smile curving her lips as she gazed, unblinking, at the man who had reappeared in her life.
Mr. Thompson chuckled softly.
He was happy too.
His little girl had, for the time being, come back to him.
Though he wasn’t sure what her intentions were, he knew the little rose he had raised couldn’t possibly have malicious designs.
At most… she was trying to get some kind of benefit from him for Ethan’s sake.
“Huh? The movie’s over?” Emily sat up, looking at the large screen that had long since stopped playing, surprised.
How long had she been asleep?
She instinctively glanced at the grandfather clock in the living room and realized it was already 3:35 AM.
“Mr. Thompson, don’t you have work tomorrow?” Emily asked belatedly, finally being thoughtful.
She had been clinging to him out of anxiety, wanting him to stay by her side, but he had to work.
How could he work during the day if he didn’t sleep all night?
She remembered that he had a mild stomach ailment at this time. Nick Ziegler had even teased her, saying it was all brought on by her.
But back then, she hadn’t understood. Why would Mr. Thompson develop stomach problems just because she was dating someone?
It wasn’t until later that she learned… Ethan had approached her, pursued her, and dated her all as a means of retaliating against Mr. Thompson.
But before she could figure out what deep-seated hatred existed between Ethan and Mr. Thompson, she had been killed in a car accident.
Car accidents… they really hurt.
Remembering that bone-deep pain, Emily involuntarily flinched.
“Cold?” Mr. Thompson noticed her flinch.
“I’m okay,” Emily said, naturally unable to confess that she was remembering her death in her past life.
She didn’t dare say it. Not even to Mr. Thompson, who had raised her.
She’d probably be dismissed as crazy.
Ignoring her denial, Mr. Thompson picked up the suit jacket he had taken off earlier and draped it over Emily’s shoulders.
He gently enveloped her in the oversized suit jacket, watching the small figure she made, and a faint smile touched his lips. “If Emily is this good today, it wouldn’t matter if I took a day off tomorrow.”
This good today…
Emily felt a little guilty at those words. After all, the cut on her wrist served as a constant reminder of what a stupid thing she had done today.
And it was something she couldn’t avoid.
So, Emily hesitated, then said softly, “Mr. Thomp…”
Mr. Thompson’s gaze instantly turned cold.
“Mr. T-Thompson, Mr. Thompson!” Emily quickly corrected herself, knowing better than to call him that. He had always disliked her calling him “brother.”
But his double standards lay in the fact that - he himself would use “brother” when referring to himself, he just wouldn’t allow her to call him that.
No one would believe it if she told them.
She had once thought there was something wrong with his brain.
“Mmhmm,” Mr. Thompson’s expression softened.
Emily steadied herself and said, “Mr. Thompson, I was actually… actually very upset tonight.”
Mr. Thompson’s long fingers, which were resting on the edge of the jacket draped over her, clenched suddenly.
It was about Ethan again.
Ha.
“When Ethan… proposed to me, I was really happy,” Emily said, carefully watching the man’s cold, slightly agitated face. She swallowed and mustered the courage to continue, “But a few days ago, I accidentally learned… that him pursuing me, being nice to me, and dating me, was all because of you, Mr. Thompson…”
Mr. Thompson’s aura instantly turned violent!
He knew there was something wrong with Ethan, but he had come up empty-handed after investigating Ethan’s background.
He hadn’t expected Emily to find out before he did that Ethan was after him.
No wonder she had been so odd tonight…
Threatening him with self-harm, forcing him to agree to her marriage to Ethan, but then, after he had actually agreed, she had changed her mind and said she wouldn’t marry Ethan.
So, she had learned Ethan’s true colors.
She must have been very heartbroken.
Because her first love, which she had treated so sincerely, had been a conspiracy.
“Don’t cry,” Mr. Thompson said, looking at Emily’s reddened eyes, then reaching out to pull her into his arms.
As soon as Mr. Thompson spoke, Emily sobered up completely.
She realized she wasn’t dreaming, but truly and undeniably - had returned to Mr. Thompson’s side.

He couldn’t stand to see her cry for another man. He wanted to kill someone.
“Mr. Thompson…” Emily choked out, “I’m sorry. You raised me all by yourself, I should have trusted you the most… But I was blinded by a leaf, and for the sake of an outsider with ulterior motives, I argued with Mr. Thompson and hurt his feelings… I’m sorry, I’m so sorry… I know I was wrong, please don’t be angry with me, don’t abandon me…”
The apology that Emily hadn’t been able to say to Mr. Thompson in her past life, she finally voiced in this life.
Regaining her sense of security also lifted a large part of the burden of guilt.
For the first time, Mr. Thompson felt his heart ache because of Emily’s tears – a pain that felt like his heart was being twisted and shredded by a blade.
She wasn’t crying to achieve some goal.
She was truly remorseful, and terrified of being abandoned by him, afraid he would ignore her and not want her anymore.
He even had the illusion that he had truly abandoned her once, which was why she was so afraid, so heartbroken.
But he knew that was impossible.
Even tonight, when she had used self-harm as a means to force him to agree to her
