'You're running late,' she whispered in a hushed tone, as if worried someone might overhear us. 'Late for what? And you don't need to speak in whispers. No one can hear us,' I reassured, feeling regretful that she had to learn all this now, having missed many years of her freedom. 'Don't you want to pick flowers with Mommy?
