MY HAND WAS STILL STINGING

Chapter 5 Sammy's POV The silence in the dark courtyard was so heavy I could hear the blood rushing in my ears. My right hand was burning, throbbing from the force of the slap. I stood frozen against the stone fountain, my breath trapped in my throat. Damien’s head was still turned to the side. He didn't move. He didn't yell. He just stood there in the shadows, his massive shoulders tense. Slowly, he turned his face back to look at me. He ran his tongue over the inside of his cheek, tasting the blow. His eyes were completely black, stripped of all the playful amusement from before. There was a raw, dangerous anger in his face that made my knees want to buckle. I was terrified. Every single instinct in my body was screaming at me to look down, to beg for forgiveness, to run away. But I couldn't let him see that. I would rather die than let an arrogant man like him know he had scared me. I had to use the only weapon I had left. My mouth. "Don't you ever touch me again," I said, forcing my voice to sound as sharp and icy as possible, even though my heart was hammering a million miles an hour. "I told you what you are. A bully. You think you can use your size to scare women into doing what you want, but you don't scare me, Mr. Kane. You are nothing but a common criminal, and if you don't step back right now, I will make sure the whole world knows it." Damien didn't step back. Instead, a slow, dark look came over his face. He leaned down even closer, his shadow completely swallowing me up against the stone fountain. "You really have a sharp mouth, don't you, Sammy?" he whispered, his rough voice sending a cold shiver straight down my back. He raised his tatted hand, placing his palm flat against the stone right next to my head, leaning his weight into it. "You're shaking like a leaf, princess, but you still keep talking. You use all these big, angry words to hide behind." He moved his face until his lips were almost touching my ear, his warm breath heating up my cold skin. "You have such a beautiful, sharp mouth," he murmured, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly crawl. "And I would really love to see what else that mouth can do apart from talk." The second the words left his lips, my mind completely betrayed me. Before I could stop it, a dark, vivid image flashed behind my eyes. I saw myself pinned flat against a bed under his massive body, his rough, tatted hands gripping my hips while that same mouth pressed hard against mine. The image was so loud, so hot, and so dirty that a sudden gasp escaped my throat, and a wave of pure heat rushed straight between my thighs. What is wrong with you?! I screamed at myself, my face burning with deep shame. He is a monster! He is Ezra's father! Stop it! I scolded myself instantly, trying to push the shameful thoughts out of my head, but the damage was done. My body was reacting to him in a way I couldn't control, and I hated myself for it. Before Damien could say anything else, a bright beam of light cut through the dark green vines of the courtyard. "Sammy? Are you out here?" It was Mimi’s voice, followed by the sound of her and Ezra laughing down the stone path. The spell broke instantly. Damien smoothly stepped back into the shadows, his face turning completely calm and blank in a split second. The sudden space made me gasp for air, my chest heaving as the cool night wind hit my sweaty skin. I didn't wait for my sister to find us like this. The moment I was free, my human instinct took over. I didn't care about looking tough anymore. I just needed to run. I pushed past Damien, picked up the skirt of my dress, and ran down the side path before Mimi and Ezra could even reach the courtyard. I ran past the lights, past the loud rock music, and straight through the glass doors of the house. I flew up the stairs, my heels clicking loudly against the floor, until I reached my guest bedroom. I slammed the wood shut, locked it with a loud click, and leaned my back against the door, sliding down until I was sitting on the floor in the dark. My hand was still stinging, my heart was trying to burst out of my chest, and as I buried my face in my hands, I realized I was in serious, serious trouble.
