"Three. Two. One. Run!"
Flynn shoves me and I'm jumping up, darting out of the boot as quickly as I can,
"There!" A man's voice rages. I see the end of a barrel aiming at me.
CRACK!
Flynn shoots him with a deadly accuracy.
Two bullets left.
My feet slam onto the road and I blink up around me. Sunlight blinding my vision for a moment. My breath catches in my throat as I stare around. There's no way we're going to get out of this alive. At least twenty people surround me. Guns aiming at my head. Flynn joins me on the road and swears softly under his breath,
"These aren't my Dad's people." He mutters, "There's women and Dad never hires females."
"Hands above your head." A man shouts stepping into view. Tall, with greasy grey hair, a gun aiming at me.
We have two bullets and twenty or so enemies,
"You need to run in a second, Little One." Flynn mutters,
"But..." He looks at me,
"It'll be ok."
"I said hands above your heads!" I do as the greasy man commands, my hands trembling in fear. You'd think I'd be used to this by now. Flynn bends down slowly as if he's about to tie his shoe lace,
"What's he doing!? Grab him!"
"Oh, I wouldn't do that!" Flynn chuckles pulling out a round green ball from his sock. The gang jumps back in fear. Fear of a green ball?
"He's got a grenade!" Someone cries. Oh. I knew that. Where the hell did he get a grenade from?
"Come any closer and I'll throw it." He shouts,
"You've used this little trick before Flynn." Greasy hair chuckles, "It's fake! Grab them!"
"Yeah but this time it isn't a fake Gregory." Flynn flashes a wide grin and plinks a pin on the grenade, "Ok, now we run." He launches the ball with expert aim into the group of people. I watch open mouthed in surprise as they scramble away, "Scarlett! Run!" He grabs my arm and pulls me away,
"It's a dud! Run after them!" Gregory screeches behind us. Flynn twists around and fires his gun.
One bullet left.
"Why are they after us?" I huff as we tear down the pavements of the deserted streets,
"Probably something to do with that Briefcase." He grunts and skids around a corner. I almost trip as he pushes us into a dark doorway, pressing himself up close to me so we're hidden in the shadows of the alleyway,
"How did they find us though?" I whisper against his shoulder, ignoring the way his strong body curls over mine. Ignoring the way my gut clenches with the heat, and his heart beat that thunders against mine,
"Shh, Little One." He presses a gentle finger on my lips and I catch his blue eyes looking at mine in wonder.
He's the wrong brother Scarlett.
I blink away and ignore the way my body reacts to his. The way my heart has sped up and my palms feel itchy,
"God damn it guys! He's going to kill us if we don't find them soon!" A Gorilla man swears close to our hiding spot,
"Shut up, they're close!" Gregory's voice hisses, "The tracker says they're down this street."
Tracker? What tracker?
Flynn shuffles forwards, pushing me closer to the wall, resting a soft grip on my hip,
"They're going to find us. I'll distract them and you run." He breathes into my ear, "No, buts, no coming back for me. I won't leave you Scarlett, I'll come back."
"Flynn please don't..."
"Shh." He says once more, "Now run Little One." He steps from the gap and turns back to wink at me, "Hey Greg! I heard you're after a Briefcase!" I use the opportunity to dart from the hiding space and dash down the alleyway. Bins litter either side and instead of behaving myself and carrying on running, I fling myself behind one to peer from behind it. Flynn stands with his gun in his hand, facing five strong looking men. Gregory standing in front of them, a scowl on his face,
"This isn't about that cursed Briefcase."
"Then what's it..."
"Your Dad took something of mine, something that I want back." He snaps. Flynn shakes his head and chuckles,
"Then you're an i***t Greg. I want my Dad dead. My Dad wants me dead."
"Rumours on the street was you were working for him." Greg growls,
"The rumours were wrong."
"Perhaps it will send a message to your father if I killed you however." He says with a laugh,
"My dad would probably think you're trying to become his new bestie if you do."
"Guess we'll find out." Three things happen in a flash.
1. Greg lifts his gun and pulls the trigger.
2. Flynn is thrown sideways by an impossibly small figure that launches from no where, his head slamming onto the wall.
3. The ninja tackles the men that surround Flynn. Slamming each one down into the ground with an impossible strength and speed.
Superhuman strength. It's like nothing I've ever seen before. One second the men were all standing, the next they've been knocked out onto the floor. The figure clad in a black outfit and a hood that covers the face looks up and down the alleyway, eyes searching the lane,
"Scarlett?" She calls. The ninja is a women.
Close your open mouth!
It's a voice I recognize, a voice I almost forgot about. I carefully step from my hiding space and look at the ninja with raised eyebrows,
"Damn how did you..."
"Never mind that girl, come here." Trudi says quickly, she takes hurried steps and stands in front of me, grabbing my arm in gloved hands. Her green eyes narrow as she inspects my skin with a frown,
"You took them all down, in almost one hit." I say in shock. She shrugs,
"You have a tracking bean in your arm. It's how they found you. You'll want to cut it out."
"Cut it out?" I say unable to form true sentences. I'm still in shock of how quickly she moved. It wasn't human,
"Yes. We have to be quick, Flynn will wake up in a second and he can't know I'm here."
"Why?"
"It would become...messy." She pulls a bag off her back, "This is the second time I've helped you now. I expect you to help me. What's your lead on the briefcase?"
"I'm not sure. We're heading back to my house..." I start to say and she shakes her head,
"Don't bother, I've looked there. There's nothing. Think Scarlett, was there anything your dad may have mentioned before he..." She chokes on her words for a second and it surprises me that this women has any real human feelings, "I was sorry to hear about his death." She mutters surprising me again. It's the first time since he died that anyway had bothered to be sorry about it, apart from me,
"Thank you." I mutter,
"It's important we find that Case Scarlett. Your dad hide it for a reason."
"What's in it?" I say asking the one hundred dollar question,
"It's too dangerous to tell you. Think! Where could it be?"
"My dad said it's with my mum." I say softly. She shakes her head for a second,
"You don't think he means literally?!"
"I hope not." I mutter not wanting to think about digging up my own mother's grave. Trudi pulls out a small bag from her rucksack and hands me a card,
"Take this, there's enough money on it to keep you and Flynn comfortable without having to steal, and also take this." She slides a clear tube into my hand. I look at the liquid with a frown. It glows a faint blue,
"What is it?" I frown,
"It's for emergencies. Things are going to get worse before they get better. Scarlett, it's really important that you only use it if things become hopeless." Her eyes are wide and serious, "You inject it into your stomach."
"You've gave me a drug!" I say wanting to drop the vial on the floor,
"I've gave you something that's priceless. Don't waste it. In this bag is a burner phone and my phone number, when you find the Case you call me. You can't trust anyone with it Scarlett,"
"How do I know I can trust you?" I say staring at the women,
"You can't, but I've done nothing but help you so far haven't I?" And for someone reason I trust this girl, there's something calming and empowering about her. She reminds me of Clay and I've had an odd feeling since I met her back in the warehouse,
"Are you their sister?" I ask. She chuckles darkly,
"No. You mean Annie. She died years ago." Her eyes fall on Flynn with a sad look, "He won't leave you Scarlett. Flynn is an i***t sometimes but he's nothing but loyal. Look after him, and call me when you've found the Case!" She twists away quickly,
"How do you know I'll find it?!" I call after her,
"Because you're a women and we get s**t done!"
