By eight o'clock that morning, the executive floor of Vale Group looked like it had barely survived a storm. Coffee cups occupied almost every available surface. Jackets were draped over chairs. Several employees walked around with the sluggish movements of people who had slept far less than they should have. After the Ashcroft meeting had been moved forward, the entire company had practically gone into emergency mode. Yesterday had been chaos. Today was judgment day.
