I didn’t know what to say to him, or what to do with Jem. When I woke up this morning he was gone, the blanket tucked tightly around my body and the other one under my head as a pillow. Distantly I wondered if he was upset I let him fall asleep, or that I fell asleep as well since we were supposed to be watching the campsite for intruders. I walked down the path with the blankets folded tightly in my arms, Jem’s thin one and my thick one. I could smell his scent on it and I couldn’t help but press his thin blanket to my nose, inhaling his deep woodsy smell. He smelled like pine trees and lavender, since we all bathed with lavender-made soap. It was an intoxicating scent and when I got back to the campsite I couldn’t help but throw my thick blanket into Jem’s tent, keeping his thin one
