CHAPTER 13
For forty-five minutes, I went through the documents page by page. I forced myself to read every single line out loud, keeping my voice as flat and empty as it can be.
I pointed out the gaps in his shipping contracts, the tax holes in his real estate holdings, and the exact steps we needed to take to protect his capital.
Damien did not say a word. He just stood there, towering over my shoulder, listening to the sound of my voice. Every time I turned a page, his shadow moved across my desk.
He stayed so close that if I leaned back even an inch, my shoulder would brush his crisp vest.
The heat coming off him was intense, filling my senses until the smell of his rich leather and tobacco was the only thing I could focus on.
"That is the complete layout for the first phase," I said, finally closing the blue folder with a sharp snap. I kept my eyes fixed on the cover, my hands flat against the cardboard to hide the small shakes in my fingers.
"We can begin the filings by tomorrow morning if you sign the authorization form."
"Very thorough, Miss Thompson," Damien murmured. His rough voice was dangerously quiet.
I finally looked up, ready to give him my best cold stare, but he was already leaning down.
Before I could breathe, Damien slammed his large hands flat onto the smooth wood of my desk, pinning me into my chair without ever making contact with my skin.
His broad shoulders completely blocked out the rest of my office, trapping me in a tiny box of heat and muscle.
"But you skipped a section," he whispered, his grey-blue eyes drilling straight into mine.
My breath caught in my chest. I tried to pull back, but the hard leather of my chair held me in place.
"I did not skip anything. The files are complete."
"You skipped the part where you tell me how much you want me to rip this gray suit off your body," he rumbled.
He leaned closer, his face coming down until his lips were just a millimeter away from my ear. His hot breath sent a violent wave of electricity straight down my spine.
"You skipped the part where you admit that you spent the whole night twisting in your sheets, wishing my hands were on your thighs instead of just your mind."
"Stop it," I gasped out, the words coming out small and weak.
My heart was slamming against my ribs so hard it felt painful. A heavy, melting heat rushed straight to my lower belly, throbbing with a wild hunger that was becoming impossible to fight.
"Why should I stop?" Damien whispered, his jaw brushing against the sensitive skin of my neck.
He didn't kiss me. He just hovered there, his rough skin barely scraping mine, torturing me with the absolute closeness of his mouth.
"You want me to touch you, Sammy. Your skin is flushed. Your breathing is shallow. You are practically begging for it already, princess."
"I am not," I lied, my voice cracking.
My fingers tightly gripped the arms of my chair, my knuckles turning completely white.
My body was burning up from the inside out. Every single wall I had built up to protect myself was turning to absolute ash under his dark gaze.
I wanted him to break his own rule. I wanted him to stop talking and just put his heavy hands on me.
"Look at me and say it," Damien commanded softly. His voice went low and hard, dropping the cocky edge for something deep and demanding.
"Look me in the eyes and tell me you don't want my mouth on yours right now." I turned my head slowly, my eyes wide behind my glasses.
Our faces were so close our eyelashes almost touched. I looked into his dark, fierce eyes, and the lie died right in my throat. I couldn't say it.
The raw, heavy ache between my thighs was too big. The need to feel his weight pressing me down was driving me completely insane.
I let out a soft, defeated whimper, my lips parting as I stared at his mouth.
Damien saw the look. A dark, predatory flash went through his eyes, and his jaw tightened. For a single second, I thought he was going to break.
I thought his big hands were going to grab my face and crush his lips against mine.
Instead, he slowly pulled his hands off my desk and stood up straight.
The sudden loss of his heat felt like an absolute blow. I let out a sharp gasp, my chest heaving as I stared up at him, completely breathless and aching.
"Almost, Sammy," Damien said, a slow, dangerous smile returning to his lips as he fixed the cuffs of his navy jacket. He looked down at my shaking frame, his eyes full of total satisfaction. He had won today, and he knew it.
"You are right at the edge. Next time, you won't just look at me. You'll say the words."
He turned around with slow, confident steps, walked across the office, and unlocked the door. He didn't look back as he stepped out into the bright, busy hallway, leaving the door wide open behind him.
I slumped back into my chair, my hands covering my face as the sound of the typing computers outside rushed back into the room.
I was a total mess. My suit was wrinkled, my pulse racing, and my skin felt like it was on fire.
He hadn't even laid a single finger on me, but as I sat there trying to catch my breath, I knew the truth.
He owned me.
And it was only a matter of time before I went to his door and gave him exactly what he wanted.
