The slap was so powerful that, for a moment, I felt as if my hearing had vanished. I remained in my seat, trying to regain my composure while Monique continued to glare at me. My mates fell into silence, and I couldn't discern their reactions, but I was still waiting for my hearing to return.
"What did you do, Genevieve?" my dad's voice rose instantly, signaling his support for Monique's actions and making it clear that he had no objections to her hitting me. Although this might have been a new revelation for the others, it was a familiar pattern for me, an old practice between them.
"It's okay. I just acted out of... impulse," Monique intervened, placing her hand on my dad's shoulder to calm him down. Then, she turned to look at me, forcing an apologetic smile onto her lips.
